Pet life Pets are an essential part of today’s world. Pets are used to help many people today for people that need a seeing eye dog or prisoners whom get lonely and can improve his or her health with the presence of an animal. Pets can benefit any age group and there are many different pets to meet ones’ needs. Having a pet can increase ones’ empathy, health, and responsibility. While a pet can increase ones’ responsibility, an animal should not be taken in unless one is ready for such responsibility. A pet needs a lot of attention and should never be neglected. Fostering a pet can be a great option for first time pet owners so he or she may find the pet that is best for one. Empathy is the sharing of feelings of another. According to Cheri Thompson, "I knew that these children would be different if someone just reached out to them," Thompson said. "If the missing link with these kids is compassion because they're not receiving it ... let's take an opportunity to act on that in a positive way. If one already has too many responsibility’s, he or she will not have enough time to take care of another life. Animals can be great to teach kids responsibilities at a young or to teach a couple before he or she decides on having a baby. With the increase of technology, people have less and less responsibilities to take on. Pets can teach one if he or she would be good at taking care of animals. Consistency is key to taking care of a pet and consistency is what responsibility is about. Consistency is important to learn so one may continue to be responsible for others. Do you know that if you buy a pet from a pet store, there will be some animals die in the shelters? Do you also know that every year there are thousands of sheltered animals are euthanized—mercy killing— because there is no space for them? Many people buy pets rather than adopt from shelters because they think they are healthy, purebred and well-behaved. But actually the sheltered animals may be healthier, happier and much cheaper. In the recent years, more and more people decide to adopt animals since there are numerous advantages such as changing a homeless animal’s whole life, reducing illegal trade and puppy farms and benefiting from long- term advice and support.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 7.6 million companion pets enter animal shelters across the United States each year, nearly evenly disrupted between dogs and cats . These animals are abandoned for reasons including families no longer being able to care for them (sickness/death of an owner), to families not wanting them (the novelty wearing of the animal wearing off), to the animals being born into puppy mills to finally animals that are loved being lost from their owners. These animals do not understand what is happening to them and rely on the kindness of humans to provide for them in shelters until their forever home can be found.
As one gets older being responsible comes in handy when applying to jobs, when attending school, and when having kids. Owing a dog teaches you to be responsible. For kids its one of their first jobs they get. They are told to pick up poop, take the dog out for walks, feed the dog and play with the dog. They are taking care of another life and if they do not do those tasks then the dog does not live a happy life. It gives kids a longtime commitment and it teaches them how to be consistent. Responsibilities for dogs come in all different forms, but these are just a couple of ways that I have to specifically take care of my dog. Dogs make great companions, can be assistance dogs and help people with disabilities, and even protect a household. Hearing dogs can be the ears for a person that is hard of hearing, seeing dogs can be the eyes for someone who is legally blind, and service dogs can be an alert system for someone with epilepsy. Although, these dogs are put through a lot of special training for a specific need. More often than not, an assistance dog is adopted but also donated to someone who is handicapped.
