1. Truman Capote takes a position on Capital Punishment
A. While reading the book, Truman capote does take a position on capital punishment. Throughout the book and the film capote there are many signs that show Truman is against capital punishment, from facial reactions to words that the characters say. During his research and while he was writing in cold blood, he grew significantly close to Perry and after the trial was up he had to watch Perry get hung right in front of his eyes. There was a scene in particular that stood out to me, when Perry was on death row, he asked the police if he could use the bathroom, the police told him no. he said they normally just go on themselves” treating the prisons like animals, not letting them use the bathroom. This is a way capote is trying to express his view on capital punishment.
"They don't feel nothing. Drop, snap, and that's it. They don't feel nothing." Says the guard
"Are you sure? I was standing right close. I could hear him gasping for breath." Said capote
"Uh-huh, but he don't feel nothing. Wouldn't be humane if he did." Said the guard
"Well. And I suppose they feed them a lot of pills. Sedatives." Said capote
"Hell, no. Against the rules. . . ." (340) Said the guard

Capote says he hears Perry gasping for breath; the guard was trying to make it sound like it was humane to do that, however inhumane is hanging someone and pretending like they do not feel it. They stood around after he dropped waiting for the last heart beat to stop. Perry did not die instantly.

... class. This book was actually one of most interesting books I’ve read while I’ve been in college, and this course kept me interested the whole semester. The things it has taught me about the meaning of reading and evaluating other people and their personalities and who they really are. It actually came to mind a couple times, maybe I want to be a psychologist and help people with their problems. It just really amazes me how Perry’s dad can literally be the cause of four innocent lives gone. Throughout reading the book and watching both films, I began better at reading people and observing their personalities not only with the characters in the book but also outside the classroom and in the real world. The fact that everyone has a story and reasons they are the way they are. Perry had a story that no one knew about, and it has just taught me that everyone has one
