Throughout high school I have dreamed of having the opportunity to attend Indiana University. I have a true passion for babies. I love to learn how babies are developed and how they become such an amazing part of the world. Therefore, I would like to apply to Indiana University and pursue a degree in Pediatric Nursing. I would love to be able to deliver babies and deliver new life into this earth. There are several opportunities available for me to get involved with new leadership opportunities. Last summer I volunteered at a local hospital for a total of 136 hours. At the end of the summer I received an honorable mention award for being a dedicated volunteer who is highly respected around the hospital. Furthermore, I've been a committed volunteer during this school year. I have also been an active member of my school's HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) chapter; this March I will be competing in a medical terminology competition against members of other HOSA chapters across the state. Additionally, I am a devoted member of my school's academic decathlon team. Finally, I have been a member of CSF (California Scholarship Federation) for the past two years.
Galileo Galilei was very meddlesome when it came to the scientific community. He is one of the world’s most renowned and possibly greatest scientist that contributed to the scientific revolution. Galileo’s thirst for knowledge was not necessarily a good thing, due to his devotion for science, he was condemn from the Catholic Church (Michael N. Marcus) and alienated for not fitting social norms; ironically becoming an outcast of the society he was trying to better. Using one of the worlds all time horror classics Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, and one of the greatest films of all time Forrest Gump, they both show us how the pursuit of what is known to the individual as the best and correct course of action could be truly dangerous. While Galileo was motivated by his commitment to the truth, both Forrest Gump and Frankenstein’s monster are driven by love and a childlike desire to explore the world around them. Ironically, acting on love, care, and innocence would have nearly accurately been portrayed by Bon Scott as a “highway to hell” (AC/DC).
A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. The fact that I’m searching for an international education is the proof of my desire to establish myself as a global citizen and my interest in the world issues.
Anatole France once stated, “To accomplish great things, you must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.” I believe that my life of nursing and will research start in Baltimore, Maryland at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. I believe a whole new world will be open to me because I decided to live the life of bettering the lives of others. Similarly, to my mentor Zwade Marshall, I want to do so much for my community by using the greatest tools, which are education and medicine. I know that a graduate degree and research is not the last step. Then again I know that the University of Maryland is the greatest place to start.
The heart of who I am, my personality, and all the things I have been involved with, I believe stems from my parents and where I am from. I grew up in the United States but was born in Kenya. My mother is Kenyan and my father is from Togo in West Africa. I have been honored to be exposed to different cultures and people. This has helped me to appreciate diversity in others. From my own group of friends, to the types of food I like to eat. I am always willing to try something new and learn something from another part of the world. I’m constantly looking up videos on YouTube about places to travel, how to develop a certain accent, whatever it may be. I’m proud of my heritage and how it has helped me become the person I am today.
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. I know of students—many friends and acquaintances of mine included—that have the most sure-fire, inspirational stories that align with their desire to become doctors, surgeons, physician assistants, etc. They always seemed to have a story that emphasized their desire to “give back” what they have received from the medical community. During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. When notified by a few peers that they had seen my name on a nomination list for the National Honor Society, I was surprised and genuinely flattered. After researching more about what it was, it was an honor to be recognized for all I do every day in order to be successful in life. Every year I make sure I take every opportunity to get the best education I can, like all honors or AP classes. My freshman year, I took AP Biology and have to admit I was initially intimidated, but I knew if I applied myself and kept on going through the course it would benefit me in the long run and I ended with a B and was ecstatic when I discovered that I passed the AP test. Passing one AP course gave me the ambition to go ahead and take more, so next year I plan on taking three AP classes; Psychology, Environmental Science and U.S. History. Along with these, I am very set on dual enrolling. I’m willing to work as hard as I can in order to ensure my success.

I want to evolve as a person, and I believe UCF’s diverse environment is what I need. I was fortunate enough to tour the theatre department in the fall, where I was given the chance to follow a stage-management BFA student for a day. Experiencing the campus atmosphere as if I were already a student brought me a calm confidence in my decisions. Theatre has been in my life for a long time because I wanted it to be, and I would love the opportunity continue my journey at UCF.
The deficiency of IgA (immunoglobin A) is known as the prominent immunodeficiency as compared to the other existing immunoglobins. It has been discovered that many of the individuals who are diagnosed with this specific type of immunodeficiency are most often unintentionally diagnosed when they are being treated for several symptoms at the same time. IgA (most plentiful isotype) is produced in two different subclasses. The functions of both are not evidently understood. IgA as secretions seems to be in relationship with the prohibition of pathogens in the body and upkeep of homeostasis in the intestines. IgA deficiency is a flaw in the maturation of B cells where B cells have a deficiency in the ability to be able to yield IgA. Mutations linked to this defect are mutations in calcium modulator, transmembrane activator, and cyclophilin ligand interactor gene. Thus, expanding the knowledge basis of the functions and production process of IgA is essential in attempting to study IgA deficiency.
I have known from an early age that I’ve wanted to become a doctor. Helping people has always been a passion of mine. When I was younger, I wanted to be a veterinarian. However, after working with young children I have found that I love working with them, and have a connection with children. Currently, I am interested in becoming either a neonatologist or a general pediatrician so I can continue to work with young children.
As a woman on active duty in the United States Coast Guard I have benefited from numerous experiences that have molded and prepared me for my academic career. As a Health Services Technician, I have had the unique opportunity to treat patients and truly help my fellow shipmates. Seven years of experience has shown me how much listening to someone’s story is treatment alone. I have selected Sociology as my major because I have learned that understanding how we operate in society is an essential tool when making an effort to really understand someone and more importantly understanding what tools are necessary to succeed in a particular environment. Sociology is a specialty that will aid in a future career in medicine because treating the person is as crucial as treating a disease. A focus in Sociology expands our imaginations, broadening our capacity to feel compassion for our fellow man.
