Children of all ages everywhere these days seem to only depend on the internet. The internet is an amazing creation, but people take advantage of it. Since there is internet there is access to all kinds of social media, games, and all sorts of other things. However, because of today’s society internet is one of the only things kids use and go on, whether it’s go on Facebook for hours or watch ridiculous videos on YouTube, the internet is taking a negative turn towards children, their brains, smartness, and attitude. Despite helpful or early learning programs, the internet does not make children smarter. The recent outbreak in the growth of social media, smart phones, tablets, and any other internet allowing device does in fact impact the youth school wise and at home. According to statistics CNN has gathered (Chelsea Clinton and James P. Steyer, is the internet hurting children, cnn.com) at 5 years old more than 50% of kids go on the computer and or tablets. Starting to use the internet at such a young age slows down the child’s learning ability, they should be practicing to sound out words and learn to write letters, but because of the internet that makes it a lot harder than how it should be. I immensely agree with Coben because there is so many dangers that the internet has to offer that we don't know about. In the article, “As Kids Go Online, New Tools For Parents To Spy” a child who has a love for sports was watching the game on YouTube and an advertisement pops up and shows a man smoking, and a woman dancing provocatively. Your child may be searching innocent and kid-friendly videos, but the ads are not as kid-friendly as your child’s search history. This situation was merely a rough experience because there are many other situations where it is way worse. On the internet, there are stalkers, impersonators, scammers, and so much more. Does the internet make us smarter or dumber is a question that has been asked more frequently, especially when referring to my generation. In Nicholas Carr’s article “Does the Internet Making Us Smarter or Dumber?” he adamantly believes that the internet is in fact making us dumber with its various distractions, hindering cognitive development, and affecting our knowledge retention. He supports his belief with studies such as the one conducted at a university where students were divided and only half were allowed to use their computers during class while the others were not (Carr,22) . The outcome showed that those who did not use the internet did better on the tests (22). After reading this article it made me ask the question myself and I believe that the internet is making me smarter in certain ways and dumber in others.

Consequently, children are spending more time in their rooms on their computers than they are outside doing physical activities and spending time with friends and family. The phrase "let kids be kids" has changed from letting kids play around outside to letting kids use their tablets all day long. Families are slowly but surely being torn apart by their technology use and they aren’t even aware of it. Parents are using their children for likes on sites like Facebook in hopes of whatever videos they post going viral and embarrassing their children.
