Ethical Concerns of Artificial Intelligence
What are the ethics of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)? Many people see different sides regarding this issue. One side sees is that A.I. will be the downfall of humanity, while the other sees an upgrade for humanity. However, these are merely situations that are can be unethical. People have been discussing about this topic a lot and some ethical concerns that will be humanoid robots and robots taking over the work industry. Ethics is according to Britannica (2015) is the “discipline concerned with what is morally good and bad, right and wrong.” This paper examines some of the ethical issues and sides that is happening because of (A.I.)

The robots are taking over!!! This is the idea that Kevin Kelly stresses and elaborates on in his article “Better than Human:Why Robots Will-and must-Take Our Jobs”. The article focuses on automation in the workplace and how most of the jobs that are currently done by humans will be taken over by robots in the future. Kelly believes that this is inevitable and that it is a positive thing. While I believe that most of our jobs will be taken over in the future, I do not think that Kelly did a great job at trying to prove his point and his argument was mediocre.

As our world expands through the growing abilities and applications of computers in our everyday lives, it seems that the role of the computer has been reversed. Before we knew that the computer only understood what we programmed it to understand; however, now the majority of our society is learning more from computers than they are able to input into it. When most people think of artificial intelligence they might think of a scene from I, Robot or from 2001: A Space Odyssey. They might think of robots that highly resemble humans start a revolution against humanity and suddenly, because of man’s creation, man is no longer the pinnacle of earth’s hierarchy of creatures. For this reason, it might scare people when I say that we already utilize artificial intelligence in every day society. While it might not be robots fighting to win their freedom to live, or a defense system that decides humanity is the greatest threat to the world, artificial intelligence already plays a big role in how business is conducted today.
At the end of the last Millennium a group of academics and experts in artificial intelligence postulated fourteen outstanding questions and problems that they believed would need to be solved as the development of artificial life progressed. The fourteenth and final problem posited by this panel was to “establish ethical principles for artificial life” in four main regards: “the sanctity of the biosphere, the sanctity of human life, the responsible treatment of newly generated life forms and the risks of exploitations of artificial life.”(Bedau 374)
Over the decades, A.I. has been advancing at an exponential rate and has been causing major global debates. Due to the fear that it will eventually take over human labor, certain groups of people have been protesting and wanting A.I. to be regulated so that they can feel a sense of relief as to how far companies can go with this new technology. This is AI that is able to function and complete many different tasks, all with the same programming. It will learn from watching or doing research on the internet like we do today, the only difference is that strong AI will be able to learn much quicker then we can it could read millions of papers online about a specific topic in just a few hours. AI will be able to do anything we can do just faster and then after it can do that it will try to make itself faster and find different ways to complete a task that is easier or a way that takes less time. Now that creates a new topic of argument if AI starts trying to find better ways to complete a task we have to make sure our morals and values are the same as the AI’s morals and values. South Korea has set an official goal of getting a robot in every home by 2013 and the Japan Robot Association predicts that the personal robot industry will be worth about $50 billion dollars a year worldwide (Bar-Cohen 162). Only time will tell if these predictions are correct. As for now, however, the nonexistence of gyros, robot nursemaids, and visavoxes should caution mankind to be more conservative in the prediction of the future, at least until the science fiction of 1965 finally becomes complete science fact.
Artificial intelligence has become a big controversy between scientists within the past few years. Will artificial intelligence improve our communities in ways we humans can’t, or will they just cause danger to us? I believe that artificial intelligence will only bring harm to our communities. There are multiple reasons why artificial intelligence will bring danger to humanity, some of them being: you can’t trust them, they will lead to more unemployment, and they will cause more obesity.
