Lexington Medical Center is located in West Columbia, South Carolina. It is in the heart of the midlands here and is the hospital that everyone knows and loves. They have a 414 bed medical complex along with 60 medical practices, 6 community medical and urgent care centers, an occupational health center, Alzheimer’s care center and the largest extended care facility in the Carolinas. The usual things like televisions and movie channels and books and magazines are offered, but they also offer that personal friendly touch by staffing only the best hospital staff. Everyone is trained to ask any visitor they see in the hospital hallways if they need any help finding where they are going, and they personally take them there. They are encouraged to be a shoulder to lean on and go out of their way to provide patients and families with every resource to see them through troubling times. Everyone who visits the hospital is made to feel like they are part of the hospital family. No one is ever left unchecked or ignored, the stay is meant to be as comfortable and stress free as possible. Spiritual care is also a big deal at Lexington Medical Center. They are sure to provide everyone with access to a spiritual leader of their faith, as all faiths and beliefs are respected and honored. There is a prayer chapel located within the hospital and a book is provided to patients and families to write prayer requests in. Membership Services (MSD) at Kaiser Permanente used to be a modest department of sixty staff. However, over the past few years the department has doubled in size, creating minor departmental reorganization. In addition the increase of departmental staffing, several challenges became apparent. The changes included primary job function, as well as the introduction of new network system software which slowed down the processes of other departments. These departments included Claims (who pay the bills for service providers outside of the Kaiser Permanente network), and Patient Business Services (who send invoices to members for services received within Kaiser Permanente). Due to the unforeseen challenges created by the system upgrade, it was decided that MSD would process the calls for both of the affected departments. Unfortunately, this created a catastrophic event of MSD receiving numerous phone calls from upset members—who had received bills a year after the service had been provided. The average Monday call volume had risen from 1,800 to 2,600 calls per day. The average handling time for each phone call had risen as well—from an acceptable standard of 5.6 minutes to an unfavorable 7.2 minutes. The department continued to be kept inundated with these types of calls for the two years that these changes have been effect.

Approximately ten months ago All Pine Medical Center switched from paper medical record to an electronic health record (EHR) system. Dr. Robert Palmer, the medical director for Palmer Cardiology Associates, is having complications with the new EHR system. Dr. Palmer and his associates feel as though it takes up too much of their and their patient’s time to get through the system just to look up a patient’s medical records. Dr. Palmer believes if certain security features, such as having to log in into the All Pine Medical Center main systems with a username provided by the hospital IT department and password of their choosing, than having to log into the electronic health record using the main username but with a different password from before. Along with an access code which is also provided by the hospital IT department. After going through all the login requirements, you will finally be able to obtain the patient’s medical records. Our hospital has recently changed over to Epic after using MEDITECH for their EMR charting system. EPIC has become one of the most use electronic health record (EHR) system in the U.S. that support the secure flow of patient data between Epic and other software systems, hardware systems, and peripheral devices (HealthIT, n.d). Since our hospital was using MEDITECH before, our computers system are from Dell product. Epic software can be use with any PC software such as HP, Dell, IBM, ect. However, for the best technologies support, HP products are more compatible Epic. From servers’ support system to storage support, and virtual desktop (VDI) infrastructure, HP products can provides the requirement for Epic system (OST, n.d). To get the best solution for Epic, Intel Xeon and the Linux operating system can provide that. “Linux running on the latest generation of Intel Xeon processor-based servers offers a solution, providing mission-critical capablitites” (Intel, n.d). Based on Epic software, it provides a scalable and highly resilient EMR solution running on affordable Intel Xeon processor-based servers and the Linux system (Intel, n.d). The Open Systems Technologies (OST) did a 3 months test at a 120-bed hospital in Cooperstown, New York with the Epic software.
