Long before stories were recorded on paper they were told through word of mouth. As the story was shared, it also changed. Storytellers could make any changes to the story that they saw fit without being punished. This same concept holds true with fan fiction. Fan fiction is a story written by a fan of a book, movie, comic, or television show depicting a mixture of characters, plotlines and settings that appear in the original work. Like folklore, fan fiction follows a basic storyline with concrete elements while reflecting the beliefs of the person telling the story (Schaffner 616). While the two share many similarities such as strong educational implications, the difference between fan fiction and its ancient predecessor lies in the medium …show more content…
Bestselling author E. L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey was originally a Twilight fan fiction. Meg Cabot began writing Star Wars fan fiction when she was eleven and Cassandra Clare was a popular Harry Potter fan writer (Alter). Some other authors have received acclaim for their books that are based off novel’s whose copyrights have expired. The novel March by Geraldine Brooks follows a character in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and won a Pulitzer Prize in 2006. The Broadway musical Wicked was adapted from the book of the same name written by Gregory Maguire that takes place in the same world as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Alter). The dream of many fan fiction writers is to reach a point where people write fan fiction based on something that they created (Schaffner 617), and reaching that level of success has been …show more content…
In 2009, Tracy Kell and a few of her coworkers at Chestatee Middle School in Georgia made lesson plans revolving around fan fiction. During the unit, students read, wrote, published and reviewed stories written by classmates and strangers. This project was a success and it inspired many students to become more interested in writing (Kell 32-35). While this lesson on fan fiction was intentional and structured, many literature teachers assign fan fiction projects without realizing it. Some teachers will have students write alternative endings for novel that they read in class or have students decide what certain characters will be doing five or ten years after the novel ends. If teachers are using fan fiction as part of their curriculum, what is the problem with writing
Authors have the ability justify the worst actions. Authors have a way of romanticizing certain situations in order to convey a specific message. A good author has power to influence the reader into believing whatever it is the author wants. When it comes to the story of Hannah Dustan, authors such as John Greenleaf Whittier have romanticized her captivity story along with the actions she took throughout her journey.
In his article “Star Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten,” Henry Jenkins addresses the function of fandoms, more specifically the writing of fan-fiction, and further in the context of the Star Trek fandom. He claims that fans are “textual poachers” who take pieces of the original text that they deem as worthy, and rework, or improve areas that they find problematic or contradictory to the overall purpose of the piece. This “poaching” that is transformed works into fan-fiction are heavily written by females, at least in the Star Trek fandom. Jenkins states that this is due to the fact that women have a rather limited and highly stereotyped portrayal in science fiction. Thus, in writing fan-fiction, women are able to express themselves and their own

This also gives more life to the story in the way of showing a more fantasied version of the story than what the reader might have in his/her head.
Flash fiction is a type of literature known to have typically around 1,000 words. Limiting a story to 1,000 has some advantages and disadvantages. It allows for a quick and simple read; some are only a couple sentences long. Although they are all considered flash fiction, to be a good piece of literature a story needs to have depth, clarity and appeal. Providing all three elements in 1,000 words can be tricky but when done right they create a moving story. “The Dead Boy At Your Window” by Bruce Holland Rogers is an example of a good piece of flash fiction literature because it has depth, clarity and appeal as shown through the transfixing story of grief and loss.
Henry Bial states that a fan fiction allows an individual to “explore and expand upon the biblical narrative in some interesting ways” (page 14). Not only they can change ideas in the story but the structure, plot, or character will remain true to the original idea. This strategy can be used to change a scene or plot to accommodate the audience, or problems. I certainly like this take on his argument regarding the fan fiction and Ben -Hur. Ben Hur is this popular theater performance based on Lew Wallace novel thanks to the creative changes on it. When the play was beginning, people were criticizing harshly about how no one can Jesus because no one get capture his essence. This was solved by using a beam of light to represent him. It was a big change compared to the originally story but it still captured the meaning of the scene. The creativity used to achieve a bible to staging it is incredible as it motivate people to not only stay loyal to the original content but to take a new form of it as well.
The concept of what is considered free produced fan content and who owns it and what are the benefits and benefactors of the content being produced? Examples of this would be when fans of copyrighted material interpret it by making revisions and remixing the content and coming up with something new based off an original. This should not be considered stealing because both the originator and the fan are in mutual gain on either end of the spectrum. There is no specific law to date that details what is considered fair use of content and is punishable so fans may be allowed to interpret and produce content freely.
Fanfiction is regarded as a way to motivate children to read or learn, or as a forgery, involving the theft of other people’s work. Nevertheless, fanfcition is misapprehended by many as plagiarism. It is depicted as the prohibited borrowing of characters and literary elements to one’s own personal benefit. According to the partisans of that misconception, fanfcition is a contraband. It is illegal to use other people’s creations to modify them. Fanfiction wirters are regarded as forgers, who only seek reputation, publication and acknowledgement, instead of devoted writers who aim at sharing their undeniable talent and literary dedication. By expanding the literary world, cultivating joy among readers, globalizing writing, and offering individual opportunities of getting published, fanfiction constitutes an eminent subgenre of literature, an act of passion sinfully ridiculed by many as an
It tells a story that doesn’t exist in reality. It can be clearly seen through the character or the setting of the story. Take an example, a popular novel by J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a story of a young boy who is happened to have a deep bond with the most evil wizard in the history, Lord Voldemort. His fate then takes him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he starts his journey as a wizard. Hogwarts is located in an unidentified world where the witches and wizards live. Although most of the time, the setting takes a place in Hogwarts, there is a time where Harry needs to come back to the world of ordinary human or the muggles
Creators have creative freedom and can alter or shape a persons opinion with their works.
As a genre of writing, fan fiction is “writing, whether official or unofficial, paid or unpaid, which makes use of an accepted canon of characters, settings, and plots generated by another writer or writers “(Pugh, 2005, p. 25). There are entire websites where participants can publish their writing connected with pop culture literature such as the young adult literature series The Hunger Games and The Host. The Internet has made it possible for frequent, instantaneous, and ongoing interaction among participants that share these interests (Banet-Weiser, et al, 2014). Fan fiction writing allows adolescent writers to utilize their favorite stories, plots and characters as the basis for creative writing and as a means to explore characters, issues, and themes that are of interest or concern to them. Tosenberger (2014), divides the genre into two categories which she calls affirmative and transformational fandom. Affirmative fan fiction writing is closely connected to the original material, and is heavily contextual, searching for answers and authors’ or producers’ true purposes in creating the source work. Transformational fan fiction writing takes the source materials and manipulates, corrects, or changes it according to the fan’s purposes, for creativity and fun or to reflect areas that the fan may feel
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain has many amazing elements within its story but, these elements were not the first time it was used. Many other stories has used these elements before. Old stories like Robin Hood, Prometheus, and Cinderella are only some of the stories in which they used the elements before. Modern fiction is extremely similar to older works such as myths, traditional stories, and religious works based as characterization, theme, and plot.
Perry explains that the authors who are science fiction, horror and fantasy writers explain the impact of these fields in the current development of video games. They are many times that game producers are influenced by mythology while making their games. Mythology is becoming a big factor in making good video games. The trends suggest that the future success of video games will be determined more by the type of stories and details present in the video games than by the graphics or other factors that were believed to be more important than the myths present in these stories. So if these games use interesting and mythological stories that affect it the game has a chance of selling
Speculative fiction books can be described as books that allow readers to enter worlds of pure imagination. It is also referred to as nonrealistic fiction and includes fantasy, horror, and science fiction. Many of these types of books include futuristic settings and ideas. Speculative fiction books also often include imaginative worlds and possibilities that draw a reader away from the real world. It is for this reason that speculative fiction has become an incredibly popular genre and young adults are often drawn towards it.
