Hunger is a major problem in the U.S. Everyday 21,000 people die from hunger or hunger related issues. On average, someone dies every 4 seconds. The U.S. is almost in the top 100 countries in the world for death by hunger. The saddest part is, most of those are children. My group, four people from Neil Armstrong Middle School in Forest Grove, Oregon, wanted to see what we could do about this sad fact. We want to spread the word and help people, especially children, in the U.S. that live in homes where they might not get a meal every day. We are looking to improve the lives of children and teens across the U.S., by making sure they do have a meal everyday. We want to get the word out to people and let them know how big of a problem this is.
According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 15 million children. During the school year, these children rely on free or reduce breakfast and lunch. When the summer vacation months arrive, these children loose the security of these meals. Feeding America, working alongside the United States Department of Agriculture, provide free summer meals to these children. Unfortunately, not all children and families are aware that these programs are taking place; therefore missing out on a vital resource to help stretch their food dollars throughout the summer
In the article “Food has played an important role in America's social justice movements,” by Martina Guzman wrote about this protest that involved this Chef called Nezza Bendele, she is a woman that cooks for social activists because she wanted them to have food in their stomachs when they are fighting for justice. Then, Guzman goes and talks about how in the 1950’s and 60’s people were fighting for rights women were a big part because they helped other activists have food. There was also talk about how the Black Panthers were the first ones to have a breakfast program that gave food to children that went to school. Next, food and justice are connected by other ways like art and have a museum that was in Detroit. They also speak about how people
The United States is known as the wealthiest country in the world. But, there are many people that can't afford to buy food for their families, many are also homeless. “While hunger affects people of all ages, it's particularly devastating for children even short-term episodes of hunger can cause lasting damage."(“Child Nutrition Programs") Child hunger in the United States is caused by poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, and food shortage; however there are many solutions to this problem like FRAC strategies, food banks, summer feeding programs, and backpack feeding programs.
The United States Department of Agriculture defines food unsecurity as the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire such food, is limited or uncertain for a household. Food insecurity also does not always mean that the household has nothing to eat. More simply stated it is the struggle to provide nutritional food for ones family and/or self. The people that suffer from food insecurity are not all living below the poverty line. In 2012 49.0 million people were considered food insecure in the United States of those 46.5 million were in poverty (Hunger & Poverty Statistics, 2012). For some individual’s food insecurity is only a temporary situation for others it maybe for extended period. Food insecurity due temporary situation such as unemployment, divorce, major medical or illness can be become more long term. The vast majority of these are families with children.
For most Americans, the word poverty means insufficient access to to housing, clothing and nutritious food that meet their needs for a healthy life. A consequence of poverty is a low socioeconomic status that leads to being exposed to poor nutrition. Since food and dietary choices are influenced by income, poverty and nutrition go hand in hand. There are many important factors that threaten the nutritional status of poor people. The number one factor is not having enough money to buy food of good quality and quantity. Not having enough money can have a profound impact on the diets of low-income people. Limited financial resources may force low income people to make difficult decisions about what kind and how much food to buy. Limited financial resources often lead to food insecurity. According to Gundersen, Waxman, Engelhard, and Brown (2011) food insecurity is the lack of access to healthy food in quantity or quality.
American society has grown so accustomed to receiving their food right away and in large quantities. Only in the past few decades has factory farming come into existence that has made consuming food a non guilt-free action. What originally was a hamburger with slaughtered cow meat is now slaughtered cow meat that’s filled with harmful chemicals. Not only that, the corn that that cow was fed with is also filled with chemicals to make them grow at a faster rate to get that hamburger on a dinner plate as quickly as possible. Bryan Walsh, a staff writer for Time Magazine specializing in environmental issues discusses in his article “America’s Food Crisis” how our food is not only bad for us but dangerous as well. The word dangerous could apply to many different things though. Our food is dangerous to the consumer, the workers and farmers, the animals and the environment. Walsh gives examples of each of these in his article that leads back to the main point of how dangerous the food we are consuming every day really is. He goes into detail on each of them but focuses his information on the consumer.
People in America often suffer from poverty and the treatment that comes with it, throughout their everyday lives. The question raised is why are poor individuals dehumanized by high structures of power? Some people with a higher income feel like they have a choice and a real recourse to justice rather than a lower class individual. They also believe that they are entitled to the world and their opinion matters because of their financial status versus someone who doesn’t have material things. Lessin’s and Deal’s film , Natasha Trethewey’s Memoir, and Bell Hooks’ excerpts, depicts that the poor are often dehumanized and neglected by structures of power, such as the government and media, because of their lack of money and education, however some of structures of power are ignorant to how the lives of poor people really are.
In the United States, Food is one of the basic needs of life.We tend to spend tons of money every year to buy food. Consuming food reflects America’s culture in the United States. In America, Fast food is a way to enjoy delicious food made with sugar, fat and salt. It’s impossible to back away from eating good tasting food. Unfortunately, this is leading to major destruction. In the human life, food procurement, preparation, and consumption have devoted to an art form.Spite the terms of “America has a food problem,” it shows that our nation is unable to produce and supply safe, nutritious food in a way where it sustains our global population. Health Issues are a result of over consumption, which lead to portion sizes, and food production.
Hunger in america is a huge problem. 15 million children in america face some degree of food absence every day. Without nutritious food a childs future is put at risk. There are three reasons why hunger in america is a problem, one kids who do not get enough food do poor in school. Two is because hunger is connected to poverty. Three is that in genral no one wants to be hungry. My fourth reason is that it harms child development. Those are my three reasons on why we should stop hunger in america.
This year’s topic was Hunger in America. The speeches reflected the importance of taking a stand and fighting against the horror that leaves almost sixteen million children
Food and our food system is cause and consequence of some of the most pressing challenges we face today. Although some may state otherwise we must address that there is in fact enough food produced to feed our global population as it expressed through the evidence of both authors Timmerman from where am I eating along with Leppe from World Hunger. Our food system is not just a cause but is also affected by these problems. Although food production and distribution represent both economic and global value, it has been an ongoing issue that continues to be ignored. The primary root stems from power, which is concentrated throughout each stage in the food supply chain with no sight of change for the future. Why? These issues aren’t occurring primarily
Not all people eat the same food, but there are some connections between who people eat with and what types of food they eat. Throughout life, people live with different people or alone and they eat different food. Most people live with their family when they are young, then move out and live on their own, then sometimes get married and have their own family, and then live once again on their own or with their spouse.
Central Idea: The world has a huge problem with hunger and this problem could be greatly downsized if everyone would donate or volunteer to support charities working to end hunger throughout the world.
Your food pantry also needs to make sure they send out lots of letters and notifications to the local schools, so that the parents will be aware of the food pantry and know what is going on. The last thing that you can do is put flyers up in all your local stores in your community. You need to make sure that you do this so everyone will be aware of you, if they ever need some extra help. This will help all the people that may eventually need some help in their future.
