Effective Teaching and Learning: The quality of teaching in a classroom makes the biggest learning outcome. Effective teaching leads to the improvement in a student’s achievement. Measuring effective teaching against the progress of a student is a must. It is the belief of all schools that all students must have equalising starting points which means that no matter what background a child comes from they should have the same opportunity for learning. Many schools have different frameworks which outline what makes for effective teaching and learning in a classroom, these follow quite closely with the teacher’s standards. Marking work is naturally a slow process, if a teacher assess the pupil premium students work first then those students get the most detailed and constructive feedback from the teacher. Effective feedback has been proven to add an additional 8 months progress per school year for a student. Engaging parents and carers is a huge roll for effective teaching and learning, breaking the cycles of low aspirations for pupil premium students is key for progress, engaging the parents and carers is an important step in narrowing the gap in attainment. Creating strong relationships between teachers and pupil premium students is incredibly important in effective teaching and learning. When a student feels comfortable and safe in a classroom they are a lot more willing to learn. The students must feel secure enough to be able to come forward to a teacher and ask for help and extra learning. Throughout my observation phase many of the teachers in my placement use positive rewards as a scheme with the pupil premium students to encourage them to work to their very best. When planning school trips a lot of schools allow for pupil premium students to have the first opportunity of attending as these excursions help to culturally and socially develop a student, these students likely
The effective teacher exhibits positive expectations for all students. Having positive expectations simply means that the teacher believes in the student and that the student can learn. Students will live up to the expectations you set, and to be effective- your expectations should be positive for all students. The effective teacher establishes good classroom management techniques. Classroom Management is practices and procedures that a teacher uses to maintain an environment in which instruction and learning can occur. Effective teachers manage, ineffective teachers discipline; this book guides you in practicing procedures with your students. The effective teacher designs lessons for student mastery. Mastery simply means a student's demonstration that a concept or skill can be performed at a level of proficiency determined by the teacher. Student success in the subject matter of the class will be the result of how well the teacher designs lessons and checks for mastery. You must know how to get students to do their assignments, pass their tests, and work cooperatively. Wong states that what you do on the first few days of school can determine your success for the rest of the year.
7). In order to obtain academic achievement learning needs to be challenging, yet exciting. The teacher needs to be able to facilitate the learning process for different cultural and linguistic groups. Teachers also need to understand and teach students that learning does not occur in a box and that there is a world outside of the classroom. Effective practices such as INCLUDE, allows teachers to accommodate more diversity in their classrooms. When teachers have the mindset of accommodating their classrooms, they reduce the need for making more individualized adaptations, unless necessary for particular students. The most important aspects to maintaining an orderly and effective classroom environment are organization, grouping, instructional materials, and strategies to promote successful students.
Before the lesson is prepared, the teachers must have a clear understanding of the objectives of the lesson to be taught. By having an understanding of what they students will able to accomplish at the end of the lesson, the content remains focused and thorough. The teacher must then express these objectives to the students including the standards for performance. Students can then be held accountable for expectations that are known.

Everyone knows that when it comes to making a difference in a child’s academic and life achievements, their teachers play a large role. A teacher’s ability to relate to their students, and teach them to achieve both socially and academically contributes to how effective they are. What does it mean to be an effective teacher? Overall there seems to be an emphasis on teacher effectiveness related to how well their students are performing on standardized testing. As teachers we know there is more to being an effective teacher then just teaching our students based on tests. Defining and determining the scope and concept of teaching effectiveness is argued to be challenging for researchers (Roche & Marsh, 2000; Young & Shaw, 1999). It is not possible to limit the definition to one dimension, trait, behavior, or classroom procedure totally captures what it means to be an effective teacher. It is believed to be a multidimensional construct, including such issues as content knowledge, or pedagogical knowledge, or personality features of the teacher, and classroom dynamics (Bush, Svinicki, Kim, & Achacoso, 2006; Carnell, 2007).
In order for learning to take place in the classroom the teacher has to put in place an effective teaching and learning strategy. Being an effective teacher is not something that can be achieved instantaneously but rather something that has to be continuously developed and improved upon over time. Petty mentions how good teachers are not born but rather make themselves and that effective teaching comes from learning from your mistakes and successes. Petty, p. 516, 2009. This process involves teacher reflection and assessment of the effectiveness of different teaching strategies used in the classroom. It is only then that teachers can learn and advance themselves.
What it means to be an effective educator is that you are able to reach all of your learners and teach them in a way they can understand. This means planning for different kinds of learners for each lesson, and making time for small group instruction for those students who are not quite grasping the instructional content. It also means that the educator is patient and understanding. It is important, especially in early childhood, that the educator is patient because this is a whole new world to these kids, most of them are not used to being in school all day. So we have to take that into consideration, and make adjustments. Effective educators put their students needs first.
