“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Through these words alone, Thomas Jefferson and the rest of the delegates inspired their fellow colonists to fight against the tyrant, King George III. Throughout the United States’ history, Americans have gone through various trials to prove themselves as a nation. For example, the fight amongst themselves proved that they could abolish slavery and unite as one nation. I believe that high school students should learn about America’s past documents that involve important parts of our history. I believe that we should learn about them because they show how we developed our rights, how the documents affect everyday life, and how they must be kept to preserve our rights in the future. I believe that these documents serve as a foundation for how our lives are today. It is important to look at how we have developed these rights from what they were. For example, our first Amendment states that we have the right to our freedom of speech. If this wasn’t Amendment wasn’t put in our Bill of Rights, we wouldn't have the privilege to speak our minds when we please. It is important for an average American to keep in mind that we have these freedoms, and that they should be enforced when needed. Most of the Amendments from the Bill of Rights protect ourselves from the government and it is important that we make sure that we are individuals in this enormous country.
