“Education is a social process; education is growth; education is not preparation for life but is life itself.” John Dewey describes and supports progressivism, an education philosophy that I professionally identify with. Progressivism is a student centered philosophy that focuses on experiences, opportunities, and values that enhance a student 's learning and life. The role of the teacher is to act primarily as a facilitator of learning, they encourage and guide students to explore and promote individual development. As a future educator I believe it is important to involve students and allow them to take responsibility for their own learning and achieving their goals. It is beneficial to teach real world lessons and inspire student discovery and problem solving. The curriculum focuses on the interests of the students and establishes a fine balance between valued content and interactive learning activities. The curriculum is important because it has the ability to reach students on different levels and what appeals to them. When students are interested in the subject matter, they want to learn and do not feel forced to learn. The instruction and delivery of this philosophy is very important because I believe active engagement, constructivism, and cooperative learning will enhance the students life skills and what they will carry with them in the future. The learning environment connects the classroom to the community through a democratic approach. This community based learning brings the world into the classroom so students can implement social change and challenge social inequalities. The curriculum focuses on student experience and taking social action on real problems such as hunger, violence, and discrimination. It is important to instruct students to explore in group settings so they can work together to analyze and develop theories that can help each other and make a real different in the world. Progressivism is a broad political philosophy based on the idea of progress, which assets that advance in science, technology, economic, department, and social organization can improve the human condition. It implies a philosophy which welcomes innovations and reformers in the political, economic, and social order. Progressivism was in 1890- 1920 when the middle class and lower class came together to attack the upper crust cities. Progressives crossed party lines, came from variety class in society, most urban middle class, college educated, committed to improve all aspects of American Life, and etc.. It is the 1900’s, America has just recently won it’s war with Spain and is feeling pretty good but, underneath it all, a reform movement called Progressivism is rising within the United States. (Background Essay). Progressivism is calling for the reformation of problems, like the ones previously mentioned. They believe in social equality, and they want it done without major economic downfalls. I have been gratefully gifted with $1,000,000 and given a question: where will I put my million dollars between the many progressivism causes? The three causes I would like to help and reform would be: conversation and deforestation, food safety, and women’s rights.
Progressivism is a time of change, a time for reform, that has helped shape America to be the nation it is today. Progressivism is defined as “the political orientation of those who favor progress toward better conditions in government and society (WordNet Search).” Between this era, and World War One, a lot of time and effort when into what the influences the country went under between the power of Woodrow Wilson and the society along with Europe, Russia, France, and everyone else involved in this war. The progressive era was a thirty year span from 1890s until the 1920s. People saw that there was many horrible things occurring in society and the government and they wanted these things to be fixed. Some examples of these things are living conditions, work conditions, and the wrong that the government was doing. Reformers wanted to solve issues with efficiency, nonpartisanship, morality, democratization, education, and expertise. People do not know exactly where these progressives came from, but it was more or less a group effort that grew and grew with the ideas of bettering the country as a whole, even if some of these choices and solutions were not that great. Yes, the motives for the reform were good but sometimes included horrible actions which excluded people or discriminated others.
In the years from 1890 to 1917, the time period known as the Progressive Era took place. This era was based on the new ideology of progressivism. Progressivism is a reform development in response to desire to improve the life during the industrial age. In this movement, the United States aimed to use government power to reform the country and its citizens, including making moderate political changes and social improvement. Two of the most prominent figures in this time period that brought out the most change were President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt and President Woodrow Wilson. While both contributed greatly to the reform and improvement during the Progressive Era, they both differed in how they did so. Economically, both presidents passed legislation to keep monopolies and corrupt companies out of power, however President Roosevelt sought to keep the good monopolies whereas President Wilson sought to destroy all monopolies. Politically, both Wilson and Roosevelt passed legislation to help the people and bring equal representation, such as with Roosevelt’s New Nationalism Plan and Wilson’s New Freedom Plan. Socially, both presidents worked hard to improve the working conditions of laborers; however Roosevelt focused on the area of conservation whereas Wilson focused on foreign affairs. In their terms in office, President Roosevelt and President Wilson passed many laws and reforms impacted by their own views that helped the country grow into a stronger nation economically, politically, and socially during the Progressive Era.

Education in the United States allows the future to progress and create a country that encompasses able individuals. As a Progressivist and Essentialist, my students are the center of learning, planning and progressing. As the nurturer in my classroom, my students will continue to develop into proficient individuals that will make a positive impact on their environment. I will guide my students to choose their own way of learning by aligning curriculum to each individual. By individualizing learning, my students will develop and progress on their own level, which will lead to success. I am a soul believer in progressivism. I believe that when John Dewey taught that we are social animals who learn well through increases when we are engaged in activities that interest us, he was not just talking about classrooms in his time, but classrooms in the future as well. Students must be taken beyond the basic curriculum and be allowed to expand their knowledge through their own interests. Students need to be respected for their own individuality. No two people can learn the same way and most students have their own strategy of learning. Teachers need to be able to recognize that sometimes a student can only learn in one fashion and in that fashion alone. This is why we must compensate for every student in the classroom to bring a variety of teaching styles to be sure to include every student.
Progressives were people who wanted to apply their forward thinking concepts to the American government. One of their biggest beliefs was that government should be actively involved in large corporations. They thought that it was the government's responsibility to regulate the actions of large corporations. Warren Harding’s administration went against this belief and many other beliefs that progressives had. These differences of ideals is what caused progressivism to inevitably die at the beginning of the 20th century. “We therefore demand a strong National regulation of inter-state corporations...the existing concentration of vast wealth under a corporate system, unguarded and uncontrolled by the nation…”(Document A). Education serves as the foundation to a lifetime of learning. Since every child is unique, I believe that it is important for them to learn in an environment that is both secure and stimulating. By creating this type of atmosphere, the students will be able to realize their intelligence and use it constructively. As a future educator, it will be my goal to establish a classroom that is, 1) non-authoritarian, 2) student-centered, and 3) focused around student experience. These three elements are part of Progressivism, the educational philosophy I plan to incorporate in my classroom.
The first and most important of the three formal educational philosophies that have been major influences on the formation of my own philosophy is progressivism. Progressivism is based on the belief that people learn best from what they consider to be relevant to their every day lives. In other words, students learn best from personal experience, hands-on experiments, and from interacting in groups with those around them. However, for these small groups to be entirely effective, they must be chosen at random; basing the groups on race, gender, sexuality, or social background will defeat their main purpose.
Progressivists emphasize in their curriculum the study of the natural and social sciences. They believe that teachers should expose students to many new scientific, technological, and social developments, reflecting their notion that progress and change are fundamental. Students should also be exposed to a more democratic curriculum that recognizes accomplishments of women and minorities as well as white males. In addition, students should solve problems in the classroom similar to those they will encounter outside of the schoolhouse; they will learn to be flexible problem solvers.
I think it is extremely important that students maintain their individuality all throughout childhood and carry it through them into adulthood. Both of these philosophies promote individuality. Progressivism promotes individuality because it encourages the student to come up with conclusions on their own, in ways that makes most sense to them so they can grasp the content in the best way possible. This provokes deeper, more meaningful ways of thinking. Existentialism is important for students because it encourages them to be unique in thought and action, to embrace who they are deep down inside and to not let their individuality fade as they grow older. I believe that these two philosophies are the most important ones when it comes to the student’s individual uniqueness, which can bring such great things into this world. Not every child thinks the same, so not every child learns the same. Consequently, if we allow children to learn as they wish, as long as they put towards an effort, their minds will grow to a greater degree than if we teach one specific way to teach each
The classroom environment should do as much too foster cooperation and acceptance as the teaching methods that the teacher uses.” (Bucholz 2009) I sincerely believe that the scheme of the classroom honestly reveals what the teacher’s inherent values are about their students and their education. My classroom will also be a reflection of my educational philosophy. I believe that in order to provoke achievement, motivation, and purpose in my students, the space will have to reflect and facilitate my expectations. The classroom space, much like the world, should never be static. My classroom will stand as a reflection of my students and their achievements in learning. The walls will encompass posters, projects, and skill-sets pertinent to the current area of study. It will essentially be a non-authoritarian environment in which the students can feel welcomed, wanted, and appreciated as an individual. Like a Progressivist classroom, the majority of the time inside my classroom walls, the desks will be positioned into groups which are appropriate for fostering cooperative learning and teamwork skills through the use of group projects, active hands-on experimentation, and deep rooted learning through questions and answers. Alternatively, I believe in the importance of students to not always be reliant on the “group thinking” aspect. They need to be able to be strong self-thinkers and ultimately know how to depend on themselves for answers. This is why my classroom, at times, will be arranged into an Essentialist environment with desks neatly placed into individual rows. I feel that this arrangement allows the individual student to be held accountable for themselves. I feel the importance of this is to develop strong self-thinkers and leaders in society, rather than cooperative followers that
Progressivism is a theory of education that encourages students to think on their own and create their own ideas to test out. In order, for the students to figure out the answer to their new idea or concept learned with hands on experiences used in the classroom. The progressivist named John Dewey believed that people learned most when their past experiences related to the concepts they are currently learning. This allows the students to connect with their experience that happened in life to the new stuff they would currently learn in the classrooms. In which, the students would engage more to learn about the new ideas or knowledge. Progressivists also believed that education should allow students to learn from each other to create a better society. The teacher’s role in the classroom is to keep in check that the students are on task but not under mind their new ideas while doing an experiment. The methods they use are student focused or orientated such as discussion, mental modeling. The students can engage with their peers and discuss their new ideas or own opinions with other without any judgement of being wrong.
