Section A: Plan of Investigation
The Islamic Moors occupied the Iberian Peninsula between 711 CE and 1492 CE, from the Middle Ages of Europe until the conquer of Grenada. This investigation attempts to evaluate the impact of technology and science in Moorish Spain. The relevance of this investigation is found in its inquiry as to the basis of post-Middle Ages European science, which became modern science. The degree to which relatively advanced Islamic astronomy was present in Moorish Spain, the degree to which Islamic-level astronomy was found in pre-Moorish (600 CE-700 CE) European astronomy, and the degree to which post-Moorish (1500 CE – 1600 CE) European astronomy reflected Islamic astronomy will be addressed in order to form conclusions. These issues will be evaluated by examination of “When the Moors Ruled Spain”, a documentary directed by Rowan Deacon, The Venture of Islam, by Marshall Hodgson, and online resources detailing the history of the Moors, European science, and Islamic science.

The film “Iowa- An American Portrait” was narrated by Tom Brokaw. It described the land, people, education, work, religion, and family life of Iowa. One of the main topics of the film was the general view of Iowa- the Farm State. Iowa has more than two- hundred- thousand farms; ninety- eight percent of Iowa’s total land is used for production; with ninety percent of total land being used for the production of food.
This documentary touches on every aspect of what life was like in Islamic Spain and the significance of the events that occurred there. In the fifth century, Barbarians collapsed the Roman Empire and Europe entered the Dark Ages. Around this time the Visigoths expanded their empire by heading for Spain. Upon arriving in Spain, the Visigoths encountered Jews whom they treated somewhat gently until the Visigoths converted to Catholicism; the Visigoths then overran Jews. Soon after, Muslims from North Africa known as Berbers decided to invade the Iberian Peninsula in hopes to take control of Spain and expand the Muslim reign, which they did.
Even before the eve of the Revolution, the colonists constantly had the image of independence lingering in the back of their heads. The colonists felt that they were first on a loose leash, and as that leash tightened over the years, the colonists began to understand their true culture and identity. As time passed, the colonists developed a greater sense of their identity and unity as Americans and by the eve of the Revolution, even though at first the colonists were unorganized and had problems with being united, they remained determined to gain their identity and unity as Americans.
EPIC is the Educational Participation in Communities. This organization involves students as volunteers in the fight against poverty and social neglect in local communities. The goal is social awareness and student involvement. It says that poverty, neglect, and social inequity are a growing reality for millions of people in America. Families are losing their homes, people can't find good jobs, children go hungry, and education in the inner-city is a disaster. There is a is problem because the public and community programs that serve as a safety net to assist such populations are strained beyond their capacity and are usually understaffed and under-funded. Since they cannot do the job without help, EPIC helps. It recruits college students to do volunteer work in schools, hospitals, community centers, legal aid, probation, youth agencies, and other and public service programs. EPIC volunteers provide thousands of volunteer hours to the community.
Mississippi has a long history of good and bad events. After the Civil War, reconstruction was necessary to repair the South and encourage the people to reenter the Union. In the days of the Civil Rights Movement Mississippi made history in a bad way. Those were tough times for a state that prided itself on self-reliance and determination while covering up hate. Mississippi and its people have always been dedicated to home and family, but it was not a perfect union of races and classes. Railways and waterways were the means to get crops to the Gulf of Mexico. There ships were waiting to take cotton and sugar cane to other countries. The Mississippi River is one of the ways to move goods, services, and people. Music is a part of the old and new Mississippi. Mississippi struggles to lift itself out of the past and into the future. Mississippi is the birth place of the Blues. Music is one way that all people of Mississippi come together in the same place at the same time. Music is alive and well at church, in community buildings, and even schools.
United States (History), story of how the republic developed from colonial beginnings in the 16th century, when the first European explorers arrived, until modern times. As the nation developed, it expanded westward from small settlements along the Atlantic Coast, eventually including all the territory between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans across the middle of the North American continent, as well as two noncontiguous states and a number of territories. At the same time, the population and the economy of the United States grew and changed dramatically. The population diversified as immigrants arrived from all countries of the world. From its beginnings as a remote English colony, the United States has developed the largest economy in the world. Throughout its history, the United States has faced struggles, both within the country—between various ethnic, religious, political, and economic groups—and with other nations. The efforts to deal with and resolve these struggles have shaped the United States of America into the 21st century.
It is important to be proud of who you are and where you have come from. After watching the film American History X, whites are far from proud. We are ashamed to admit that people just like us can act in such a horrible and disillusioned way toward those that are different. As you watch, you see scenes of brutal violence, hear songs of hate and feel the pain of all involved. These acts show the viewers how easily young minds can be influenced to believe anything. Teachers, parents, siblings or any person of authority in a child's life can have this deep of an impact on them. American History X is the story of how powerful an influence people of importance can have upon youth. Adults can be the enemy of many teenagers. Yet when a kid is vulnerable and looking for adoration and love, they can latch onto any adult that makes them feel important or special. Cameron is the first example of the adult filling an empty space. Both Derek and Danny Vinyard, the neo-Nazi brothers of the film, fall for every word Cameron says to them. At one point in the film, Cam makes a comment to Danny about his black school principal Dr. Sweeney. To him, Sweeny is a "manipulative, self-righteous Uncle Tom" for making Dan re- write a civil rights paper because it was about Mein Kampf. Sweeney has his own opinions about Cameron stating that he preys on "insecure, frustrated, and impressionable kids. This assumption is dead on. As the organizer and unofficial leader of the Venice Beach white gang, what the middle-aged Cameron has to say about being a patriot and a proud "white Protestant" fills a void for the kids. The Islamic Empire explored natural philosophy and employed these understandings in instrumentality. They accumulated the natural philosophy of other cultures and expanded on their ideas in accordance with practicality. The Islamic Empire was the most advanced scientific nation for 500 years but declined because there was not much need for improvement in functioning. Career scientist only existed amongst the rich. The Islamic Empire is focused on the instrumentality of science, but even with the pronounced focus of instrumentality, the Islamic Empire experienced a dynamic between the dichotomy of instrumentality and natural philosophy, each seemingly distinct branch of science ebbing and flowing with the support and advancement of one another.
In 1625, Jean de Brebeuf a French Jesuit missionary along with other Jesuit missionaries and servants set out and traveled to present day Georgia Bay. The aim of this voyage was the convert the native people of this land known as the Wendat to Christianity. In order to do this, several Jesuit missions were built near the Georgian Bay. However, it was clear from the beginning that the Hurons or Wendat people would not easily accept Brebeuf’s religion of Christinanity. There were many challenges, which he face during his time in the Wendat society, but eventually he was able to convert a sizeable amount of people.
A Vanished World: Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Medieval Spain is survey medieval Spain, where Christians, Jews, and Muslims once lived side by side and the Muslims were in charge. The book tries to lead the reader to the conclusion that there is indeed a historical precedent for the three major religions establishing a beneficially symbiotic relationship which may be an enduring lesson for coexistence. The author, Chris Lowney, is an ex-Jesuit and holds degrees in medieval history and philosophy.
Islamic civilization began in Arabia, but it spread to many areas in the proximity of the peninsula. It spread as far as Spain, as well as many areas between the two locations. The distinction between modern and medieval science was described as medieval science being more theoretical in nature and modern being of the more applied variety. Through the further presentation of the plethora of Islamic scientists, covering fields as diverse as astronomy, medicine, chemistry, and physics it has been shown, without a doubt, that significant scientific contributions were made in this period. Finally, the source of this misconception was exposed through the common accidental perception of the past as a European narrative. History can easily be focused around Europe, and to do so produces a view of the medieval era being stagnant. However, when one looks at the greater global picture, it is clear that the Islamic world more than makes up for this lull in innovation, successfully brightening the “Dark Age”.
The medieval Islamic world of science started as a controversial field to be working in. The scientific practices went against the beliefs of the people because it stated things that were the opposite of the readings in the Koran. Religious peoples said that Allah created everything in existence himself while scientists said that everything occurred naturally. Even though there was conflict over the beliefs of the people, the Islamic scientists still managed to prosper and produce a Golden Age of Science in the medieval Islamic world. The contribution of the Arabo-Islamic scholars to the genesis of modern sciences constitutes a passionately debated topic of research, and in many encyclopedias of science and its history, the Arabo-Islamic scholars are credited only with preserving Greek learning for European medieval scholars. However, they did add their own innovations, practices, and theories, and the contributions to the sciences were so significant and spread out, it is unbelievable to look back on them. These many fields include medicine, astronomy, mathematics, and civil engineering.
