Abstract
Systematic Developmental Supervision is an excellent way for a supervisor and supervisee to work together to promote the personal growth of the supervisee within the family-based counseling profession. It allows the supervisee to rely on the supervisor in times of need, but also allows the supervisee to experience the profession and later freedom, less anxiety, and a development of self-confidence within the profession.

SDS proposes three levels of family counselor development: Beginning Family Counselor, Intermediate Family Counselor, and Experienced Family Counselor. Beginning family counselors are mostly students within practicums and internship that experience high levels of anxiety and constantly look to supervisors for advice and structure (Carlson and Lambie, 2012). Intermediate family counselors are usually new graduates looking to pursue their careers in the profession. They tend to experience lower levels of anxiety and are still somewhat dependent on the supervisor as they search for freedom and have a decrease in a need for the advice of a supervisor (Carlson and Lambie, 2012). Experienced family counselors are counselors who have gained their experience in the profession, and have little to no anxiety as they have developed a self-confidence within the field. He is in the process of counseling a couple who are having issues based on infidelity. James is having an issue with the husband of the couple because he is always questioning the techniques that he is wanting to try. James finds himself looking to be liked by the husband. James realizes that this is becoming an issue as he talks to his supervisor and they figure out that this is due to his relationship with his father. James and the supervisor have realized and diagnosed an issue in his counseling. At this point, an intervention needs to be made. Since James seems to be in the level of intermediate family counselor, even as a graduate student, the supervisor’s role is to have him construct a genogram of family origin (which was already in place) and allow reflection, awareness, and insight (which was done). James and his supervisor also realize that their comfortableness within their relationship may also have caused some of the issue. The relationship between James and his supervisor, along with James and his client, have been compromised. First, the supervisor needs to take on a strict supervisor role so that he can better promote the personal growth of James within the profession and help his clients. After this has been achieved, James will have a better chance at being able to grow and help his clients as he will have to do the same with the husband of the couple he is counseling.
I have been a supervisor over the years and have gained some experience however I may not be aware of most of the things that are important to the supervisee who needs to learn a lot for me in the clinical setting. Therefore my disposition should be that of a humble supervisor to allow them reach me with their problems and answer some of their questions. I need to give the supervisee the opportunity to teach me as well. I will not feel that I am above learning from them. i should also encourage my staff to allow supervisee speak their mind and bring to bear what they have learnt in class that is not reflected in my hospital this will afford us the needed change we
My respect and solid working relationship with my supervisor allowed me to discuss any vicarious trauma I may have been experiencing. These bi-weekly sessions allowed me to process my strong feeling of sadness I felt for Susan as she lived among piles of possessions and a completely unusable and unsanitary kitchen. Supervision allowed me to express my thoughts of frustration during times of setbacks and to celebrate as accomplishments were made. Furthermore, through my supportive relationship with my supervisor I was able to learn more about myself and develop deeper therapeutic skills. I believe good supervision is important. Randall L. Astramovich and J. Kelly Coker define counseling program evaluation along with Loesch (2001) in that it is the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery through careful and systematic examination of program component, methodologies, and outcomes. Astramovich, et al. feel that counseling program evaluations precedes accountability and believe counselor’s distancing from evaluation is inherited from the lack of practical program evaluation models that are available to them. Once again in agreeance with Loesch ( 2001) it was recognized that counselors experienced confusion between program evaluations and accountability that prevented many from participating in ongoing program evaluations
The developmental model, summarized in an article by Stoltenberg (2005), summarizes a supervision approach that uses developmental framework in clinical supervision. The author, Stolenberg (2005) and Ursula Delworth created a developmental model titled Integrated Developmental Model of supervision (IDM). IDM provided specific details about the changes in the supervisee throughout their time in clinical supervision. It also provided specific details on the types of supervision environments and supervisor intervention for each level of development (Stoltenberg, 2005).
This paper will provide a brief historical view of the counseling profession. In addition, it will focus on the importance of the philosophies of wellness, resilience, and prevention. Furthermore, it will identify the preferred counseling specialization and give a concise detail of how the profession was formed. Moreover, it will also discuss another counseling specialization that will go hand in hand with the preferred counseling specialization analyzing the case of a 12 year old female name Ashley. Hence, a brief discussion of the roles and functions of each professional will be given in details on how it would benefit Ashley and her family. Lastly, I will provide a brief example of how we would work as a team so that the end result will benefit each member of the family.
Nieter et al. (2013) looked at PCIT with community families and whether the behaviors of the children changed after the 12 sessions. The sample of 27 families was in low socioeconomic statuses, and the children were between 2-8 years of age. Only 17 of these families completed the entire treatment. The families that were in the PCIT program exemplified that the parents and/or caregivers gained skills to help their children’s behavior. The caregivers also in the experimental (PCIT) group believed that their children’s behavior improved by the end of treatment and the parents’ stress level decreased as well. Not only did the children’s behavior improve, but the parents also felt like they did not exhibit inappropriate behaviors (e.g. critical statements) as much and used more prosocial behaviors. The study’s results also may show that the fact that the treatment was in a group setting may have been beneficial, because it provides a support system, and they are able to problem solve together. Even after treatment ended, the parents reported that they kept in contact, creating a strong community. However, on the other hand, the problem with the group setting was the because there were so many groups, each caregiver only received 10-15 minutes of coaching which is shorter than the individual sessions. The Family-Centered approach to care is important to the delivery of behavioral health services for children and adolescents because it involves the families in their natural environments and allows the families to make decisions about their care. It promotes home and community based care by creating an equal partnership with the family to ensure optimal delivery of care at all levels (Brewer, McPherson, Magrab, & Hutchins, 1989). For children with special health care needs, such as mental or developmental disorders, coordinating care between all services and people can help to introduce flexible and reasonable ways of providing the maximum amount of care to children and families (Brewer, McPherson, Magrab, & Hutchins, 1989).

Counselor A is neutral with both Tom and Virginia. A professional response was provided rather than a personal one to both parties. The counselor view was from a positive perspective. The counselor was professional in giving feedbacks pertain to his or her potential clients. The therapist present a realistic approach based on the couple situation and facts. The therapist realistic approach will help the couple view their situation from a different perspective so that they can improve their relationship. Looking at things from the therapist point of view this method is intended to teach specific tools and skills to Virginia and Tom so that they can deepen their friendship and intimacy in their relationship. Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. Others may have had a bad experience with counseling and concluded that it can be done better. People do not think of this work so much as a job, or even as a career. More typically, a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one toward the counseling profession” (An invitation to). .
One major reason family support is recognized is for the numerous and effective support it provides to individual and their families. Also, it contributes to the development and well-being of children, their parents and/or caregivers and the general community. Family support has grown from an individual perspective to family perspectives in providing services. The FRP provided twelve guidelines for providing accurate and effective services to clients and their families that will encourage inclusiveness in all areas. These guiding principles are recognized and practice daily in the programs provided by the Jane and Finch community and family center.
It was thought that if a social worker was engaging in the life and struggles of a client, it needed to be ensured through supervision that the personal life of the worker did not influence their interactions. Within the individual psychology relationship the counselor has several roles that they hold. The counselor establishes an egalitarian relationship, working as teachers in their relationships. They model, teach, and assess areas of the client’s life such as how Ana grew up the middle child and her ways of responding and functioning. The counselor’s role is also to direct and encourage Ana, being warm and human, and admitting their own mistakes when necessary (Gladding, 2005; Murdock, 2013).
Family counseling is an option for counselors to partake in, but there are some considerations to contemplate before delving into this work. Individual and family therapy each have their unique qualities. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of using family therapy to address concerns as well as the challenges of working with an entire family to gain more insight will help you become a qualified counselor. We will explore not only the experience needed to become a family therapist, but also the role the counselor will play in the therapy.
