Incivility in the Nursing Profession Incivility is prevalent in the healthcare setting and is a broad term used to describe any negative discourteous manner all the way up to more serious bullying and violent behaviors. If these behaviors go unregulated, then there is the likelihood that low-intensity negative attitudes can turn into aggressive behaviors (Laschinger, Wong, Cummings, & Grau, 2014, p. 6). Consequently, there are serious repercussions which affect the persons involved, directly and indirectly, the work environment within the healthcare organization, and the nursing profession. The trauma related to negative behavior can afflict the healthcare environment on many levels, from creating a hostile work environment in which job performance is affected, by increasing job turnover and causing nurses to leave the profession altogether. The Joint Commission states that in the United States 65.6 million workers have experienced or witnessed bullying, psychological harassment affects 38 percent of healthcare workers, and 44 percent of nurses are impacted by this behavior (The Joint Commission, 2016). An expert in the field, Dr. Cynthia Cark has created a comprehensive civility curriculum for new students entering the nursing field, which provides these students with core concepts including respect, professionalism, and ethical conduct (Nickitas, 2014, p. 308). Additionally, to prepare for the practice setting, they learn skills in the classroom and simulation labs on how to deal with incivility (Nickitas, 2014, p. 308). This form of education is beneficial, and healthcare organizations should continue with a similar educational program for its employees throughout their careers. Educational programs can help foster teamwork among co-workers and disciplines. Teamwork is another essential strategy towards promoting a healthy work environment. Some research shows a connection between teamwork and reduced incivility in the workplace because a good team establishes a level of trust and effective communication, therefore, allowing nurses to feel empowered and supported (Logan, 2016, p. 48). Professionalism in the workplace in many professions can be simplified into general categories such as neat appearance, interaction with clients, punctuality, general subject knowledge, and likability. In nursing, professionalism encompasses a much more broad and inclusive set of criteria than any other profession. Nurses specifically are held to a higher standard in nearly every part of their job. Nurses are not only expected to uphold what it seen as professional in the aforementioned categories, but they are also expected to promote health, wellbeing, and advocate for patients, but also continually provide the highest standard of care, demonstrate exemplary subject and procedural knowledge, and abide by the Code of ethics set forth by the American Nurses Association. This Code of Ethics includes the complex moral and ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, fidelity, honesty, and integrity.
This article describes how rudeness and incivility causes great damage to everyone in the workplace even if it was only intended at a certain person. One professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University states, “Incivility is almost like trapping people inside a fog.” (Gurchiek, 2015, para. 4) In this quote, incivility is explained as something employees are all affected from and are not able to get away from. Moreover, many surveys are presented throughout the article to show how people either lose or quit their jobs because of the rude treatment that they experience in the workplace. Because of those survey results, many experts believe that rude behaviors in the workplace will begin to worsen in the coming years. However, steps to establish an atmosphere of respect and consideration for colleagues are presented at the end of the article to assist with changing that prediction.

A nurse or healthcare provider providing patient care in this emotional state can turn their negative feelings into uncivil behavior toward the patient or miss something critical to patient care, leading to patient harm or death. For example, if a nurse is upset about being disrespected from a fellow healthcare worker the nurse might turn her emotions on the patent by not asking the right assessment questions, or writing off a critical detail the patient is reporting. Incivility can affect many different aspects of our lives. A few are causing anger problems, being in others’ way, making it difficult for somebody to concentrate, and causing workers to skip work. However, at least in the workplace, this issue can be helped (if the company is willing). Although on a small scale, incivility and rudeness may seem insignificant, they have proved to be quite problematic.
Ever seen a nurse who is afraid to return to work? What about a nurse that comes home on crutches, has bruises, or even just comes home with an emotional break down? These are all results of workplace violence in a healthcare setting. It is a very real issue that is currently on the rise. This sort of violence can result from an angry patient, visitor, or even another nurse on a variety of units. Unfortunately, because the healthcare setting can become very hostile, nurses are always going to be at risk for violence. The only way to fight violence is to attempt to prevent it by recognizing the behavioral patterns that lead to a violent outbreak, redirect the person on the verge of a violent action, and ensure each facility has a prevention program.
Thoughts such as “why did I leave my old team?” or “you know what you have. But, you never know what you will get” repeats in my mind even after a year has passed. I cannot wait to find another job because of my growing resentment. My current four-person team has a malfunction; incivility. Within my first week on this team, my team lead talked negatively about my other teammates. She constantly stated that the work was not ‘rocket science’. The most common statement that she makes is that she has so much work versus what we have to do. My drive to stay passed 4:30pm are maintaining my job and earning overtime pay. According to the Webster dictionary, incivility is a rude or discourteous act. Numerous researches and studies prove that incivility is on the rise. Incivility is not only negative to one employee. It has a negative impact on an organization because it decreases productivity and increases cost.
