Juliet as a Disobedient Wretch in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The quote that Lord Capulet said to Juliet, calling her a "disobedient" wretch" in Act III Scene 5. “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name;” (Shakespeare, 536). In the book, ‘Romeo and Juliet”, by William Shakespeare there is a deeper meaning that Shakespeare is trying to portray other than parents cannot control their children’s hearts. He is trying to portray that a name is only a name and it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things and that even with a different name that person will still be the same person they have always been. Shakespeare is using the characters: Juliet, Romeo, Lord Capulet, Friar Lawrence, and the Nurse to get this message across to the reader or the viewer.
In the beginning of the play, Juliet was quick to comply to her parents orders when her mother called, she was quick to say, “What is your will”(I.iii.8) and follow her mother’s instructions. Even later, when Lady Capulet instructs Juliet to marry Paris, she states, “your consent gives strength”(I.iii.103) without challenging her mother’s statement. It is important for Juliet to be compliant towards her parents demands. By supporting her parents, Juliet is reinforcing her loyalty towards the Capulets and her family. Once Juliet meets Romeo, this ideology is quick to change. When Capulet tells Juliet that she must marry Paris or else she will be disowned after, she has met Romeo she snaps back at her family by saying he will not make her her a “joyful bride” (III.iiiii.117). Juliet’s rapid change in attitude then leads her to seek help in Friar Lawrence so she can be with Romeo. The marriage of Romeo and Juliet was not meant to be, but it was made by Friar Lawrence. The marriage led to some of the turning points in the rest of the story. The three are responsible for their death because of their marriage and the plans they made to avoid having to get remarried. The families are also responsible for the death of the two because they did not let the two be together and forced them to marry others.
Juliet refuses to marry Paris, saying, “Now, by Saint Peter's Church and Peter too, / He shall not make me there a joyful bride!” (3.5, 121-122). This quote shows that Juliet is disobedient and unreasonable, It is shown because as soon as talk of marrying Paris come up, Juliet breaks down crying and starts raising her voice. A little while after the last scene, the Nurse tries to give Juliet some advice, Juliet’s response is, “Ancient damnation! O most wicked fiend! / ... I'll to the Friar to know his remedy. / If all else fail, myself have power to die.” (3.5, 248, 254-255). This scene also shows that Juliet is disobedient and unreasonable because, Juliet blatantly goes behind her parents back to make a plan that goes against their wishes. Her actions show that Juliet changes for the worse near the end of the story.
In Shakespeare’s novel Romeo and Juliet, Juliet’s father decides that she must marry Count Paris. Even if she shows no interest and is already married to Romeo. Marriage is a big life changer for most people which is an important decision. Many cultures allowed them to choose their love, while there are still some cultures that forced arranged marriages. Arranged marriages wouldn’t be supportive and parents now shouldn’t arrange their children’s marriage, because there is a high rate of unhappiness, the children may be in love with someone else but having to marry by their parents’ choice, and there’s a higher than average divorce rate in arranged marriage.
It is expected of her to do as her father declares, as the good obedient daughter she is. In this day in age, it was unheard of for the woman to choose the man they wanted to marry. These strict gender roles inhibit Juliet from choosing her own path, and holds an influence in her rebellion against her family. Juliet understands what is unfairly expected of her as a female, but continues to fight a losing battle of breaking free from those stereotypical duties. In a conversation with her mother, she inquires what Juliet’s position is on marriage, “Lady Capulet: Tell me, daughter Juliet,/How stands your disposition to be married? Juliet: It is an honour that I dream not of” (I.iii.64-66). This is one of the first and only times where anyone considered that Juliet may have a say in signing away her future. Perhaps it is Lady Capulet who asks as she too was expected to marry at a young age, so she can best understand what Juliet is going through and the pressures put on her. Juliet realizes that an arranged marriage into a good family is an honour, but it does not seem to be something that she is looking for in life. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the views of love held by the character Romeo contrast sharply with the views of Mercutio. Romeo's character seems to suffer from a type of manic depression. He is in love with his sadness, quickly enraptured and easily crushed again on a passionate roller coaster of emotion. Mercutio, by contrast is much more practical and level headed.
