Junk files are useless or unnecessary files that pile up on the computer over a period of time. They may take up valuable hard disk drive memory that can even cause the computer to slow down. These unnecessary items or files may affect the overall performance of the computer. It could be impossible to manually look for them since they can be located anywhere in the system. When the computer user performs a junk file cleanup, they may be surprised as to how much disk space these files use on the computer. Unwanted files are basically temporary records intended to back up the user’s work every time they use the computer. Also, when they are browsing the web, a lot of information about the websites that the user visited are kept in the browser. These are the cookies, caches, browsing history, and save form data. Another example is when a program is installed and uninstalled on the computer. The files of this program would leave traces on the computer and become junk files. These temporary items on the computer are not removed automatically after shutting down the system. They normally would just pile up and may lead to speed issues because they occupy hard drive space. So, it is important to clean up junks to keep the computer optimized and free up hard disk drive to store more valuable items. Junk files may create a severe problem on the computer and affect its performance. These files cannot be prevented from being generated. Normally, there are also a lot of junk files in the “My Documents” or “Documents” folder. Computer users might need the files in this folder later on so it would be advisable that before deleting them, they should make a copy of the important files on a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. To do a junk file clean up on this folder, just choose the file and delete it. The same can be done of folders such as “Music,” “Pictures,” and “Videos.” Pictures and videos actually occupy lots of space on the hard drive. 3. Programs or applications that are no longer in use can also be uninstalled. From the Control Panel, just go to Add/Remove Programs and there would be a list of programs that are on the system. From this list, uninstall the ones that are no longer needed. 4. A fast and easy way to remove junk files on the computer is to use a cleanup software. This is different from the aforementioned steps since this can be done automatically. Unlike the manual methods, this is not going to eat up a lot of time to delete the junk files.
