I would like to thank my audience this afternoon for inviting me to speak about therapy dogs.
I do understand that dogs are not everyone’s best friend, but would like to show you how useful some dogs have become. Now let’s meet the Gentle Giant who is under a working class dog that gets looks wherever he goes and some even wonder if he is a miniature horse. I do apologize for those audience members that are not as fond of these creatures as most, but there may come a day that someone you know needs a service dog and you can tell them all about this gentle giant that you meet and how loyal and large he is. I know there is concern with the dog’s size, but that is what makes them so perfect along with their loyalty. The Dane’s history is what has brought them into becoming effective service dogs. The Great
Dane’s ancestor’s is what gives them their incredible size. The Great Dane breed came from breeding an English Mastiff with either an Irish Wolfhound or an Irish Greyhound (Great Dane,
2001-2017). Even in the Dane’s early years they were used for their loyalty and size. Hunters used Danes to hunt wild boar in the early 18th century (Great Dane, 2001-2017). In the same time fame those that owned Dane’s would use them to guard their estates (Great Dane, 2001-2017).
Then when the owners would take large trips in horse drawn carriages they would use Danes to guard these as well (Great Dane, 2001-2017). But, thanks to the Danes size and loyalty to their owners has turned this breed into an effective service dogs for those in need of one. I know that there are many of you thinking that the size of the dog is over bearing and would hurt someone. When you use a service dog for mobility they need to be calm, large, and sturdy and the Dane seems to fit this bill well
