Heavy metal in the 1980’s is hard to describe. Its static style did not change much from the 1970’s, but the lyrics, image, and theatrics took a step forward. Heavy metal had a huge impact in the 1980’s and there were many successful bands.
Van Halen took heavy metal to new heights. After more than two decades of playing sold-out concert halls, selling millions of albums and enduring various lineup changes and solo projects, Van Halen is recognized as one of the most resilient and successful rock bands to emerge from the 1970s and continue into the 1980’s. Eddie and Alex Van Halen were raised in Pasadena, the children of Dutch immigrants who immigrated to California in 1967. The Van Halen brothers grew up taking classical piano lessons. Eddie played guitar and Alex played the drums as teenagers. In 1974, they hooked up with David Lee Roth (vocals) and Michael Anthony (bass), while gigging around town in their band Mammoth. Within a few years, they had become one of the most popular bands on the Los Angeles scene. Fans packed L.A.'s smoky rock clubs to check out Eddie's unconventional guitar riffs and Roth's over-the-top showmanship.
In 1976, Gene Simmons noticed the group at a local club and gave them a recording session, and soon after Van Halen was signed to Waner Bros. Their debut album, Van Halen, was released in 1978 and included the hit singles "Runnin' With the Devil" and a cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me." Eddie Van Halen took electric guitar technique to new heights with his patented two-handed tapping and pull-off effects, while Roth's tongue-in-cheek histrionics proved to be a refreshing alternative in an industry chock full of self-important rock stars. Within six months of its release, Van Halen was certified platinum. The album not only launched Van Halen's career, but it came to influence countless American rock bands during the next decade.
During the next few years, Van Halen became one of the hardest working and most profitable bands in the recording industry, releasing a string of multi-platinum albums in quick succession; 1979's Van Halen II, 1980's Women and Children First, 1981's Fair Warning and 1982's Diver Down. But it was the album 1984, released on New Year's Day of that year that solidified the band's superstar status. The album contained the mega-hits "Jump," "Panama" and "H...

The crowd, convinced that the band have sold out to the Yankee Dollar and turned their backs on their home country, greet them with a rain of tomatoes and beer cans.
Def Leppard released many albums such as, Pyromania with the single “Photograph,” and Hysteria with singles such as "Women", "Animal", "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Love Bites", "Armageddon It", "Hysteria" and "Rocket". Def Leppard was an English band that showed the other bands how it was done. Their career started in 1977 and continued through 2002 with the “X” tour.
Heavy metal is an amazing thing that took its unique and amazing sounds to new heights. Unfortunately due to highly commercialized excess driven hair bands the genre was sent in to another decline where the music would be reabsorbed into new genres. By around 1990 most heavy metal had evolved into other rock genres like hard rock, grunge, gothic rock, gothic metal, thrash metal, speed metal, doom metal, and nu metal.
What emerged after the explosion of rock and roll in the 1950s abandoned the roll and has now come to be known just as classic rock. This rock that was created following the decade of The King became a completely unique and different sound that changed the musical landscape and what was once a single, unified genre gave way for multitudes of variation in its sounds. These new sounds, that came mostly from abroad, had been notably influenced by the American rock of the 1950s, such as Elvis, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. These pioneers of rock came to be the essential reason for the arrival of the British Invasion and other sounds that defined the decade of the 1960s.

Rock is derived from the genre Rock and Roll, and in the 1960’s passed through what many called the “golden age”. During this decade was when rock was reassured as a musical genre, and became due to the advances in the radio technologies on the last decade. During this period, several of the best rock bands and artists appeared like The Beatles or Jimmy Hendrix.
Such as the tight leather pants and jackets, ripped jeans and jackets. Slick hair for men and frizzed up hair for women. It all became very popular in a variety of ages. No matter what are you were that was the style and people wanted to wear it. Hair styles were also very popular in all age ranges. From the oldest to the youngest, everyone wanted the slick hair for men and proofed up for women. Along with all the fashion rock and roll also brought along the popularity of the motorcycle as a method of transportation. Anyone that listened to rock and roll wanted to own one and ride one. Rock and roll also became a way of

When they first came to the United States they supported Vanilla Fudge. They also played in clubs to start their American popularity. After they played in the clubs they got their first headlining tour and toured again that. They were playing their fifth tour by the March of 1970. Led Zeppelin the record was released by the Atlantic Records in 1969. Shortly after the record was released it was number eight and stayed in the top twenty for six weeks. When the Led Zeppelin II was released, it was Atlantic Records’ fastest selling album at 100,000 copies a week. They broke their own record in 1975 when “Physical Graffiti” that sold 500 copies an hour. All of their albums have gone platinum.
In the early 1980s, the "new wave" movement, a sub genre of punk rock that began in the '70s, was generating a more sophisticated pop sound. In Britain, artists including bands such as the Clash, Squeeze, and the Police attained both critical and commercial acceptance. The Pretenders, another British band established in the late 70s, was led by an American-born singer and songwriter, Chrissie Hynde. In the United States, the Los Angeles-based band X navigated the transition from punk to new wave, and the New York-based group Talking Heads with a big assist from MTV, succeeded in fusing art rock with funk and African rhythms. Which leads me to my next new 80's genre.
With rioting and terrorism taking place around the world, more aggressive and rebellious styles were being created. The punk look came with this; singers like Johnny Rotton and bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were a few to lead a new generation of teens. There was also the introduction of glam-rock in which musicians mixed glamour with rock. Davis Bowie was the most successful. Fans copied his "rooster" hair cut. He made the androgynous look popular.
The founding members of the most controversial heavy rock band of the late 1980s included Axl Rose (b. William Bailey, 6 February 1962, Lafayette, Indiana, USA) and Izzy Stradlin (b. Jeffrey Isbell, 8 April 1962, Lafayette, Indiana, USA). Vocalist Rose, who had first sung at the age of five in a church choir, met guitarist Stradlin in Los Angeles in 1984. He changed his name to Rose at the age of 17 when he discovered who his real father was, the Axl prefix coming from a band with whom he had rehearsed in Indiana. With Tracii Guns (guitar) and Rob Gardner (drums), they formed a rock band called Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns. Soon afterwards, Guns and Gardner left, to be replaced by drummer Steven Adler (b. 22 January 1965, Cleveland, Ohio, USA) and guitarist Slash (b. Saul Hudson, 23 July 1965, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England). With bass player Duff McKagan (b. Michael McKagan, 5 February 1964, Seattle, Washington, USA), the band was renamed Guns N'Roses. In 1986 the band was signed to Geffen Records. During 1987 they toured extensively and their debut, Appetite For Destruction, went on to sell 20 million copies worldwide and reached number 1 in the USA a year after its release date. In 1989, the eight-track album G N' R Lies was issued, becoming a big hit on both sides of the Atlantic, as were the singles ‘Sweet Child O' Mine’, ‘Paradise City’ and ‘Patience.’ During the 80’s the band suffered from it’s rock and roll lifestyle and consequently saw several band members come and go.
Funk, Soul, R&B, Pop, Hard Rock, Soft Rock and Disco were popular all over the world at this time, and in the late 1970s a new type of genre of music was born, hip-hop. Some of the best Rock and Roll we have ever seen was recorded in the 1970s, such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie. The early 70s was a lot similar to the late 60, The Rolling Stones, Beatles, Doors, and Jimi Hendrix were all very popular at this time. That was until Led Zeppelin formed and changed everything, “It’s truly impossible to oversell how brilliantly these records are produced; “rock” as an idea is really a ’70s idea, and Led Zeppelin established what that would mean and what it would sound like.”(Pitchfork, 2014) Led Zeppelin came along and emerged into something like The Beatles of the 70s. Every member in that band is considered one of if not the best in that field, and it is debateable that they are one of the best bands ever
Jagger and the rest of the band changed their look and style as the 1970s progressed. By mid-seventies they had become one of the most eclectic groups in Rock and Roll. By this time all their music was original compositions by Jagger and Richards. (Charlton) Jagger also had learned to play guitar and contributed guitar parts for certain songs on Sticky Fingers. Songs released off this album included “Sister Morphine” “Dead Flowers” and “Loving Cup.” For the Rolling Stones' highly publicized 1972 American tour, Jagger wore glam-rock clothing and glittery makeup on stage. Later in the decade they ventured into genres like disco and punk with the album Some Girls in 1978. (Charlton)
