What do you think of when you picture something bad for you? Most people would picture something like smoking, unhealthy eating, or lack of exercise. But there is something that you probably didn’t think about, and you do it week, after week, after week. It’s called homework, and its effects are far more destructive than you may imagine. This is why City Academy should get rid of homework. Homework is actually responsible for a wide variety of problems, ranging from increased stress and difficulty with time management, to decreasing student performance, and even causing negative health effects. This, unfortunately, is almost a complete lie. It is true that homework can provide some academic advantages, however these benefits almost only affect those in upper high school grades 10 through 12. And to make things worse, these benefits are only gained with moderate to light amounts of homework, so most of these students never reap the benefits of homework. This is because they are simply given way too much. Most high school students receive between 90 minutes and two hours of homework per night, and some students up to three hours. This is far too much to provide any academic boost, and in fact it is actually detrimental to student performance. According to studies by Australian researchers, kids who receive homework often have marginally lower test scores than those who have less or no homework. This trend is not only seen with modern data but has also been seen in past studies. This combined with the other effects of homework make homework not only unnecessary and pointless, but harmful as
“The typical student, even in high school does not spend more than an hour per day on homework” (Loveless NP). However, there is an ongoing dispute between critics on whether a lot of homework has more negative effects than positive effects, and vice versa. Homework is the greatest tool for student success, whether they realize it or not, homework is the key to success, it may not be to fun, but it has many positive effects. Homework improves academic success, it develops non-school skills, and it helps involve parents.
Healthline.com has said that “Students in high achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society.” Being sick of school is one thing, but when school is making you sick because of the homework you have now is bad. Elementary kids having physical problems just from homework can eventually lead to other possible problems down the road. These problems include substance abuse, becoming a high school dropout, and possibly death by suicide. So why risk a student’s life for a few homework
School is infamous for the interaction between students and the dreadful word that is hard to swallow. Easily, the word can be typed. Homework. Homework is the heavy that weights on any kid from kindergarten to a young adult finishing college. There are hundreds of reasons why homework should or should not be assigned. There are teachers who would be on both of those ends. It appears tedious and sometimes has no intention of teaching or learning that needs to be involved. It is another numerical value that measures a human being. It is added to the list of numbers that defines nearly every person who has been evaluated. This list contains age, weight, grade point average, etc. Because of this list, teachers, parents, people who are concerned about the situation examine whether homework is
Homework, it’s a waste of time, money, paper and trees. Some people don’t even do the homework or they just copy it off of others the day it’s due so, they didn’t really learn much at all. In addition, if we didn’t do the homework, we may have had a doctor’s appointment or something important we had to do.
Doing too much homework is not help students to become scholars. However, too little homework will make the students fall behind their peers. Some people have found a good amount of homework so that the students would become better at schools and home. Still, many people think that homework isn’t helpful. Do you think schools should get rid of homework?
4: Clearly, high schoolers should not get homework because it of the issues it causes. 5: One issue it causes is a great deal of stress. Less than 1% of students said homework was not a stressor and 56% of students said homework was the main source of stress. As a teenager, you are already dealing with many stressful things in life, so adding homework on top of that as a main stress point causes too much stress, resulting in poorer health. Which leads me to my next point.
The fact that the amount of homework has risen 3 or 4 times over the past decades shows that homework isn’t brain-stimulating, but exhausting. With this in mind, we can evaluate that longer hours also lead to bad grades, a reduction in self confidence, weakened social skills, and other qualities of life (CNN). These serious allegations all show that homework is not beneficial, but in fact,
Homework should be banned from schools because Homework can negatively affect kids health. One piece of evidence is eductionalreaserchers Robert Marzano and Debra Pickering state that homework can be very bad for students mentally and physically. It is bad because kids get too much of it and kids start to worry and get scared that there teacher will be disappointed in them. Another reason why homework can negatively affect students health is homework can give kids sleep deprivation. My evidence to support this is research proves that kids can get sleep deprivation by staying up to late doing homework. My last reason is homework can cause suicidal thoughts. One piece of evidence is a lot of kids are having suicidal thoughts because of way too much homework, according to Teens, stress, and suicide, homework can also cause kids to have suicidal thoughts by stress and they think that homework is way to hard. Therefor homework should be banned from schools all around.
Homework is a problem for students who attend schools in Anderson School District Five. Ninety percent of students at TL Hanna have homework on a daily basis, and ninety-three percent of the people who have homework get stressed out by their work.(Williams) Often times I have so much homework, and it causes me to have mental breakdowns. They get so bad that my mom tells me to go to bed and to not worry about the homework. I do not have mental breakdowns regularly, so I know homework must be the main cause of them for me. Students should not be so stressed from homework that it causes issues with their mental health.
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
It is said that homework really did its job over the years. Homework does a lot to children including their improvement in their study habits, the attitude that they have at school and outside of it, gaining independent problem-solving skills and many more. (Johnson, 2016) The debate about homework should be based on the students if they need to find a solution about it.
In all school districts homework should be banned because it causes stress to students. For many of the students "They're sacrificing a decent night's sleep, exercise, family time, a social life, and spare moments to simply read, invent, dream, or explore—everything that's essential to a growing mind. Headaches, stomach aches, sleeplessness, and depression rates among teens are soaring” ( "Homework: Is homework beneficial to students?"). This quote states that kids are giving up a lot of important things just in order to complete their homework for school. Kids are having to complete so many things, it is causing them to rush which leads to stress, and things that could possible stop your brain from growing into
Dr. Michael Nagel, an associate professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says homework has no scientific benefit and that it could even be bad for a student’s brain. “The adult brain does not fully mature until the third decade of life (a person’s thirty’s) and too much stimulation could cause unnecessary stress on a student.” An analysis conducted by Pearson showed that the number of hours spent on homework was between ten and sixty-five hours a week, with females scoring higher on the hours of homework, stres...
Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that but according to Donyall Dickey, principle at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college. It also helps us to remember the materials that were taught in class. Another reason homework can be beneficial is the fact that it can prepare us for tests and the dreadful pop-quiz that a teacher may randomly give us. This fact was proven, according to a 2006 study by Harris Cooper, director of Duke University’s Program in education, in the article “Homework or Not? That is the (Research) Question”. The studies instituted that “students who had homework performed better on class tests compared to those who did not” (DeNisco). Another compelling thing about homework, are the qualities a skills th...
