Fashion is a controversial issue in society nowadays. We live in a consumerism advanced era in which whether following fashion trends or not has become a debatable point. Many people believe that it is important to follow fashion trends. For example, Lord Chesterfield once said, “If you are not in fashion, you are nobody.” The question is why fashion should be an essential matter of concern to all of us. As far as I am concerned, each person should be able to decide if one wants to follow a trend or not. Firstly, I agree that the people who follow the trends create an image about themselves which does not reflect their character because they do not make their own decisions on what to wear. One pays a large amount of money to buy clothes which sometimes does not suit her/him. It is claimed that clothes and accessories that are in trend are generally the most costly. Not to mention the fact that they go out of fashion very quickly. Furthermore, the current vogue for stylish objects has brought social discrimination, especially among the young generation. It is unfair to the poor, who cannot afford the latest products, being discriminated on the grounds of class or money. However, it is said that fashion helps people to decide how to dress. It can provide them some useful advice about what to wear in order to create a good impression. What is more, dressing fashionably increases self-confidence because it causes to be trendier and to receive nice comments. It is generally believed that the ones who wear fashionable clothes tend to feel more confident and self-assured. All things considered, I firmly believe that people devoted to fashion clothing could earn self-esteem and make them more confident. Nevertheless, it is significant to be original and capable of deciding what to wear by ourselves instead of following the trends without consider our personality.
