Domestic violence INTRODUCTION is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault and/or other abusive behavior perpetuated by an intimate partner against another. It occurs all over the world, cutting across all cadres of the society, age, economic status, race, religion, educational background with the central theme being women as victims. The original concept of domestic violence presented the victimization of women as the main issue. However, as women became more oppressive, it moved to the concept of violence against men and women. Recent trend has seen wife battery metamorphose into domestic violence and husband abuse. EPIDERMILOGY Domestic violence or IPV is one of the most chronically under-reported crimes worldwide. Findings, from the World Health Organization (WHO) multi-country study on women’s health and domestic violence confirm that physical and sexual partner violence against women is widespread A Canadian study showed that 7% of women and 6% of men were abused by their current of for men parties but female victims of spousal violence were more than twice as likely to be injured as male victims, three times more likely to fear for their life, twice as likely to be stalked and twice as likely to experience more than ten incidents of violence. Though widespread, the incidence of domestic violence is more common in the underdeveloped and developing world. Comparably the incidence is low in the developed world. CONCLUSION It is a standard fact that Domestic violence/intimate partner violence is a global phenomenon. While it has been criminalized in the developed world, it still has some hiding under the culture of some developing countries. It is hoped that as more efforts is put to educating the women and helping them establish their financial liberty, the incidence rate of domestic violence/intimate partner violence will decline. Also as more awareness is created and perpetrators of intimate partner violence are made to face the prescribed consequence of their actions, it is hoped that domestic violence will be a thing of the past.
