There are many different sectors or levels in the fashion industry including Haute Couture, Prêt-à-Porter and High Street. The term "haute couture" is French. Haute means "high" or "elegant." Couture literally means "sewing," but has come to indicate the business of designing, creating, and selling custom-made, high fashion women's clothes. There are strict regulations to be a part of an Haute Couture House. All designers must belong to the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture in Paris which hosts about 18 members including Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and Valentino. Haute Couture designers must present their collections twice a year. These collections are only shown in Paris. Haute Couture designs are made from scratch and are specifically made to suit the customers measurements. Usually these designs can take anything from 100-400 hours to make and can cost well up tp $100,000. (Infoplease.com, 2014)

For the purposes of this paper we will be discussing the boycott effects on Abercrombie & Fitch; a U.S based clothing company. At first we will analyse the concept of boycotting international companies to understand the different choices boycotters make when targeting the guilty company. We will look at the history of the company; it’s beginnings, evolution of concept, failures and successes. An important part of this paper will be assessing the main factors and reasons that led to the boycott. We are going to be analysing the effects of the boycott keeping in mind that although the reasons behind the controversial boycott have taken place a couple of years ago, only in 2013 has the boycott been initiated by several different parties involved. To be able to understand what triggered the boycott to begin we are going to try to understand how it all came about to begin with. There are several concerned parties in the boycott and each have their own agenda and reasoning to boycott the company. To give a more thorough analysis of the initiators of this particular boycott their relation to one another will be discussed in the paper. Another important part of the boycott is the different types of effects that these boycotters have on the company. We will closely study the reasons, the effects, the affected parties, and the path for damage control and reconciliation chosen by Abercrombie & Fitch as well as its results both the negative and the positive. Finally we will discuss the effectiveness of the boycott on the Abercrombie’s internationalization, market strategy, competitiveness, and market activities.
Givenchy’s love for fashion grew when at the age of ten he attended the Pavillon d’ Elegance Paris Exposition. Once looking through Vogue magazine, he was inspired by Balenciaga men’s wear. He wanted to be a couturier and attended Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, to start a formal education in fashion. His designing inspirations came from Elsa Schiaparelli and Madam Gres’s work. His experience also came from working at the House of Piguet in Paris; this salon was known for its dramatic yet simple style and after, at the House of Lelong that was known for their high quality clothing. Those positions gave him knowledge on how to work with couture customers and gave him an opportunity to build strong relationships with them (Press, 2002).

French fashion authority was not disputed until the late twentieth century when Italy emerged as a major fashion hub (DeJean, 80). People would wait for children dressed in expensive clothing to walk by and then they would kidnap them and steal their clothes to sell for money (DeJean, 39). Haute Couture Haute Couture is the French term for high fashion, and it relates to the dressmaking, sewing, or needlework of a garment. In 1886, Charles Frédéric Worth founded an association of couture houses dedicated to regulate and protect the work of Parisian couturiers, and it later evolved to La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. MacKenzie. The term Haute Couture is protected by law in which one must adhere to specific criteria’s stated by the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture in order to be categorized under its name. The criteria to be categorized as Haute Couture is a minimum of fifteen people employed at the house, producing one-of-a-kind garments of the highest craftsmanship and quality, as well as it has to be presented to the press in Paris each season.
People’s opinions differ greatly on what vintage fashion is. Rhodes (2008, pg. 6-8) suggests that “vintage fashion is a magical harvest of wearable art. It’s a wine from past seasons that must be dipped into, sampled and tasted.” Taylor (2013, p. 8) also suggests that vintage is a “garment that possesses age, beauty and great design.” I agree with these statements and believe that there is a story behind every vintage garment. Some say that vintage is another word for old fashioned, Rhodes suggests that vintage clothes have had an adventure and have survived the toil of time (2013).

It is quite evident as you walk around the streets of almost any city or town in America that the line between what was once considered the black style of dress and the white styles has become less and less evident. This is especially true with the younger kids in junior high and high school. The baggy pants and shirts with labels and bright colors that were once reserved for the inner city black and Latino kids, are now being worn by whites in wealthy suburban neighborhoods.
In post-war Britain, the role of women was beginning to change from the social normality. In this era, it was suddenly expected of women to do the jobs their husband was unable to do, as they were out in war. Their roles in society shifted from housewife and domestic caregiver, to female factory worker. This proved somewhat positive as women discovered their strength and intelligence that had before been hidden under their oppression. It is in this era, fashion photography aimed to explore the independence and business side of a woman, while maintaining her femininity. To discuss the representation of women in a post-war society, I will specifically look at the works of Norman Parkinson, notably the image titled The Art of Travel.
Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets— a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles— it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. It is without doubt, high fashion and its design is an art.
