The Gilded Age – Troubled America’s Thin Veil
Mark Twain coined the term “Gilded Age”, which was used to describe America’s economic boom, and correlative resurgence of civil unrest after the American Civil War. The word “Gilded” means covered in gold and Twain used this word to satirize America, as he saw the time of post-war prosperity as just a thin layer of gold concealing the economic struggle farmers faced, social tension and mistreatment faced by industrial workers, and political corruption by officials who used their power to line their own pockets.
Technological improvements made during the late 1800s greatly improved the quality of life for middle-class Americans, but poorer agricultural workers suffered under new economic conditions. …show more content…

Factories subdivided labor until workers performed singular, menial tasks which nullified the value of specialized, skilled workers (Foner). Workers capable of performing multiple skillful jobs now had little value to factories, which broke down production into its most basic parts. Employers had no reason to pay for skilled workers when an unskilled worker only needs to understand and repeat a single part of the manufacturing process and will work for much less money. This shift in industrial labor and working conditions led to rioting and violent protests held by groups of industrial workers against the industrial companies that mistreated them. Many industry officials were afraid of the ensuing class warfare, and eventually caved to meet the demands of the groups of workers. These workers formed unions, and laws were created to recognize and protect the rights and safety of laborers employed by the industries that previously mistreated them (Foner).
