History shows that slavery consisted of African Americans being treated inferior to whites. Slaves were mostly African Americans and even though today slavery is over people still look at blacks as less important than whites. Slavery has impacted our society today because people are still prejudice and discriminatory towards African Americans, they are still living in poverty and don’t have proper education and they don’t have an equal opportunity for jobs. Still today African Americans continue to lag behind whites. In our past history, African Americans were slaves and were viewed as less important than whites. Still today in our society, people are prejudice and discriminatory against blacks. Many people still look at blacks differently because of how they were treated as slaves. As a result, blacks don’t get the same opportunities as whites with housing, education, employment and healthcare. The white people in the southern states are not as accepting to blacks and discrimination is more common there because that is where a lot of slavery was in history. The majority of blacks in America still live in extreme, deep poverty and a lot of them never receive a proper education. According to Phil Jackson’s article “Remembering the Millions the American Dream Left,” 30% black Americans in Illinois live in poverty while only 8% white Americans do. One way African Americans can move out of poverty is by getting a better education but because the blacks have such low income, they can’t afford a better education. Therefore, there is a rare chance they will ever get out of poverty. Many African Americans never got a proper education growing up which has led to unemployment. According to the New York Times, historically the unemployment for blacks has always been higher than whites. There has always been a lot of African Americans that lack skills and have low wages are losing their jobs today. Also according to the New York Times, in New York City there are about 80,000 more unemployed blacks than whites even though there are roughly 1.5 million more whites than blacks in the city. This unemployment rate reveals racism because many employers continue to discriminate against African Americans. Slavery has impacted our society today because people are still prejudiced and discriminatory towards African Americans. Still in this day, African Americans living in poverty don’t have proper education and are not given equal opportunities for jobs.
The population of African Americans from 1865 to 1900 had limited social freedom. Social limitations are limitations that relate “…to society and the way people interact with each other,” as defined by the lesson. One example of a social limitation African Americans experienced at the time is the white supremacy terrorist group, the Ku Klux Klan or the KKK. The KKK started as a social club formed by former confederate soldiers, which rapidly became a domestic terrorist organization. The KKK members were white supremacists who’s objective was to ward off African Americans from using their new political power. In an attempts to achieve their objective, Klansmen would burn African American schools, scare and threaten voters, destroy the homes of African Americans and also the homes of whites who supported African American rights. The greatest terror the KKK imposed was that of lynching. Lynching may be defined via the lesson as, “…public hanging for an alleged offense without benefit of trial.” As one can imagine these tactics struck fear into African Americans and the KKK was achiev...
Today I am here to convince you that although slavery happened hundreds of years ago, it still affects black people in America today.
The world changed because of slavery and is the way it is because of the history of America. We cannot change the past, but we can change the future. Thank God the world is not the way it was. I cannot imagine what painful lives the slaves had to endure. But we can become knowledgeable about the history of slavery and America and learn from it in many different ways.
African Americans were very questionable at first in the Civil War. The Union Navy had been already been accepting African American volunteers. Frederick Douglass thought that the military would help the African Americans have equal rights if they fought with them. Many children helped in the Civil War also, no matter how old they were. Because the African Americans were unfavorable, black units were not used in combat as they might have been. Nevertheless, the African Americans fought in numerous battles. African Americans fought gallantly. Northern leaders also saw another reason to have African Americans in the Civil War is that the Union needed soldiers. Congress aloud them to enlist them because they thought they might as well have more soldiers.
The effects of slavery linger in this country even today. After the Civil War and even the Reconstruction period, racial inequality and
Slavery shaped the lives of both black and whites alike in ways such as social reforms, marriages, and economic stimulation. Radical abolitionism was a way many people fought back against slavery. The southerners, though, had reasons to believe slavery to be good. There were also repercussions, such as the Civil War, that shines slavery positively. Slavery was a complicated problem that we have grown past.
African American history plays a huge role in history today. From decades of research we can see the process that this culture went through and how they were depressed and deculturalized. In school, we take the time to learn about African American History but, we fail to see the aspects that African Americans had to overcome to be where they are today. We also fail to view life in their shoes and fundamentally understand the hardships and processes that they went through. African Americans were treated so terribly and poor in the last century and, they still are today. As a subordinate race to the American White race, African Americans were not treated equal, fair, human, or right under any circumstances. Being in the subordinate position African Americans are controlled by the higher white group in everything that they do.
Slavery changed how people lived back then and now. The Europeans bought many slaves and crammed them into a ship to be sent to another continent. Europeans bought slaves from the African and put them into a ship with no space, many africans died on the ship because of the poor conditions. The african population dropped because of constant exportation of people. The slave trade impacted many lives, it made the Europeans lives easier but made the lives of the slaves extremely hard. But because of this dehumanization the lives of the african americans are greatly affected in today's society. After being treated like property the african americans had a rough road to being treated like humans again.
To start, African Americans have never had a fair chance for success in the United States. From colonial chattel slavery to the era of Jim Crowe to the contemporary use of mass incarceration, there are always regulations in place to keep the black population from prospering. These institutional problems that black youth face today encompass police brutality and litigation, our discriminatory capitalist economy and educational system. All these barriers intersect to form an overall mountain of
Slavery today is a large concern to many people, just as it always has been. Any type of slavery is considered immoral and unjust in today’s society and standards. However, before the Civil War, slavery was as common as owning a dog today. Many in the United States, particularly in the South, viewed slavery as a “positive good” and owned slaves that were crucial to their business and income. However, the Civil War then changed the lifestyle of many southerners in a negative way. After the Civil War, slavery was abolished and any man owning a slave was required to let them free and view them as an equal. This was a difficult thing to do and eventually led to a downfall and destroyed economy in the southern United States. Abolishing slavery hurt the country economically and socially at the time and slavery was socially acceptable.
In the place of slavery came racial segregation. “The Jim Crow laws governed almost every aspect of life for African Americans living below the Mason-Dixon Line.” (Carson and Bonk) Slavery made an African American’s life controlled by his/her owner. The Jim Crow laws make the government their owner; therefore, the government controlled the African Americans. “Jim Crow laws allowed African Americans to be legally segregated. From that point on, African Americans were treated worse than ever before.” Some historians say that African Americans were treated better in slavery (in the 1800’s) than under the Jim Crow laws. Before the Jim Crow laws, there was slavery. They were both backed by the idea of black inferiority; both were also dominated mainly by the belief of white superiority. But not everyone believed in white superiority, but in equality.
Slavery's twin legacies to the present are the social and economic inferiority it conferred upon blacks and the cultural racism it instilled in whites. Both continue to haunt our society. Therefore, treating slavery's enduring legacy is necessarily controversial. Unlike slavery, racism is not over yet. (Loewen 143)
Poverty is rampant in African American communities. High poverty areas can have a big effect on African American education. A vast majority of African Americans receive public assistance, and since most blacks haven't graduated high school, they are forced to work jobs that pay minimum wage or less, or they are unemployed. Among racial and ethnic groups, African Americans have the highest destitution rate, 27.4 percent. While 23 percent of all African Americans live 100 percent below the poverty level. During the 1990s while the U.S was undergoing an economic boom the poverty level dropped from 29 percent in 1990 to 19 percent in 2000. The economic downturn in 2000 to 2010 caused the increase of the black family impoverishment rate to 24 percent.
Blacks look for jobs longer and sometimes more aggressively than whites do and they are 44% less likely to get hired for the job even when they are just as qualified. Today they have a law that jobs cannot discriminate on who to hire just because of their race or ethnicity, and even though that’s a law some jobs still discriminate, they just use a different reason for why they could not hire you. Other races have heard so many stereotypes and stories about African Americans and they also grew up being taught certain beliefs which become part of the economy.
Slavery was a condition that no human being should ever endure. It is a mechanism that shaped every aspect of everyone living at that time period. Common and the most powerful critiques of this institution was that it broke up families, resulted in poor living conditions, and shaped the lives of everyone involved from youth to their adulth
