In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, one must read the text closely to track the shifting motivations and loyalties of each character as the play progresses. An important factor that must be kept in mind while reading is the degree of loyalty, in other words, the degree to which characters act out of a motivation to help others. Throughout the play, each character's current degree of loyalty to others is clearly exhibited by words or behavior – this holds true for the characters of Brutus, Cassius, Antony, Portia, and Calpurnia. The focus on loyalty is critical because before the play ends an even-handed justice is meted out to a number of people who fail to live up to an expected standard of loyalty to others.
Loyalty is a hard quality to find in a friend, so once loyalty is found that friend is usually in it for life. Faraway friends are the ones we find ourselves turning to in our darkest hour of need and the ones that we would step into battle with. Marion Winik perfectly explains the importance
Loyalty isn't grey. It's black and white. You're either loyal completely, or not loyal at all ~ SHARNAY, attributed, A-Thousand-Words. Loyalty Cannot be grey, it has to be black and white as for grey means that One can not be loyal and not loyal and as for black and white means you're either loyal till you die or you disloyal. Julius Caesar Was a noble man, a man who worked hard for his country, a man who was well respected and admired by the community. Since all of his glories and triumphs as emperor lead Rome to become a powerhouse of that century, He was admired.Julius Caesar was even respected and loved from the same people who planned his cruel murder, But why would the conspirators who loved and respected Julius
His word choice and repetition eventually makes the people lean on his side. He makes it clear that the conspirators have killed Caesar and that they have betrayed him by doing so. The sad thing about betrayal is that it’s never caused by the ones you hate or dislike but by the ones you love and adore. Caesar thought of all of them as friends never believing that any of them would want to kill him. He never thought that the friendship between he and Brutus would end the way it did. Antony stresses how friendships and emotional connections are important. Throughout the play he makes it clear that a friend betraying you is worse than any pain you can even imagine. When Caesar takes that blow from Brutus the tears that fell were because of betrayal. Using rhetorical devices and pathos in his speech really made the people change their mind about whose side to take and what to
Hinton, Tennyson, and Shakespeare, use honor in their texts, they also include Loyalty. Loyalty and Honor are different things; honor is a high respect of something and loyalty is a strong feeling of support. During The Outsiders, Pony is loyal to Johnny, because Pony went to the church with Johnny. Also during the rumble in the novel, Dally fights for Johnny. During the rumble Dally dies, when Dally pases away, he basically died for Johhny. Tennyson, author of “Charge of the Light Brigade”, shows loyalty in many ways during this poem. The captain of the british soldiers knew he messed up with his order. Since the british only had swords and horses, and the russians had bombs, the british knew they were going to lose. In stanza 2, it says “theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do or die”. That saying means the soldiers knew they were going to die, but they were going to die of courage, and be known as soldiers who died for their country/being loyal to their country. During Much Ado About Nothing Shakespeare includes a lot of loyalty. For example, Beatrice, Hero’s cousin, stayed loyal to Hero, because they are family. During Act 4 scene 1 everyone thought Hero was a stale because Claudio said she cheated on him, but Beatrice believed Hero, when she said she was not a cheater. Beatrice stayed by her side the whole time, and tried her best to prove Hero was not a stale. Another example of loyalty would also be when Beatrice tells
Loyalty is one of the only things that can hold the bonds of family and friends.
Cassius, the first to start the conspiracy against Caesar, illustrates his betrayal to Caesar by convincing the future conspirators to stand on his side, such as Casca and Cinna, “Now know you, Casca, I have moved already some certain of the noblest-minded Romans to undergo, with me, an enterprise of honourable dangerous consequence;”. After Cassius gathered all the conspirators he managed to convince to get together, it is suggested to invite Brutus to join, “If you could but win the noble Brutus to our party---”. Cassius then successfully persuades Brutus to join by sending an anonymous letter to Brutus’ house. Another betrayal that occurred in the play was through Antony. After Caesar’s death, Antony returns to the Capitol, and shakes hands with the conspirators, “Let each man render me this bloody hand.”, showing that he stands on their side. However, once Caesar’s funeral is over and he succeeds in turning the citizens against the conspirators, he goes to war against Brutus and Cassius who fled Rome, “I heard him say, Brutus and Cassius are rid like madmen through the gates of Rome.”. The last evidence of betrayal is between Octavius, Antony, and Lepidus. It is seen that they are allies, but after Lepidus is sent to run an errand, Antony explains how he doesn’t trust him, “This is a slight unmeritable
The majority of people experience betrayal in their lives. Betrayal can mean to be disloyal or unfaithful. The betrayal of a friend family member or loved one is malicious and can be painful. Examples of betrayal are being cheated on or lied to. The playwright, actor and poet William Shakespeare exemplifies betrayal in one of his most famous plays The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. Shakespeare depicts the play in ancient Rome after the defeat of pompey and his sons. Shakespeare exhibits the ultimate betrayal by revealing that Brutus joins a conspiracy to murder Caesar. The writer portrays Brutus as a Roman politician who was once a friend of caesar, while Caesar is portrayed as a Roman general who was asked to be the ruler of rome. Shakespeare depicts the the conspirators to be plotting to kill caesar for they do not see him fit to rule. They succeed in their plan, many were happy about the death of Caesar but not Mark Antony. Mark antony was a friend of Caesar who declared a speech at his funeral attempting to get the Roman audience’s attention. Therefore in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, playwright William Shakespeare uses Mark Antony’s speech to persuade the Roman audience against the conspirators by using
Loyalty and honor, those two things may seem similar but often in life they can create many inner conflicts and can get in the way for the greater good of others. In William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Shakespeare willfully constructs a character by the name of Brutus who is often faced with the serious dilemma of whether to be loyal to a long time friend or honor his great country of Rome by getting rid of his long time friend. He makes the choice of honor for the greater good of his beloved country. His leadership, restraint and honor make him a very important commodity.
To me loyalty mean staying by someones side whether they are right or wrong; being able to tell them when they're wrong and helping them through it. It is a strong feeling that is hard to get rid of.
Loyalty to something or somebody is considered to be honorable and in the play, Romeo and Juliet, there are different types of loyalty that are portrayed, but the one that comes up most often is the case of extreme loyalty.
Another example of loyalty is the scene where Nag is about to attack teddy's dad but Rikki saves him ( p28). " I will kill the big mans and his wife, and the child if I can" that
One should be loyal if he/she truly believes that it’s worth it. Other times, one should probably not be. Take Hitler for example. Should there had been more people who were loyal to him? Most would believe that no one should have been loyal to him, since he slaughtered the Jewish. Others, on the other hand, may have thought differently. In a Hitler situation, it was probably
