Changing Roommates
Choosing to leave the comforts of your family and home to go away to college is a life-changing decision. The roommate you get matched up with can make or break your experience. The girl I was matched up with changed my life considerably in a way I didn't like, so I moved out. Moving was the best choice I could have made.
The first sight of my new dorm room was not at all what I expected. There were boxes and papers everywhere. Out from behind a tower of boxes emerged the girl I knew I would be living with for the next few months. The mess never left. Sure, the boxes and papers got put in storage, but soon enough it was clothes, schoolbooks, dishes, or anything else my roommate got her hands on.
Our friendship started slowly, but soon we were talking about our personal lives as if we were the best of friends. Then, she turned into a busybody.
Whenever I would talk on the phone, my roommate would stop what she was doing, sit down, and listen to my conversation. She would often interject her own thoughts, "Oh, I totally agree," or correct something I said, "No, it was only six minutes, not ten." I would ignore the comment and shoot her a look, but my point rarely got across.
There was also the incessant questioning: "Who are you talking to," "Where are you going," and her all time favorite, "What are you doing?" I thought that because my parents were three hundred miles away I wouldn't have to answer to anyone, but this girl was extremely nosy. She was like the Spanish Inquisition! She drove me so crazy I was getting depressed. I am a strong person, and can handle a lot, but this girl was way too much.
When my good friend Lauren told me that one of her roommates was moving (she lived with three other girls), I jumped at the chance to leave. I packed up and never looked back. Although I didn't know much more than the first name of my new roommate, I knew she had to be better than what I was living with.
Erin is the best roommate I could have asked for. She helped me move my stuff in, and didn't mind that it took me two weeks to clean up my mess. Then the fun began.
Often we would just hang out in our common room and listen to "music from our past.
I’d never been in a house like this. It had rooms off of rooms, and in each of them were deep sofas and chairs, woven carpet over polished hard-wood floors, tasteful paintings on the walls. She asked if I was hungry, and she opened the fridge and it was stuffed with food-cold cuts and cheeses, fresh
Gavin Turrell, B. F. (1999). Socioeconomic Determinants of Health:Towards a National Research Program and a Policy and Intervention Agenda. Brisbane: Queensland University of Technology.
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are increasingly becoming a major problem of Public Health around the World. The impact of resources and material deprivation among people and populations has resulted in an increase in mortality rate on a planetary scale. Social determinants of health are defined as the personal, social, economic and the environmental conditions which determines the health status of an individual or population (Gardner, 2013). Today’s society is characterized by inequalities in health, education, income and many other factors which as a result is becoming a burden for Public Health around the world. Research studies have shown that the conditions in which people live and work strongly influenced their health. Individuals with high levels of education and fall within the high income bracket turn to have stable jobs, live in the best neighborhood and have access to quality health care system than individuals who have low education and fall with the low income bracket. This paper is to explain different social determinants of health and how they play ...
Going away to college is a great way for people to meet new friends and experience new things. Usually a setting unlike their home will help them with both of these experiences. While this may not be true for everyone, I believe everyone should try living in an area unlike his or her own. This is what develops a person intellectually and socially.
When that happens we slowly start to drift apart, a former friend is now nothing more than a memory. What is it that makes us stop communicating with each other? In my case it was a lifestyle change. My friend Kalicia and I were so close. We told each other everything. When I found out I was pregnant she was the first person I wanted to tell. At first she was beyond excited. I stayed with her and her family for the first half of my pregnancy. Then I moved to American Falls and everything stated to change. I was eight months pregnant when it all happened. Kalicia had invited me up to her house for my birthday celebration, but being that far along and having to work in the morning all I wanted to do was sleep. The next day, while I was at work she continued to call me multiple times, I knew something was wrong at that point. When I called her back she told me that her mom had passed out and stopped breathing. They had to do CPR on her until the ambulance arrived. I remember my heart dropping because she was like a second mom and I was so excited for her to meet my daughter. As I scrambled trying to get my shift covered so I could leave, I got the call that she had passed away. I remember that day like it was yesterday, the sky was dark, everything seemed grey, and heaven had gained another angel. I had never met such a vibrant and enthusiastic woman. She was understanding of every situation. Soon I felt
Social determinants of health have attracted the attention of governments, policy makers and international health organisations over the last three decades (Hankivsky & Christoffersen 2008). This is because social conditions which people are born in, live and work play an important role in their health outcomes (WHO 2015). According to Kibesh (1200) social determinants drive health disparities, disrupts the human developmental process and undermine the quality of life and opportunities for people and families (ref). Thus, several theories have been developed over the years to provide in-depth understanding of the social determinants of health and to reduce health inequalities (Hankivsky & Christoffersen, 2008). However, there is still significant
The Jewish people and culture have always been an integral part of western society. Many of society’s core values and outlooks derive from those of the Jews (Cahill 3). Every economy involved the Jews. Some of their most common professions were bankers and doctors; even when one neglects to consider the necessity of these professions, one must consider that just by existing they boosted the economy through commerce (Taft 1). The New York Times recorded that in London in 1902 it was “surprising how quickly they improve[d] their condition and beg[a]n to save money” and were building up a tailoring business to rival Germany (“Jewish Immigration Into London”). According to then-former President Taft, Jews in 1919 were given legal equality in every country except Romania and Russia, a...
The social determinants of health, as described by Julia F. Costich, include social/economic environment and, occasionally, physical environment as a result of one’s social/economic status. These determinants are social as they are not biological factors, such as genes, but rather are influenced by social aspects in one’s life, such as class, race, and gender. These social determinants are related to inequality and oppression as, generally, an oppressed group has lower access to health care, proper nutrition, and other biological factors and, as a result, lower health in general.
Sociology studies heavily on the interactions between individuals in different settings. For those who go off to college and decide to live on campus, they are presented a new setting of living with another student who could possibly have a similar background or in contrast a very different background. The factors that can contribute to the background differences are endless. Human interaction is very fascinating and is constantly being observed. Therefore plenty of research has been done on roommate interactions. This paper focuses specifically on the University of California Los Angeles population of freshmen. UCLA has a large amount of diversity and is particularly great for the study of people with different backgrounds coming together and interacting. Both qualitative and quantitative research has been done on this topic, but this paper will focus on qualitative data through interviews. All the participants were thorough with their responses and tried their best to answer as honestly as possible. Overall the data presented varied results with each factor creating a different outcome when it came to the interactions and the closeness of the two roommates. Although the participants gave good insight into their backgrounds through the answering of the interview questions, there is the possibility of many other influences in their lives that could allow for either cohesiveness or non-cohesiveness with roommates that just weren’t examined closely enough. This paper will try to answer how differences in ethnicity or race, socioeconomic background, and other background aspects affect college roommate interactions.
The report set out four possible mechanisms to explain widening socio economic health inequalities. It also found that the main cause of these inequalities was economic inequality. However the report stated that overall health of the population had improved since the welfare state had been introduced. Population information came from the decennial census while death and cause of death information came from death certificates. An individual may be described differently in the ways data sources leading numerator- denominator bias. The report noted that widening inequalities may be explained by the shrinking of social class v. with few people who are completely unskilled, the average health of social class v moved further from social class i. the report suggested that the social class meaning has been changed over the time as some jobs disappear and others emerge. Social selection is when health determines social position. Healthy people are more likely to get promoted whilst the unhealthy people are more likely to lose their jon this may be due to them missing days. Behaviour in individuals in the lower classes indulge in comparatively more health damaging. This report states that poverty causes poor health. The idea of the relationship between class and health is artificial rather than real. The report showed in detail the extent of which ill health and death are unequally distributed among the population of Britain.it also suggests that these inequalities have been widening rather than diminishing since the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948. The report concluded that these inequalities were not mainly attribute to failings in the NHS but they were social inequalities which are influenced by the income, education, housing, diet, employment, and conditions of
There are many relationships within these social determinates of health, most being reciprocal. The culture in a certain community or population determine if someone will have the choice or access to a quality education, which in turn determines one’s socioeconomic status, income, and institutional inequities. Specifically, if a person grows up in a family where education is seen as a priority then they have an increased probability of obtaining a job, therefore positively affecting their income and status. This could also work in a negative path as well depending on someone’s culture.
Finding a roommate in college was a lot more difficult than expected. Knowing someone and creating a strong foundation of friendship is completely different than living with someone. I assume people know about room etiquette such as when you close the door behind you, I’d assume you think that would be an indication for privacy or a non-verbal gesture of privacy and boundaries but for my roommates I guess this miscommunication does not compute in his mind. I did not think this would come to an interpersonal conflict between myself and my roommate.
If you ask anyone what home means to them more than likely you’ll get several different opinions. In my case home has never been a specific place it’s always been wherever my mom was! My Mother and I have been moving from place to place ever since I could remember.
She doesn’t know this, but she changed my life. She was there for me when it seemed like no one else was. When most of my friends were dissolving around me and I just didn’t feel like I could do anything right, she was there, and she made everything seem okay. It didn’t matter that I was inevitably going to graduate with a GPA a tenth of a point lower than I wanted, or that my director told me that he was disappointed in me because I just didn’t seem focused lately, or that my other friends just weren’t talking to me anymore. It didn’t matter because she was there and she made me feel safe. She’s my best friend, and I love her and admire her for so many different reasons.
As I was always told, it is better to live on your own then it is with a roommate. These are reasons why.one. When you are living, alone you have the responsibility to take care of everything and not have to worry about other people getting in your way. Living on your own offers a great deal of freedom to act how you want and live the way you want. If you want to lie on the couch for days on end, watching there is no one there to complain about your behavior. You can listen to your music as loud as you can want or any kind of music for that matter because you do not have anyone nagging about what you are doing.
