Integrating the Arts Integrating arts with other subjects is very important because using art can help students become more engaged in the subjects, embrace their learning and retain knowledge. Art allows children to learn and have fun at the same time. By having arts as a subject child can develop their physical, cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional domains. For example, in a math class, students are learning fractions by examining the composition in Warhol's Campbell's soup paintings. Children are able to enthusiastically participate in the learning process and have fun at the same time. This is further proof of how children can learn and have fun at the same time. Arts can engage children and help them to remember the concepts better.
Rhys Southan’s essay “Is Art a Waste of Time?” is about art and if it can really help people who are suffering or is it just better to hand over your money. In Yo-Yo Ma’s essay “necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” he focuses more on art being used as educational purposes to essentially create more innovative/empathetic people. Instead of focusing so much on STEM, the author states that we should incorporate art too. Although some people might say art does not play a role in making the world a better place. I believe it can by bringing awareness to different social issues. Also, if we incorporate art at a young age it can teach kids to be open minded and happier people.
In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700’s and the early 1900’s. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee-Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition.
The first painting analyzed was North Country Idyll by Arthur Bowen Davis. The focal point was the white naked woman. The white was used to bring her out and focus on the four actual colored males surrounding her. The woman appears to be blowing a kiss. There is use of stumato along with atmospheric perspective. There is excellent use of color for the setting. It is almost a life like painting. This painting has smooth brush strokes. The sailing ship is the focal point because of the bright blue with extravagant large sails. The painting is a dry textured flat paint. The painting is evenly balanced. When I look at this painting, it reminds me of settlers coming to a new world that is be founded by its beauty. It seems as if they swam from the ship.
It may seem impossible to include art in an academic setting, but it is possible, effective, and fun. According to Barry Oreck, it has been proven that students learning molecular bonding through dance have a more proficient understanding of the concept. He states, “We have found that if you learn something through a theater game, you can still answer a test question” (New Horizons Dickerson 3). This statement proves that the arts are extremely important and beneficial. With fine arts, students have a safe environment to express themselves, a motivation to stay in school, and higher test scores.
“Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as pairing or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” Throughout chapter one in Artworks for Elementary teachers it discusses art that serves multiple purposes; artists in society; tribal artists and folk artist; artists, creativity, and self-expression; artists are inspired and work in different ways; artist begin early or late in life. Throughout this chapter it discusses the knowledge about artists and how their artworks can inspire elementary students. Also, help the students have a better understanding of an idea, thought, or feeling expressed in some form.
“Art is an irreplaceable way of understanding and expressing the world” (Evans). This quote from Dana Gioia gives a brief explanation of why the arts are important to society. Arts can be classified as visual arts, theatre and drama, choir, and band or orchestra (Metla). There are a diminishing number of schools providing these classes and that is an injustice to present and future students. There is a direct link between adults who have taken classes in the arts and their success in other life skills and situations. Students learn skills from these classes that they can apply to many other parts. More schools in the United States should offer students a variety of art classes to incorporate into their schedules.
Summary/ Review: The arts provide life skills that can spark career interests, no matter what the job entails, builds teamwork and personal relationships, and also provide brain stimulation which in turn helps student benefit academically.
Kids also learn planning and problem-solving skills which will greatly benefit them in their future. Art can be used to reinforce other disciplines. Pouring glue, creating ceramics, and mixing paint can help teach scientific principles. Sorting, patterning, and categorizing can help reinforce math skills.
Art can be used to raise scores in every subject, “Students who took four years of art classes scored 91 points higher on their SAT exams than those who took half a year or less. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.
Art Education is not always valued in school settings. Although some may see it as an unnecessary use of school funding, there are many who believe it is beneficial to students in more ways than one. There are many different studies that have been conducted to test the effects that art education has on school-aged children. Some studies have proven that art education can help students to improve in other academic areas. In a journal article from Ohio State University’s “Theory in Practice,” Karen A Hamblen states, “There are linkages between art learning and learning in other subjects areas and that art study can promote creative behaviors, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement.” It has also been found that the arts can teach children better self-regulatory strategies, and even foster more confidence and self-efficacy in school which relates to confidence in academics. Overall, art education in schools has been very beneficial and has proven to ignite creativity, confidence, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement in students.
