In the Middle East around the seventh century, a new religion was founded. This religion, Islam, according to Patheos.com, has since then earned a very prestigious place in the world as it accounts for over 1,500,000 followers (Islam Origins, Islam History, Islam Beliefs). It is the second largest monotheistic religion in the world, right after Christianity. The Prophet Muhammad is said to be the creator of this practice after claiming that Allah, the creator of the world, had spoken to him. Islam later fragmented into two branches called the Sunnis and the Shias. Each has their own beliefs on how Allah would want for them to carry out their lives. These branches are divided mainly by geographical factors. However, Islam has certain factors that seem harsh and rigid towards the viewpoints of the West. The whole point of this is for Muslims to get a better understanding of God. Sawm, like Zakat, is also practiced so that wealthier Muslims can endure, and therefore, comprehend what the needier endure everyday of their life. Muslims also get to perform an extra worship at night called tarawih, and they also enjoy festivities after they perform iftar and tarawih. Since children are typically needier than adults, they are rewarded with gifts once Ramadan has ended for their endurance. Also, once Ramadan has come to an end, three days
After the fall of the Roman Empire, no one imagined that the next great world power would emerge from Saudi Arabia. Islam means submission to God and this can be found in the way the greater part of Muslims lead their every day lives through acquiescence to the Qur 'an and teachings of the Prophet. The Quran is known to be the fundamental source of Islamic faith, practice, and law. Islam’s orderly politics, its vast society of members, and its rigid explanation of monotheism all melt into one religion; its members identified as Muslims, meaning one who submits to the will of Allah. All these ideas and customs originated from the mouth of Muhammad, who is Allah’s one prophet according to Muslims. Islam teaches its members to trust in Allah, as shown in its Five Pillars. Islam’s infusion into everyday society around the world was not a mistake; two main factors helped disperse Islam’s ideas and customs in under 200 years. Islam spread so quickly because of conquest and political order, the two most important aspects bringing great recognition to this widely spread religion.

In addition to the many different ways the followers of Islam spread the religion and expanded their empire, the religion itself was appealing to many people outside of Arabia. The Islamic religion contained many beliefs and practices that were extremely appealing to others. One of these beliefs was that Islam is an uncompromising monotheistic religion, meaning there is only one God. In addition, there was an extremely well and highly developed set of legal codes and a strong sense of community among the followers of Islam. The five pillars were also extremely appealing because they provided the basis for religious unity. The humbleness and prayerfulness of the Islamic people was admirable to those of other faiths.
Muslims are also expected to be even more generous during the fasting period to the poor after experiencing what it’s like to be without food and water for a period of time. Fasting also helps them to liberate their bodies from food, and feel a bit more sensitivity, as it helps an individual to learn not to let anything in that would distract them from worshipping God. Also, many individuals find that after Ramadan, that they are more patient and able to control their desires as well as negative emotions (anger and jealousy) far more easily. However, some individuals are exempted from fasting, but have to make up for it later on in the year. The Qada refers to the rules and regulations of fasting and

Furthermore, many Islamic emperors often portrayed more political and religious tolerance than there European counterparts (8).

Islam today is a prominent religion, with over 600 million followers, delcared and established by it's prophet Muhamad. It is not only a religion, but an entire way of life, which accounts all aspects. Sharia literally translates to, “the path to the water hole,” meaning that muslims have to follow this path to appease Allah and have a virtuous life. It is not prominent in all Islamic countries, but in others it dominates and rules government and society, from daily routine to weighing heavily in personal status law and in criminal law. The female population receives the harsher conditions of Sharia, versus men who utilize it for empowerment. Some elements of Sharia are similar to the common practices of other popular religions such as Christianity or Judaism, in terms of austerity, though other methods employed by fundamentalist Muslims, have cultivated bad judgement from outsiders, and apprehension towards the religion.

The Shahadah, or testimony, is the first of the five pillars of Islam. In order to officially convert to Islam, it is required to recite the Shahadah three times, “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.” This has been a practice within the Islamic faith for hundreds of years. Yet, even within the Islamic faith there are differing versions. Those who practice Shia Islam add, “and Ali is the friend of God” to the end of the Shahadah. This, among many other practices, is an example of the religious plurality that exists within the Islamic world. The Islamic world is home to a large and diversified religious community that, on the surface, seems homogenous in its religious practices. But many religious schools of jurisprudence, schools of theology, and other religious movements exist under the umbrella of Islam, these schools bring religious diversity to Islam that seek to meet the diverse needs and wants of the religious marketplace of the Islamic world. Though the United States is often used as the example to describe religious pluralism, there are many instances in the Islamic world that can even rival the plurality of the American religious market. The Muslim Brotherhood is a prime example of an Islamic organization that has become deeply entrenched in society. Through the extensive use of social services and extreme religious power, the Muslim Brotherhood has been able to enjoy a large membership base, devoted to their cause, and dedicated to its principles. Every year, many Muslims will embrace Sufi Islamic practices into their lives. The Islamic world is not an exception to the religious economies model and is, in fact, a very religiously diverse region of the world.
