Renee Heikamp, 19, and case worker from the Catholic Children’s Aid Society (CCAS), Angie Martin, were charged with criminal negligence resulting in the 1997 death of newborn baby, Jordan Heikamp. The charges were dropped shortly after Jordan’s death, due to a lack of evidence from the investigation of a 63-day inquest. (CBC, 2001). Renee Heikamp and her baby were residing at the Anduhyaun shelter that services Aboriginal women fleeing abuse during the time of his death. Jordan Heikamp had starved to death, weighing only 4 pounds, 4 ounces less than what he weighed at his pre-mature birth, in May 1997; a photograph shown to witnesses at the inquest revealed the corpse of the baby who was little more than a skeleton.

Ashley Smith was a young girl that was placed in a juvenile detention centre at age 15 for throwing apples at a mail man. Her short sentence quickly extended into a life sentence because of so many infractions within the prison system. Ashley suffered from extreme mental health issues and was place in a psychiatric prison facility, however this facility was shown in the documentary to be corrupt and their actions with Ashley were extremely illegal. Furthermore, Ashley wasn’t given the proper help and treatment that she needed, instead she was physically and verbally abused by guards in the prison, and she ultimately passed away in the prison. Her death is still being debated about whether
First, “duty of care" is one of the elements of a cause of action that occurs when the law recognizes a relationship between two parties. Second, breach of the duty of care is another element that occurs as a result of failure to exercise care in the fulfillment of duties. Causation is the third element in that a breach of the duty of care must be the cause of injury to an injured person in accordance with law. Lastly, damage is an element of a cause of action that can be remedied through the use of money damages.
Carla Washburn, an incredible, inspirational woman that has sadly witnessed the 3 closest male figures in her life all pass on. This has resulted in Carla becoming depressed over the unbearable experience. Carla embraced in giving back to the community and that’s not surprising because she’s a person of spirituality. While, Carla is the client and is suffering through grief, it’s likely she’d benefit immensely from creating a program to work with the kids in the community and may give her a sense of worth she’s been seeking since these 3 tragedies.
The case of People v. Smith (1991) is a case settling the question of whether or not a past juvenile record could be used in the sentencing of an adult offender. The defendant, Ricky Franklin Smith, was convicted on his guilty plea to breaking and entering and being a habitual offender, fourth offense. His contention is that he should have been resentenced because the presentence investigation report contained an expunged juvenile record; he based his argument on Michigan Court Rules (MCR) MCR 5.913, now MCR 5.925(E) Expungement of Records, and believed that it could not be used and prejudiced the court.
The Lynne Gobbell case demonstrates that many people are not in favor of the purest form of freedom of speech. In this case, Lynne had a ‘Kerry for President’ sticker on her bumper, and although no harm came from this, her boss erupted and demanded she remove the sticker. After denying such a ridiculous request, she was fired immediately. In my opinion, this is outrageous because she was not causing anyone harm, and it affected nothing. People should be able to stand up for what they believe in, and should be able to freely represent what they stand for. Decorating vehicles should never have a negative impact on another person. For example, as a die-hard Dallas Cowboys football fan, I do not start breaking windows when I see other vehicles representing the San Francisco Forty Niners. I may not agree with what they represent, but I will gladly respect their opinions and continue to think freely while cheering for what I believe in. Mills’ harm principle suggests that the actions of individuals should only be limited to prevent harm to other individuals. It is easy to recognize that Lynne is not harming anyone, but instead she is the one being harmed; thus Mill’s would side with Lynne in a heartbeat. Karl Marx’s views on this case do not differ too much on this case as his ideas and beliefs would favor Lynne. His critiques of alienated labor and bourgeois freedom show how badly workers can be treated, as he believes workers tend to be taken for granted and treated badly by the upper class. Marx believes there are many different types of alienated labor and all affect workers in a variety of different ways. Marx and Lynne would both have defended Lynne if they were given such an opportunity to do so.
In Jalisa’s case summary, there are quite a few indications that this summary is trauma informed. In crisis situations, social workers work with survivors to identify needs and come up with plans that include referrals or recommendations that will work toward fulfilling the client’s needs (Goelitz & Stewart-Kahn, 2013). The text states that during the assessment process, social workers act as detectives, uncovering aspects of crisis needing consideration (Goelitz & Stewart-Kahn, 2013). The clinician conducting Jalisa’s assessment uncovered Jalisa and her family have a history of past trauma, fleeing homeland and relocating from refugee camp. Jalisa’s father also believes in corporal punishment and Jalisa has expressed fear receiving disciplinary actions from father. Jalisa’s clinician recommended further exploration of these incidents. Crisis situations also call for assessing the safety of the survivor. It was determined that Jalisa felt safe in her home, even with her father coming home for the weekend. A safety plan for Jalisa for the weekend was then established. As a summary indicator of trauma informed, the clinician assesses for mental health issues, stating that Jalisa did not exhibit any serious acute trauma related stress at this time.

Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fairpay Act, on January 29, 2009. It holds a historic honor of being the first law the president signed, while in office. This law, in simple terms, addressed unfair and unacceptable wage gaps. The Lilly Ledbetter Fairpay Act is a legislative correction to a May 2007 U.S. Supreme Court decision (Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co (Mathis and Jackson, 2011). This decision restricted the ability of victims who experienced pay discrimination to sue and receive damages, under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Mathis and Jackson, 2011). In Ledbetter Lilly Fairpay Act, the Court ruled that Lilly Ledbetter could receive no recourse from her employer (Mathis and Jackson, 2011).This decision came even though she was discriminated against by being paid less than her male colleagues were, for years. The Court ruled that Ledbetter had filed her complaint too late. This was based on the law’s 180-day deadline to sue from the day Ledbetter received her last discriminatory raise, rather than, as the law had previously made clear, from the day she received her last discriminatory paycheck (Mathis and Jackson, 2011).
As German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche quoted “It is impossible to suffer without making someone pay for it; every complaint already contains revenge.” The defendant Mary Barnett has been charged with the crime of second degree murder of the death of her six-month-old baby. In some sense, a mother who killed her own child ,out of personal relationships, is obviously guilty. However, based on current evidence, the verdict could be arguable. Barnett qualified some criteria of a second degree murderer such as intentionally leaving Alison alone to die in their apartment. Due to her mental state, Barnett was not aware she was leaving her children instead thought the child will taken care of whey she was at California. It comes to the reason that Mary

The Civil Rights Movement is a historic movement in the United States, that being said what we’ve been taught in the history books is only half the story told by the males of society. Though important characters like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Malcolm X are key players still in the movement what is important to understand is that there is another part of the story that had just as much if not more impact. These are the stories of women in the Southern states who were strong enough to give voice to the sexual assaults of Black women, showcasing the ugliness of the Southern states and by placing a limelight on these events (Lecture 4/6). This forced the slow erosion of white supremacy in Southern States as a means for these states
Alex, the senior electronics buyer for MegaShop, saw a great potential in acquiring digital cameras model JX-25 after he found the demand forecast for that specific product to be high (Coyle, J., & Novack, R., 2011). He saw a great opportunity to profit from the demand for these digital cameras but he needed a supplier that would provide him with the quantity that he needed at a low price (Coyle, J., & Novack, R., 2011). He had three offers, one from a supplier based in Japan, a second offer from a supplier based in India, and a third offer from a supplier based in Ukraine(Coyle, J., & Novack, R., 2011). Each of these suppliers had different prices and different ways to deliver the merchandise that would result in different total costs (Coyle,
