Reconstruction took place after the Civil War to rebuild what we know today as the United States of America. Amendments that gave African Americans the right to voting were established during reconstruction. Reconstruction also caused mass groups like the KKK to form and fight the changes reconstruction had to offer. Although there were many successes that came from reconstruction, there were also many failures. High taxes in the south would be a failure in the reconstruction. The Civil war really effected the south, because most of the war was took place on southern soil. As the North advanced into the south, crops were burned, mills were destroyed, and houses were burned down. Without labor that the slaves provided, the south took a very long time to get back on its feet. This also made southerners fear the changes that would take place, following the Civil War. Taxes were raised to help rebuild the south. The Ku Klux Klan also formed during reconstruction. The Ku Klux Klan was a group of people who disagreed with the changes being made and the rights that were being given to African-Americans, who they wanted as slaves. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery. The fourteenth amendment granted citizenship to anyone born or naturalized in the United States, which included former slaves who had just been freed from the Civil War. The fifteenth amendment gave African-American men the right to vote by declaring that the "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude."
