Throughout history, many people have had good impacts on the lives of others around them. Few men, though, can say that they’ve greatly impacted the entire world in a positive manner. Galileo Galilei is one of these men. Not only did he challenge the ideologies that people had just blindly accepted for years at the time, but he can be seen as one of the (if not the) most central figures of the 17th century scientific revolution. This period contained a number of shocking developments that conflicted with the views society had held regarding the universe--and more specifically, the Earth around them--for over a millennium.
“I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't learn something from him” (qtd. in “Nothing But the Facts About Galileo Galilei”). This was the adage that Galileo lived by. He consistently made it his purpose to understand and decipher the world for himself, and there was not a single person in the world that he was incapable of learning something from. During his youth, Galileo’s father had wanted him to study medicine in order to make a profitable living; at this urging, Galileo attended a medical university, but almost failed and ended up leaving without a degree. During his time at the university, however, he did make his first (and one of his most important) discoveries. He found that the period of each swing of a pendulum was exactly the same. This would come to be known as the law of the pendulum and would provide the basis for the regulation of clocks. A few more of his benefits to society came purely from the fact that he needed money in order to pay his debts. And so while the good of Galileo may seem rather subtle and irrelevant to most of us and not nearly as direct and blatant as that of others in history, the impression he laid on humanity is not to be downplayed in any way. There’s a reason he is known as “the father of modern physics/astronomy.” Had Galileo not been such a diligent character with the determination to help society truly understand the world, many other great minds who may not have been quite as brave as to oppose the Church as he was could potentially not have ever shared their works and wouldn't even be a part of history as it’s known today. Without them and Galileo, there’s no telling where technology and science would be and what conceivably could be lacking in this modern age.
It is through science and its use that Galileo claimed one could better find and understand the truths of the Scriptures. If science is used correctly, as a tool to support claims, rather than blindly accepting the claims made by authoritative figures, Galileo claimed one would be able to fulfill the truths mentioned in the bible; to use one’s sense of reason. Religious people can find their solace through science, and scientist can find reason for their science through religion. This is evident in the fact that Galileo was a scientist but also had strongly rooted scriptural beliefs. Through a sense of balance he was able to use his religion to advance his scientific findings, and his science to justify his religion. With the right balance between the two one will be able to live an enlightened and enriched life.

Galileo, a man that stuck his head out to the world, but especially to the church, when maybe he should have done things a little differently. This particular book shows many accounts of the troubles between Galileo and the church, and with other bystanders. The book goes through the ups and downs of Galileo and the church, the hardships, and friendships that people held, and how hard it was to keep those friendships during the days of Galileo. The book reveals many alliances, and loyalties, but also it also reveals distrust, and clouded minds, of both Galileo and the church.
Galileo’s contributions to the science of Physics and Astronomy were many. His conviction was legendary. His willingness to suffer for his beliefs exemplify true courage in the name of truth, and has inspired others to venture intellectual independence from the Church‘s creeds, edicts, and proclamations. Perhaps these contributions led to the call for an investigation into Galileo's conviction, eventually calling for its reversal, in 1979 by Pope John Paul II. But regardless of his standing in the annals of the Catholic church he will always be the man who began the separation of science and religion.
Galileo Galilei was an Italian scientist, often referred to as “the father of modern physics”. He was one of the inventors of the telescope and a strong proponent of Copernicanism. Galileo used his invention to make astronomical observations which supported Copernicus’ heliocentric model of the universe. These discoveries led to a fierce dispute, because they contradicted the theory which was prevalent at the time – that the universe followed a geocentric model, a theory, which had been accepted by the Catholic Church. To address this dispute, Galileo wrote a letter to Tuscany’s Grand Duchess Christina, in which he presented his position on the relation between science and religion, stating that the Bible does not contradict science.
Galileo Galilei’s heliocentric theory upset the religious authorities because it was a new idea that was different from the commonly held biblical belief that the earth stayed still and was in the center of the universe. Galilei’s heliocentric theory represented the scientific revolution versus the Church’s long held biblically based belief. By writing down his thoughts and publicizing them, Galilei was making them accessible and understandable for all. The Church was threatened because his findings were in direct opposition to the Church’s beliefs. They understood Galilei to be contradicting the bible and committing heresy. Therefore, Galileo Galilei’s heliocentric theory and the Church’s push back against him represented the clash between the new generation that involved scientific knowledge, and the old generation that was based on religion and ancient philosophers.
I think that according to Galileo an individual gains knowledge of nature threw observation. Galileo believed no one really went out into the world as he did and used the senses that God gave us when we where created, to observe the physical world. He was a very persistent individual and was always looking further into what he observed our read. Many people went along with how he gained knowledge of nature but the few who did not tried to find other ways to damage his beliefs and ideas.

Galileo’s struggle with the Catholic Church is the essence of the problems people had introducing new ideas to the world. This was a time period during which people were often killed for what they believed by either the state or the church. Perhaps by not killing Galileo outright the church showed that times were starting to change, or maybe not. The episode will no doubt go down in history, however, as a turning point in science, and in religious thought.

When his father died in 1591 Galileo had to support his family. He looked for a job that paid more, and became professor of mathematics at the University of Padua where he stayed for eighteen years. He became very interested in astronomy at that time partly because of the discovery of a new star in 1604. (This turned out to be an exploding sun called a supernova). During these years he did more work on his theories of falling bodies, inclined planes and how projectiles travel. This work is still used today, for example in ballistics where computers can predict the path of a shell based on Galileo’s work.
Humbled at last by his enemies, the father of modern science wasn’t wholly subdued. His discoveries impacted the world as we see it. Without his sacrifice and motive to fight for what he believed in, we wouldn’t be as advanced as we are today in modern science. Although society advanced by increased knowledge, having more scientific answers, and increased new developments because of the freedom to deviate from established theories, there were some negative effects. Society had lost their innocence and belief in their traditional faith. Galileo’s battle against the Church was worthwhile for generations to come. Without his inventions, theories, or introduction to the concept of theory experimenting, the world of modern science wouldn’t exist as we know it today.
