Recommended: How do the gods contribute to the development of the plot in the odyssey

Fate and free will, two subjects that go hand in hand in the Odyssey. The Odyssey is filled with examples of both fate and free will. I believe the gods of the Odyssey interfere with the lives of humans, but don’t control their lives completely. I also believe that humans in the Odyssey have some control over their lives, but do they? The Odyssey has a lot of god’s but Odysseus gets the wrath of Poseidon because he punctures Poseidon’s son’s eye. After that day Odysseus’ life is ruined for 20 years trying to get back to his homeland of Ithaca. “(Zeus:) “For his sake Poseidon, shaker of the earth, although he does not kill Odysseus, yet drives him back from the land of his fathers. But come, let all of us who are here work out his homecoming …show more content…

“(Zeus): 'Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given […].' (1.32-34)” This quote proves that the people of the Odyssey are in some control over their lives because their actions decide what will happen to them in the future. So, when the humans in the Odyssey mess up, the gods see it as their job to punish them. The people in the Odyssey have control over their lives. “(Nestor:) 'The will of the everlasting gods is not turned suddenly.' (3.147)” I interpret this quote as saying that the gods watch over the lives of humans but don’t interfere until the humans have messed up. The people in the Odyssey have control over their lives. They can make their own decisions in life but ultimately the gods can change their plans, if they don’t go according to their plan. In summary, the Odyssey has instances of fate and free will so people in their time could make their own decisions but the gods could change their lives. In the life of Odysseus he had to spend twenty years trying to get back to his family. In this way the gods controlled his life but he still got to make decisions of attitude which in my opinion is very
