Recommended: What is home? what is its significance

Home and house, two words that in essence are the same, but they hold vastly different meaning on a deeper level. A house as defined by Merriam Webster’s Dictionary is “a building in which a family lives.” A home as defined by Merriam Webster’s Dictionary is “the place (such as a house or apartment) where a person lives.” The two definitions are virtually identical in meaning and yet to people a house does not hold much emotion. A house has more of a solid entity while a home has an emotional connection. Toni Morrison’s novella Home, several of Nikky Finney’s poems from Head off and Split, and personal experience demonstrate the difference between a house and a home. Home may be an explicit building, a family, friends, or an entire town. I consider my home to be where my family is even if the building changes. My family is where I find comfort, safety, pride, love and belonging. The feeling of comfort or safety, pride, love and belonging are what creates a home. These characteristics of a home are what allow an individual to grow into the best possible version of them. Home is a place where one should feel comfortable and safe. This aspect of a home is especially important as child. Comfort and safety is key to allowing a child to be able to explore who they are and in allowing the child to develop into a successful person. In Home Frank Money did not feel comfortable or safe in Lotus, Georgia. Lotus was described as having an unforgiving population, isolated, and indifferent to Frank’s future (Morrison 16). As a child, Frank was even deprived of a bed, which many view as a standard necessity of a home. His parents busy working, were not able to look after him and so he was left to be raised by his harsh “wicked witch” grandm... ... middle of paper ... ...aving survived numerous hurricanes. She was strong and proud enough to go against what everyone wanted her to do and stay in her home even though it was not logical. Through her efforts in paying off her house she became a stronger woman. My home started off unstable, but turned into a fortress, which I can turn to when ever I need it. I take pride in where I come from because I know how hard everyone in family had to work to get our home to where it is today. It is saying that the one place a child can feel safe is in or at his/her house where he/she has “… cedar chips, the water bottle full / and dripping next to wilted greens…” (8-9). It may not be the first place a child would want to go back to when he/she is in trouble but the option will always there. This house is the child’s safe haven and protection from the outside world; a place to feel safe, protected, and nourished. For example, the “…children bring you apples. / They’ll rub your fur and bring / another and another” (19-21). This text shows that no matter what happens the parents will be there to show care and love for their children without asking any questions. I like how the author worded the three quotes from above.
