Personal Essay My name is Staff Sargent Carl Kortum. I have been in the military for just under 10 years and have completed 59 college credit hours. I am currently working toward a degree in Information Technology to advance my career and to make myself more marketable when I retire from the military. Through my experiences with the military and college I have determined that no one learning type is more important than the other, regardless of the student. Instead it is more important to use all learning types than to focus on one. According to the learning styles theory there are three main learning styles. The first is visual. This is a student who prefers to see the information through notes, pictures, or demonstration. The second is auditory. This type of learner prefers to hear the information through lecture or recordings. The third is kinesthetic. A kinesthetic learner prefers to learn information through practical exercises and physically performing the task being taught. The learning styles theory is that if you teach a student by using their preferred learning ...
There are many different types of learning styles. It is important to know your preferred learning style because it will make you more successful in life. The types of learning styles are visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. A visual learner use pictures, images and spatial understanding. An aural (auditory-musical) prefers using sound and music. A verbal (linguistic) learner prefers using words, both in speech and writing. Lastly, kinesthetic (physical) learner prefers using their body, hands and sense of touch. The following paragraphs will discuss what multimodal learning is, preferred learning styles, personal learning strategies vs. identified preferred learning strategies and how the awareness of individual learning styles, preferences
If a person was to ask the average student what their learning style was, they would likely ponder because most students would not know what their learning style is. This is the case for Jeremy, a college student who discovered that the learning styles were broken down into three categories: Auditory, Visual, and Tactile. According to Educationplannner.org (2011), an auditory learner retains knowledge more efficiently by listening, Visual is learning through reading and writing, and tactile is learning by physical touching. Through a learning styles assessment from Educatoinplanner.edu (2011), Jeremy found that he is: twenty percent tactile, thirty-five percent auditory, and forty-five percent visual. Three other learning styles assessments
When I was seventeen I nervously traveled about 350 miles from my sleepy little home town of Freedom, Wyoming to the relatively enormous city of Boise, Idaho to go to the Military Entrance Processing Station. This wasn 't the first time I had been this far from home by myself, but it was the first time I was making adult decisions without my parents involvement. When it came time for me to choose my job in the army the counselors presented me with a long list that I qualified for. I got tired of scrolling and reading so I chose the first job that I actually understood. I returned home and excitedly told my parents that I would be an infantry soldier. My dad 's response to this might be considered a little less than heart warming “You dumb ass. Why didn 't you choose
“A learning style is a way of learning and refers to the way that you learn new information” (2). Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.
Selby Markham, 2004) learning styles are innate preferences of individual as to how they prefer to go about the process of learning. According to this statement my favorite method to learn are visual and auditory over other methods. It helps me to understand better and quicker. It makes my learning process easier in the beginning of the task.
A learning style is something that everyone in the world processes in a different way. Each person has their very own specialized learning style that is indigenous to them. Basically, there are three main learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Each learning style has common characteristics that describe what each learning style is and does. The visual learning style uses visual objects such as charts, pictures, graphs, and just overall seeing information. When your learning style is visual, you learn by watching other people and reading their body language; which means you also have a good perception of aesthetics. People who are visual learners are able to memorize and recall different types of information any time that they want. Once a visual writer has written something down, it is unlikely that they will forget it! An advantage that a visual learner has, is the ability to learn more by watching when they listen to lectures. If you are a visual learner, there are a few tips that should help you learn more. When taking notes, it will be more helpful to you to turn the notes into pictures, charts, or maps that are easier for you to understand. Also, make sure to avoid distractions such as windows and doorways. You should always try to learn
The learning style I am categorized according to VARK is the Kinesthetic learning style. In this particular learning style in order to internalize information one has to use all their senses like the sense of sight, touch and feeling, taste by the taste buds, smell and hearing. The Kinesthetic learners even like to work in the laboratories doing experiments, like field trips love tours and prefer receiving examples of different kinds including principles of laws and like real –life examples. These learners believe in applications and like hands on experiences and approaches to learn new concepts and information. They also enjoy the trial and error methods to come to conclusions and also like collection of rock types, plants, shells, flowers, grasses and other interesting things in the nature. They are also interested in exhibitions of different kinds, samples of products and photographs of information to be learned. Kinesthetic learners also use recipes, find solutions to problems and like to refer to previous exam papers. They have a good memory to remember real life experiences and real things that happened. They also learn from talking about their notes with another kinesthetic person by using pictures, photographs and illustrate their ideas. They recollect experiments and field trips and the outcome of all these learning experiences enable them to perform well in tests, assignments and also in examinations.
Most of the previous studies conducted discussed on the preferred learning style itself in general and have provided different perspectives on students’ way of learning. However, in this study, the main focus is on the perceptual learning style which refers to Auditory, Visual, Tactile, Kinesthetic, Group, and Individual learners. These kinds of learners refer to those who learn a language more effectively by listening, seeing, hands-on experience, learning with others and learning alone respectively. Hence, this study will provide a specific preference of the students in regards to perceptual learning style.
There are two main points to look at when discussing learning styles. The first point is being able to assess what kind of learning style your students prefer and if that is the best style for them to retain the knowledge you are teaching. Secondly, teachers have to address how to teach students who are a certain learning style or combination of styles. There are many options out there for teachers and those in the education field to adapt their curriculum for any type of learner.
The first resource that the students should put into use is learning styles. Students have different types of learning styles that make learning comprehensible and easier. Some of the learning styles include visual learning which involves the use of pictures, aural learning which is the use of sound, verbal learning which is the use of words either in speech or writing, physical learning which involves
There are many people in the world, but only three key learning styles. Learning styles can be defined as a preferred way of acquiring knowledge and processing information. A learning style affects understanding, solving problems, participating in different activities, reacting in a group, and relating to others around us. Most individuals have a dominant learning style. There are many varieties of learning styles, but they are categorized into three main groups: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic (Lamarche-Bisson):
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
One way to support my students in the classroom is to be familiar with their learning styles. Not all students learn the same way in a classroom. By knowing and getting familiar with the students learning styles, I would know how I will deliver my lessons and lectures that will accommodate each student learning styles. In class, we discussed about the VAKT (Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic, and Tactile) Learning Modalities that filters how students learn best and how they can connect new information to old information (Greczi, 2014). By implementing different lessons that accommodate each students preferred learning styles, I bel...
In conclusion, auditory learners prefer to learn things visually; they prefer to listen to instructions. Kinesthetic learners rather touch and feel what they are doing. A teacher should evaluate her classroom to see what kind of learners she has in her classroom to be more a more effective teacher. Since in educational psychology there are many branches of psychology that are used to determine learning within the classroom.
