Irony is a form of literary device, thought, or paradox that we experience in day to day life. Irony is experienced all the time and more than we can notice it. There is irony in almost everything a human does. Irony can be humorous, suspenseful, sad, and even relieving. Irony can make us feel in many different ways. Many movies, shows, books, and other entertainment use the 3 forms of irony, dramatic, situational, and verbal.
Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows something the character doesn’t. One example of this is in the story, “the cask of Amontillado”, when we know Montrosor is going to kill Fortunado, but he doesn’t. We know that Montrosor is going to try and take revenge on Fortunado but he doesn’t, Montrosor lays out his plan in front of the readers, but Fortunado doesn’t know this, and is lead straight into a trap. In the movie Bourne Legacy, The “family”, who are really spies, are shown throughout the movie showing that they aren’t actually a normal family, and are making a car bomb, Jason eventually figures this out and must defuse a bomb. This is Dramatic Irony because we know that they are spies, but Jason doesn’t, and finds this out.

In The Necklace Mathildes’ husband spend all this time working of enough money to pay for a replacement, and when Mathilde tells her friend later she says the necklace was fake. When someone involved in a sport makes all of their attempts accept the winning point. This example is ironic because they made all or most of all of their other shots and when they need to make it the most, when you expect them too, they miss. In the example from The Necklace, that example is ironic because, they, and you, probably expected the necklace to not be fake. There is another type of irony, this irony is called verbal
What is irony? Irony is a figure of speech in which the intended meaning is actually the opposite of what is expressed by the words the author used. This technique is used to ridicule or mock a particular subject by expressing laudatory remarks, but implying contempt and denigration. There are several examples of irony in the novel _All_Quiet_on_the_Western_Front_ by Erich Maria Remarque, a realistic, yet fabricated account of a soldier's experience in an international war. The lighthearted irony quickly transitions into dark satire with the use of dramatic irony, the setting, and situational irony to mock the glorification of war and introduce reality.

A media that utilizes irony is “The Hunger Games when Prim Rose got picked to participate in the game even though Katniss' name was in the draw more. Irony is not only shown in movies bit, in Television shows and stories as well. “The Possibility of Evil,” “The Skating Party” and “The Lottery” are three short-stories that show irony. “The Possibility of Evil” is about a 71-year-old woman, living in a small town, growing beautiful roses and she spends her days trying to the town of evil. “The Skating Party” is about someone's first love and how they lost them. ”The Lottery” is about a tradition in a small village that everyone, but one person wants to give up. Symbolism is something that represents more than what it really is. It is often by authors in their writing to give it more emphasis. For example:" In life there will always be peaks and valleys" meaning in life there will be ups and downs but we should enjoy the peaks and fight through the valleys. Objects can also be a form of symbolism such as The Bible, it represents more than just a book. It represents Life, Church, Religion, and the life of Jesus Christ and what he stood for. Irony is like a twist or words or the opposite of what is intended. For example: Laughing at someone that just slipped and fell, then later you find yourself slipping and falling is a form of irony. Irony is found in real life situations as well as writings. Symbolism is a technique that gives authors a better story and shows objects as more than what they are. They use techniques like this to catch the reader’s attention.
The Cask of Amontillado is a short tale of revenge, written by Edgar Allan Poe. The two main characters in the story are Montresor, who is the murderer, and Fortunato who plays a wine connoisseur and the victim. In this dark story, we can see a lot of irony, hate and revenge coming from the main character who has been planning this all along. “The Cask of The Amontillado” is not the short story you want to read to your child at bedtime. It is a creepy tale of a man who plots revenge on an acquaintance who has supposedly wronged him, a plot similar to other Edgar Allan Poe stories. This story is full of interesting characteristics such as hidden meanings, cunning dialogue between characters, and strange ironies, all assembled in a dark gothic setting. These details create an intriguing read, which is why this story needs to be analyzed to discover deeper meanings created in the mind of Poe and revealed in the lines of the story.
The illustration of irony is first shown in the father and mother relationship. The reader would expect a divorced couple to stay away from each other. However this is not the case. “And even though my mother didn’t want to be married to him anymore and his wreck didn’t change her mind about that, she still came to see him every day” (Alexie 9). Dramatic Irony is when the irony that is in speeches or text is expressed through a workable structure. The audience knows what’s happening, but the character themselves do not know what’s happening or what’s going to happen. The character is unaware that this is happening, but the readers know how this story will lay out. In the story “The Bicycle” by Jillian Horton, Hannah is a young girl who loves to play piano. Hannah’s aunt, Tante Rose knows how to play so she says that she will teach Hannah how to play but she must obey her aunts rules. One of her aunts rules is that Hannah cannot ride a bike. Hannah has never ridden a bike and all of her friends have, and Hannah wants to ride a bike. The author uses dramatic irony because the readers know that Hannah will ride a bike at some point in her life. The author makes the dramatic irony important because if the author didn’t tell us that Hannah has never ridden a bike, we wouldn’t know why she would want to ride one so badly. This is dramatic irony instead or irony because irony is when the readers expect something to happen and it turns out the opposite way. In this story the reader knows that Hannah will ride the bike and Hannah ends up riding the bike at the end of the story. An example of this is when Susie talks about how simple it was to sync the watch to a person’s iPhone. This is ironic because Susie mentions the setup process which involved multiple steps, in order to sync the watch to the phone. This use of irony satirizes Apple’s design to the consumer. It is effective in showing how Apple’s innovation is not so innovative because of how complex their products can be to the consumers. The use of verbal irony can also be seen, towards the end of the video where they talk about privacy. In this last segment of the video, Jim the “CEO” of Apple talks about how they take privacy serious. However, this statement is ironic because afterwards he mentions, “we granted a live-stream of your location to the NSA.” Matthias use of irony in this section targets Apple's issue with privacy amongst their users. One example of dramatic irony is when Oedipus is looking for the killer of the king Laius-his father. The irony here is that he is looking for himself because he is the murder of his father. Oedipus knows that he killed someone, but what he does not know is that it was Laius, the one he murder. Oedipus wants to punish the person who killed Laius, but we, the audience know that Oedipus was the one who killed Laius. Also Oedipus married Jocasta without knowing that she is his mother. We, the audience knew that he was Jocasta's son, but he was unaware of that.
Irony, which is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning, is placed throughout many stories and poems. There are many different forms of irony, dramatic irony, situational irony, and verbal irony. Although the most common and most frequent of the three is dramatic irony, all three are widely present in almost any story or drama that would be read.
Surprise can lead to happiness, or surprise can lead to depression. Situational irony is when somebody expects something to go one way, but it really happens the exact opposite way. Situational irony can also change the reader’s mind in a way they will never believe. In “The Ransom of Red Chief,” O. Henry uses situational irony to amuse the reader. In “The Necklace,” Guy de Maupassant uses a feeling of compassion for the short story. In “The Ransom of Red Chief” and in “The Necklace,” O. Henry, Guy de Maupassant, and any author can use situational irony to affect the reader's emotions.
In the stories “Story of an Hour”, “Everyday Use”, “The Necklace”, and “The Lottery” it is evident that irony was quite a large part of the short story. There is situational irony, which is when the situation turns out differently than expected. Also, dramatic irony is present, which is when you as a reader knows more than the character. The authors seem to base their whole story around irony to surprise their readers.

Situational irony is used to show the reader that what is expected to happen sometimes doesn't. Dramatic irony is used to clue the reader in on something that is happening that the characters in the story do not know about. Irony is used throughout Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through the use of situational irony and the use of dramatic irony.
In the book Hamlet by Shakespeare, irony is used numerous times in order to give the reader insight on what is going on. As stated in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, irony is an action that is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play. If this strategy were not included in this drama, it would take away the whole purpose. This play would consist of no suspense and would be extremely boring to the reader because the characters would know as much as the readers know. This allows for incite to what can happen in the future or what has happened in the past. The irony in this play ultimately revolves around Hamlet and his plan to achieve revenge with Claudius. From the play that Hamlet organizes about the death of his father to the ending where Fortinbras happened to be at the right place at the right time to take over the throne in Denmark; this paper examines the cases in where irony is used to show how Hamlet is preventing his murderer uncle from getting away with his fathers death.
