Year after year the value of homework is a highly disputed topic. With more academic assignments to be completed at home, it is debated whether homework is good or bad. The National PTA (Parent Teachers Association) recommends only 10-20 minutes of homework per night in the first grade and then an extra 10 mins for every grade after that. For middle schoolers, it seems as if math homework would be the only subject a student could truly benefit from. Math homework reinforces the skill taught in class and time would be wasted in class solving similar problems just to practice what is taught. According to literacy expert, Professor Harvey Daniels, most of what homework is doing is driving kids from learning.
Through my research I have found some students feel forced or obligated to choose homework over developing talents or skills. Stanford Graduate School of Education researchers have found 56 percent of the students primary source of stress is homework. Children typically spend most of the day in school and are then given assignments be completed at home. One fact is the negative effects of homework are well know and the fact that it negatively impacts parents relationship with their children and parents worry about being criticized for not being involved enough or involved too much. When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Most teachers would think that more homework is something that students should deserve. They believe that homework will make them get better grades, and even a better life. That it will inspire and motivate them to put more effort into what their dream career. But, what if all that isn’t true? What if more homework just decreases a student’s grade, and makes them want to quit life?

Healthline.com has said that “Students in high achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society.” Being sick of school is one thing, but when school is making you sick because of the homework you have now is bad. Elementary kids having physical problems just from homework can eventually lead to other possible problems down the road. These problems include substance abuse, becoming a high school dropout, and possibly death by suicide. So why risk a student’s life for a few homework

Stress It is no question at all that homework produces a large amount of stress in a child’s life almost daily. A study conducted by Stanford University in 2014

Less than 1% of students said homework was not a stressor and 56% of students said homework was the main source of stress. As a teenager, you are already dealing with many stressful things in life, so adding homework on top of that as a main stress point causes too much stress, resulting in poorer health. Which leads me to my next point.
Thirdly, is that excessive amounts of homework can take many hours to do and make students deprived of sleep. To start off, homework does not impact students’ academic performances and instead gives stress to students and parents. If homework does not help out students then what reason is there to do it. According to the article, “homework does not benefit children’s grades and is even detrimental to their attitude about school, their grades, their self confidence, their social skills, and their quality of life.” Homework also stresses out students and parents because it takes up so much time of the day for students.
When students are given homework they shouldn’t be given too much but should be given the right amount or it can cause various types of problems such as stress and sleep deprivation. The average student can handle 2 hours of homework but passing the 3 hour mark can cause high stress levels. Less than 1% of students have said that homework is not a source of stress. Only some kids can handle a bog load of homework. Students who get good grades spend too much time on homework and this causes high stress levels. When students have a lot of homework they tend to spend a lot of time doing it and this causes them to sleep
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
In an article by Valerie Strauss, she quotes, “Is that really worth the frustration, exhaustion, family conflict, loss of time for other activities, and potential diminution of interest in learning?” This demonstrates how homework has a negative outcome and needs to be balanced in a way for students to be able to get the full effect of homework. It also goes in depth of how homework could be harming the personal life of students by them not having the time needed for family and other important aspects. Another effective article titled, ¨The Trouble With Homework¨, by Annie Murphy Paul, shows her point of view of how homework is not effective. She points out how the quantity of students’ homework is a lot less important than its quality.

Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that but according to Donyall Dickey, principle at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college. It also helps us to remember the materials that were taught in class. Another reason homework can be beneficial is the fact that it can prepare us for tests and the dreadful pop-quiz that a teacher may randomly give us. Homework offers multiple benefits for real life. One benefit of homework is that it helps the student develop essential skills. While homework may seem like a tedious task, it can help a student comprehend the material. Homework is necessary for more than just a grade; it is an assignment that teaches you valuable life skills. Students tend to portray homework as something that they have to get done without knowing the value that lies behind it.
