Purpose/Audience:
I want to bring awareness and more knowledge to my colleagues about the causes and the development of ADHD. Many core features of ADHD are difficult to identify as its behavioral symptoms are frequently common in toddlers. Considering this fact and that only a few are informed of it, providing my colleagues information about the possible causes of ADHD can be advantageous and beneficial for their future.
Remote Cause:
Negative emotionality developed early in life served as the remote cause of ADHD. Successful progress of temperamental effortful control is essential for children. Effortful control or self-regulation includes an individual's ability to manage attention and control behavior needed to adjust in certain situations.
Having negative emotionality interrupts the progress of effortful control thus, can indicate or develop ADHD. Agree/Disagree: I agree with the authors' intent in examining for early life markers of ADHD. Regarding the case that ADHD's symptoms are unrecognizable and a challenge to identify, investigating for early indicators of the disorder is valuable. Early indicators can be advantageous for preventing further progress of not only ADHD but also other disorders or diseases. Conclusion: Negative emotionality, especially irritability, was identified as a possible cause of the development of ADHD. Regarding ADHD beginning early in life and its symptoms being difficult to recognize, investigation for the disorder's early life markers was necessary as it is essential for the prevention of ADHD and other disorders and diseases. With negative emotionality disrupting effortful control, which is significant for children's growth, ADHD can slowly develop and progress through time as behavioral control weakens causing a child to struggle adapting in certain conditions.
These subjects were tested on the negative affects of their children as well as the presence of any depressive or anxious symptoms and stressors. Through a two-part series of questionnaires parents were asked about their children and their observable behaviors using a five point Likert scale rating. With such an extensive audience and an emotional topic, this website needs to be current, accurate, objective, extensively covered, and use proper authority with the information given.
ADHD is an exceedingly real diagnosis for many children in the United States. Are we over diagnosing our little ones just to keep from dealing with unpleasant behavior? “ On average 1 of every 10 to 15 children in the United States has been diagnosed with the disorder, and 1 in every 20 to 25 uses a stimulant medication” (Mayes, Bagwell, & Erkulwater, 2008). Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD, is the most common psychiatric condition effecting 9.5% of school-aged children in the United States (intuniv, 2013). If the disorder goes untreated, it will cause more long-term side effects and difficulties for the individual as an adult. Adults who have this condition face several adversities in every day life, such as impulsive behavior, low self-esteem and poor work performance. People are not aware of the complications that come with ADHD in adults. Not knowing the symptoms of the disease can cause people to not be sympathetic when they are interacting with someone with disorder.
The purpose of this research was to describe and understand Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the most effective treatment options that are available today. ADHD is a mental health disorder that affects 3-9% of the population in ways that, if left untreated, can wreak havoc on the mind of the sufferer. It makes concentration difficult, large tasks seem insurmountable, and causes impulsive and hyperactive tendencies. Executive functioning is the new “hot” umbrella term used by teachers, counselors, and parents to describe a range of learning and attentional problems. Recent neuroscientific research on children and adults implicate failed executive functions, or their lack of engagement, not only in school-related performance issues, but in dysregulated emotional states experienced by those without executive function deficits. Throughout childhood and our adolescent years, we learn to control our emotions, eventually gaining an understanding of how and when it is appropriate to express or suppress those emotions. This technique is referred to as emotional regulation or effortful control and is considered a lifelong endeavor, with early childhood being a crucial time for development (Berger. 2014, p.210) According to Berger, by age 6 signs of emotional regulation are evident with most children being able to become upset or angry without emotional outburst or proud without being narcissistic (Gross,2014; Lewis,2013). Emotional control and delayed gratification are developed using motivation either intrinsic (the joy felt within after achieving something) or extrinsic (the gratification felt after receiving praise or acknowledgment from outside sources) (Berger. 2014, p.214). Unlike intrinsic motivation, because extrinsic motivation requires outside reinforcements to be achieved, once the extrinsic reward stops, so does the behavior; unless it becomes habitual due to intrinsic gratification (Berger,2014, p.214).
Emotional self-regulation refers to the strategies used to adjust emotions to a contented level so goals can be accomplished. This requires voluntary, effortless management of emotions (Berk, 2007). Promoting young children’s social-emotional development is essential for three interconnected reasons: Positive social-emotional development provides a base for life-long learning; Social skills and emotional self-regulation are integrally related to later academic success in school, and prevention of future social and behavioral difficulties is more effective than later remediation (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).
