It was the summer of 2013 when I was living with my grandparents and they told me about volunteering at the church. I didn’t know what they were talking about, so I took the initiative to go find out for myself that following Sunday. I was in the balcony on Sunday, when I heard the announcements saying we can volunteer for their hope food pantry. I was excited because it was going to be a chance where I can help other and get community service hours. Volunteering I began to think positive thoughts and telling myself “ I am doing a good deed”. In efforts to eliminate hunger in the Austin Community, Hope Church operates a food pantry that provides food and supplies to local residents within the 60651 and 60644 postal zip codes. The Pantry is operated by a friendly volunteer staff who’s there to be a blessing to others! The hope food pantry is a non-profit organization which distributes food to a variety of community agencies which serve the people in need. Last year alone, over 1 million pounds of food was distributed throughout our community. The hope food pantry also host special events to raise money and food for our community. For every dollar raised, the food pantry can provide ten meals to the needy. When I first volunteered at the pantry I was just a young boy. I chose to volunteer my time to the food pantry because they are my church and I always wanted to be able to help people in need. Ending hunger, not only in our community, but in America is important to me. The thought of a child without a meal is truly heartbreaking. I couldn’t imagine being in need of food and shelter. The Alameda County Community Food Bank has been in existence helping people since 1985 and serves as the central clearinghouse for donated food in Alameda County (Alameda County Food Bank, 2007). The Food Bank provides assistance to the low-income, working poor adults, the elderly, people with disabilities, abuse survivors, people living with AIDS, and the homeless (Alameda County Food Bank, 2007). Assistance is provided through numerous community based organizations and conducts community education on topics of hunger and poverty.
This program provides individuals and families from the community with a hot meal, groceries, and any available clothing and apparel donations. A form of identification is mandatory to participate in the food basket. LifeSource Ministries prepares all of the food and brings all of the groceries. Many of the families in this community depend on this monthly event to feed themselves and their children.

“A Place at the Table” is a documentary about the millions of Americans that are on the food stamp program. This group of people has been growing at a depressing rate for the last few decades. The film begins with exterior shots of various big cities in the U.S, before coming to a smaller one, Collbran, Colorado, rural town comprised of humble, needy people who are struggling to find the next meal. We see a church leader recall how when he began giving out warm meals to the public, where anyone can come and get a free meal, on Wednesday night, and an astounding 120 people showed up. It was a sign that a large number of people in Collbran were hungry and needing help. Coming from a community where everyone had what they needed this really shocked me. It made me think about that anyone around me could be struggling with food.
From what was just receiving volunteer hours with Rockdale Emergency Relief by graciously assisting with the preparation of 150 sack lunches daily, opened the door of a returned passion. One after another, I was filling multiple brown paper bags with a sandwich, bag of chips, a Capri Sun, and a healthy fruit snack while preparing to make my rounds for delivery to my assigned neighborhoods within Rockdale County. At each stop, I will never forget the innocent face of each child that waited for this delivery. I felt as if I were driving an ice-cream truck as all the children stumbled over one another running out of their homes towards us, Summer Lunch Program volunteers, with joy anticipating their sack lunches. Questions ran through my head wondering how one could be so ecstatic about what I had prepared in each bag. It was not candy, ice-cream, nor toys, but it was proper nourishment to each growing body reaching for their meal. As an important factor to their daily function, I could comprehend by their eagerness how much this delivery meant to each child and their parents or caregivers, and that made my heart melt. Imagine a single mother, living in a poverty stricken neighborhood without any personal means of transportation. She walks down the stone-cold streets of Brooklyn and every corner she turns there is either a neon-green sign flashing 7-11 or a red-orange clown spinning a sign reading McDonald’s. In order to reach a supermarket or grocery store she leaves her kids behind, because of the hassle and danger of New York subways, and travels about two miles to feed her and her children a nutritious meal. Although eliminating food deserts in impoverished neighborhoods may not seem possible overnight or have an immediate effect, communities should come together to raise money to build a local grocery store or placing a healthy food trucks down the street, which can soon become a catalyst for completely
People still struggle to cover payments on their cars, homes, and utilities. The Covenant Food Kitchen in Willimantic, Connecticut served about 23,385 meals last year to a total of about 92 individuals, but nutritional assistance programs will only go so far, and even getting to places that offer assistance is a struggle for some. SNAP can reduce food insecurity in a household by about five to ten percent in six months, but that five to ten percent does not make that much of a difference in the long run.
The amount of people in America that struggle to get enough to eat is staggering. While there are government agencies that provide assistance to some, many do not meet the income qualifications that are required. I attended Mary’s Kitchen on June 18, 2016 at 517 W Struck Ave, Orange, California 82867. I heard about this organization from one of my instructor who is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International. Mary’s Kitchen is a non-profit organization that helps less fortunate people in the Orange County. It is run by all volunteers as they provide compassionate care to others. The Sigma Theta Tau International has set up a Homeless Outreach Tent Clinic at Mary’s Kitchen. I visited the Homeless Outreach Tent Clinic. I had the opportunity to volunteer and meet a lot of nurses. We started at 9 in the morning and finished at 12 in the afternoon. I really enjoyed volunteering there as it made me more aware about poverty and the needs of homeless population.
The pantry was a busy place. Currently, we don’t have a partnership with this pantry. I spoke with the person in charge on site, Cheryl or Sheri. She said we would have to ask Lt. Terry Olson, the person in charge of the pantry, if we could come in for nutrition education. However, the woman I spoke with seemed very receptive to our ideas and the other initiatives we were doing at other pantries.
We, Aimee Johnson and Jessie Virnig, along with Amy Wilson and Shawn Klimek, decided to try to give the homeless a little hope. The week before Christmas we went door to door and collected food for the local homeless shelter. We decided to focus on collecting food because around the Christmas season, a lot of emphasis is put on toy drives and people sometimes overlook the fact that the homeless still need to eat. The social conditions in which homeless youth find themselves, may result in absence of or poor access to nutritious food. This can be defined as food insecurity, where an individual has the inability to consume an adequate diet (Health Canada, 2012). For the youth living on streets, education becomes an obstacle, which may lead to unstable work, and therefore inconsistent income. They have to settle with low value jobs to earn just enough to feed themselves on a daily basis – the hand-to-mouth concept. Therefore, there are very limited options that the homeless youth are left with when it comes to food. When buying food, they tend to choose the cheaper alternative foods which are usually unhealthy and have little to no nutritional value to the body. Examples of these kinds of food include pizza, burgers, or perishable food items that are ready-to-eat (Dachner & Tarasuk, 2002). From our everyday experience, one can say that too much unhealthy foods can cause long-term health issues, ranging from diabetes to heart disease. Eventually, the immune system weakens, and serious complications may occur for the individual. It may be difficult for the homeless youth to access any health care services; so many times the symptoms for these diseases can go undiagnosed. At times, the homeless youth tend to go extending periods of time without food, resulting in intense hunger. Hunger is the consequence of food insecurity. It is the resulting feeling of discomfort, weakness, illness and pain – all of which play a great role on the health of youth (Jovanovic, Lecture 9).
