Final Major Assignment/Course Final Assignment details: Analyze the components of the hero’s journey. Basically, support the argument that Jaws follows the epic hero cycle. Name specific examples from the movie and connect them to the hero’s journey. However, this is not a plot summary. You are not retelling the story, but selecting examples to support the analysis. The first major step is a call to adventure. In this step, there’s something in the hero’s life that requires them to do something or go somewhere and take some type of action. Second, the hero must enter the unknown. This step sends the hero into a new world, entering something unfamiliar to the hero. By entering unfamiliar territory, whether it’s a place, an event never experiences, there are challenges and temptations the hero must face. With every new world comes new challenges. Dealing with new people or being alone. Once leaving the unknown, our hero, according to his/her circumstances must face his demons by slaying the dragon. It is now our hero overcomes to be a better version of himself/herself. Slaying the dragon is something the hero probably ran from their entire life up until this point. It’s what has scared our hero the most. Finally, we deal with death and rebirth. Once the hero slays the dragon, he’s changed. Whether the dragon was an internal or external element, there’s always an internal peace that comes from within the soul. The part of our life that we feared is gone and the hero is reborn, transformed into a different person. So, applying Jaws to the hero journey, our hero is Chief Brody. Quint has destroyed the radio and pushed the ship until the motor explodes and the vessel begins to take on water. Hooper has escaped death by diving to the bottom of the ocean here and Quint has already been killed by the shark. Brody is facing one last effort to shoot the compressed air cylinder lodged in the sharks mouth or die trying. Reward Once the shark is killed the film ends rather quickly. The immediate reward for Brody is that Amity will once again be safe, as well as the fact that he is no longer threatened himself. He also discovers that Hooper hasn’t been killed and that together they will be able to swim back to shore. The Road Back The road back is quite literally the distance they will need to swim back to shore. It is during this final sequence that we see how Brody has changed and ultimately we are led right into the resurrection and the return with the elixir. Resurrection The resurrection occurs when Brody tells Hooper how he ‘used to hate the water’. He has faced his fears and came out triumphant. He is saddened by the loss of Quint but is vindicated by successfully killing the shark. Return with
