Josh Moreau English 122 Persuasive Essay Rough Draft The issue of gun control has always been a hot topic among the American public. Most everyone, if asked, will tell you that gun control is an issue needed to be dealt with because of the event that took place at Columbine High School back on April 20th, 1999. The American public has been wrestling with gun control long before then. If we take a look back at August 1st, 1966 at the University of Texas, a man armed with a hunting rifle committed one of the most violent mass murders in history. Gun control refers to the Government placing restrictions on the American public to buy, own and sell firearms. If we read the constitution, our second amendment right is the right to bear arms. This has been the ongoing controversy of this issue. We the people say our constitutional right to buy and own firearms is being seized from us. The government is using our society’s violent incidents as cover to place restrictions and bans on firearms. This essay’s purpose is to provide proof that buying and owning firearms is our legal constitutional right and that our government is trying to attack the wrong angle when trying to fight crime involving guns in the United States. If we take a closer look into the U.S. Constitution, you will find that James Madison stated in Federalist 46 that the people need to have access to the same weapons the military has access to, incase of the event of a tyrannical uprising, the people would not be forced into government oppression. Now some people’s rebuttal to that is saying something along the lines of “well our founding fathers had no idea what AR15’s were at that time”. If we take that statement and apply it to other amendments of the constitution, our... ... middle of paper ... ...takes time to educate and promote safe gun practices and competency with firearms. The NRA’s official motto is “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”. I believe this is the sole valid argument when talking about gun control. If we look at almost all gun related incidents, most of the time the member involved has some motive or is mentally unstable. Shootings do not simply happen from the gun itself, but the person behind the gun. The NRA’s sole purpose is to get the negative misguided information that the government and media are spewing out, and turn it into truthful information used for the purpose of educating American’s on safe operation and proper use of firearms. Knowledge in this context is power. If the NRA can educate people into realizing guns are not the issue, viewpoints across the country would change, and the second amendment would stay intact.
