In our case study the 31 year old man was first evaluated for diarrhea, and he had continuous abdominal pain prior to his evaluation. That symptom automatically is associated with a disease affecting the digestive system. With obtaining 8-10 stools per day, there are definite vigorous parasites involved affecting this patient. This pear shaped trophozoite, flagellated protozoan is named Giardia Lamblia, which causes Giardiasis. Giardia Lamblia has a very unique way of affecting the body to perform its task. Giardiasis is a waterborne infection and can be transmitted in multiple ways of contamination. It is also the most common intestinal parasitic disease affecting humans. Giardia Lamblia reproduces through binary fission, by attaching to the …show more content…
Some less common symptoms associated with this infection include hives, itchy skin and swelling of the eyes and joints. It may sometimes seem as if even after the infection disappears the symptoms may reappear after certain weeks, or even days. Due to the chronic diarrhea, weight loss and failure to absorb lactose, fat and Vitamin A and B12 is another effect of this …show more content…
There are several medicines that can help rid of this disease. The most helpful and effective medications used are Metronidazole, Tinidazole, Nitazoxanide or Furazolidone. Alcohol should not be consumed when taking any of these medications. Pregnant women are not allowed to take these medications hence the effect it will have on the fetus. Metronidazole (flagyl) is the most commonly used antibiotic to this disease. Some side effects are nausea, metallic taste in mouth, vomiting, headache and dry mouth. Nitazoxanide is accessible in liquid form and must be taken with some type of food. Tinidazole is an anti protozoal antibiotic that helps treat certain bacterial maladies including Giardiasis. Common symptoms include dark urine, vomiting, headache, constipation, general body discomfort, stomach pain and
Giardia lamblia is a flagellated enteric protozoan parasite that is found in soil, food, and water (“Giardia lamblia” sec 1). This microorganism tends to live in the small intestines of humans. G. lamblia has two separate morphological stages. The first morphological stage is the trophozoite stage. In the trophozoite stage, this microorganism is shaped like a flattened pear. During this stage, the microbe is about ten to twelve micrometers long and about five to seven micrometers wide. Bilaterally the microbe is symmetrical and has two separate nuclei present. On the anterior side of the organism, there is a large sucking disk. This disk is the mechanism by which the parasite attaches to the mucosa of the host (“Morphology” par 1).
Many children around the world , especially in third world countries suffer many bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal system as a result of lack of awareness and the spread of the disease in the less attention to hygiene and the environment . In order to explain this word gastrointestinal tract infection , especially the stomach and intestines , it can result from infection by bacteria or virus or other parasites (1) . Some of the causes of inflammation as a result of eating food poisoning , especially meat and eggs . However , some symptoms of severe cases are headache , nausea , vomiting , general weakness , diarrhea and pain , the illness begins suddenly with high fever , vomiting , abdominal pain and stool liquid to water that may contain some blood and mucus . The result of drought through loss of fluids and salts and lead an alliance with the poisoning to the collapse of the circulatory system in diseases such as cholera (2) . It must be conducted in diagnosing bacterial to find the source of infection because it causes illness and death of millions in the third world and in particularly children as mentioned . In this report will refer to the most common types of bacteria cause gastrointestinal tract infection for example , Shigella , Salmonella , Vibrio and Campylobacter (3) . First of all , Shigella is gram negative , nonmotile , non lactose fermenting and H2S production . There are four important species , S. sonnei , S. flexneri , S. boydii and S. dysenteriae is the most serious . Next is Salmonella which is gram negative as well , non lactose fermenting and production H2S . These species are S. typhi and S. paratyphi found in humans and animals . Finally , Campylobacter is gram negati...
Treponema pallidum is a Gram-negative bacterium that has a spiral shape (1). They are about 6 to 20um in length and 18-20um in diameter (1). Treponema pallidum can only survive within a host which makes them obligate internal parasites, meaning that outside a host this organism will die due to the absence of nutrients, exposure to oxygen and heat. Also since this organism can’t be grown on a culture medium, animal models are used to study T. pallidum (1). Treponema pallidum bacteria consist of an inner and outer membrane with a thin peptidoglycan cell wall lacking liposaccharides (1). They have a distinctive corkscrew motility with the aid of 6 endoflagellas (2). The specific classifications of Treponema pallidum are the following: Scientific name- Treponema pallidum, Common name- Syphilis. Treponema causes syphilis, yaws, and spinta. Borrelia causes Lyme disease and relapsing fever and Leptospira causing leptospirosis (5). What makes this microorganism special to the human population is that it causes infection to its host by entering the body through microscopic skin or mucous abrasions via direct personal contact with the lesions (sexual or kissing), blood transfusions, accidental bacterial inoculation, and transplacental passage (2). According to the CDC website there are 55,400 people diagnosed with Syphilis every year and 322 reported cases of congenital Syphilis in 2012 (6).
Abstract: Salmonella is a bacterium that causes one of the most common intestinal infections in the United States - Salmonellosis. The chance of contracting this disease is significantly high, and more and more people are suffering from the symptoms and complications of Salmonella. This paper will discuss about the disease itself, the current outbreaks that are related to this disease, preventions and the treatments.
The disease occurs when pouches in the large intestine become infected and inflamed, Symptoms may include but not limited to severe abdominal pain often in the lower left side of the abdomen, constipation, diarrhea, nausea and fever.
Most people who are exposed to the fungus experience symptoms, but do not get sick. The signs—fever, cough, and exhaustion—are difficult to distinguish from the flu, and can last for weeks to months. In people with weakened immune systems, the infection can cause more severe conditions such as meningitis or death. There is no vaccine for valley fever, and many in the general public (including the medical community) know very little about the illness. This lack of knowledge has allowed many milder cases to go undiagnosed, leading to underreporting.
Necrotizing Fasciitis (flesh eating bacteria ) from an essay by Katrina Tram Duong, edited by S.N. Carson M.D.
Hypothesis about signs and symptoms: Symptoms: cramping, diarrhea, and dehydration. These symptoms were thought to be due to the disease withdrawing fluid from the blood and irritating the stomach and

People who suffer from chilblains will experience burning or itching to their skin, which worsens when changing to a warm environment from a cold one. Intense redness to the skin, fissuring and sores may develop.
...blood and increase the absorption and concentration of digoxin in the blood. This may reduce the effectiveness of ketoconazole or increase digoxin toxicity. Through unknown mechanisms, omeprazole may increase blood levels of saquinavir and reduce blood levels of nelfinavir and atazanavir, drugs that are used for treating patients with infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Omeprazole can be contraindicated in patient with hepatic impairment thus doctors are advised not to prescribe more than 20mg daily of omeprazole for such patients. [1] [3] [4]
This paper includes an understanding about the parasitic roundworm called trichinella. It gives detail of the disease, its transmission and source. Emphasizing how it effects the body, further explaining the epidemiology and how the parasite poses a threat. Also providing an overview of the various types of transmission, how it obscures the human body, and informs one about the symptoms that occurs with the ingestion of trichinella. This paper also addresses the various diagnostic procedures and the treatment required in order to treat Trichinellosis. This, emerging the complex world of the most common type of trichinella species called Trichinella spiralis. In addition, it raises awareness of the health risks and possible outcomes that can come along when the parasites begins migrating throughout the body.
In the spring of 1993, there was a massive widespread outbreak of acute watery diarrhea among the residents of Milwaukee. The results of the case presented indicate that this massive outbreak of watery diarrhea was caused by cryptosporidium oocysts that passed through the filtration system of one of the city's two water-treatment plants of Milwaukee Water Works (MWW). It was estimated that more than 400,000 people were affected during this outbreak. Milwaukee Department of Health reported numerous cases of gastrointestinal illness that resulted in absenteeism among employees and students of that area. Laboratory testing for 739 people’s stool samples identified cryptosporidium oocysts. Randomly selected people, who were identified as having clinical cryptosporidium infection, were contacted to conduct a telephone survey. Laboratory-confirmed cases of cryptosporidium infection compared to those who had clinical characteristics with cryptosporidiosis had significantly longer duration of diarrhea and more frequent bowl movements, vomiting, fever, and fatigue. Both groups had similar epidemiologic features and dates supporting the hypothesis stated in this study that the group who was interviewed through the phone survey had clinical cryptospori...
In this paper, I will discuss the epidemiological triangle, the protozoan Giardia, and the helminths Loiasis. The Epidemiologic Triangle is a traditional model developed by scientist to study infectious diseases (CDC 2018). The triangle has three vertices that consist of an agent, a host, and an environment. Giardia is microscopic parasite that causes a diarrhea illness known as giardiasis (CDC 2015). Giardia is the most common cause of parasitic gastrointestinal disease. Using the epidemiologic triangle as follows for Giardiasis:
Take your antibiotic medicine as told by your health care provider. Do not stop taking the antibiotic even if you start to feel better.
