Year after year the value of homework is a highly disputed topic. With more academic assignments to be completed at home, it is debated whether homework is good or bad. The National PTA (Parent Teachers Association) recommends only 10-20 minutes of homework per night in the first grade and then an extra 10 mins for every grade after that. For middle schoolers, it seems as if math homework would be the only subject a student could truly benefit from. Math homework reinforces the skill taught in class and time would be wasted in class solving similar problems just to practice what is taught. According to literacy expert, Professor Harvey Daniels, most of what homework is doing is driving kids from learning.
Through my research I have found some students feel forced or obligated to choose homework over developing talents or skills. Stanford Graduate School of Education researchers have found 56 percent of the students primary source of stress is homework. Children typically spend most of the day in school and are then given assignments be completed at home. According to an article written by Alfie Kohn, there are three facts that few people stop to think about. One fact is the negative effects of homework are well know and the fact that it negatively impacts parents relationship with their children and parents worry about being criticized for not being involved enough or involved too much. (Kohn, 2007)The second fact is the positive effects of homework are mythical. Assigning homework in elementary or middle school has no evidence of any academic benefit. On top of that, nothing has ever been substantiated that homework build character or teaches children good study habits.
