Educational philosophies do not singlehandedly define who we are as educators. There is almost always a mix between philosophies that identify our values as educators. I found that I have identified most with a progressive philosophy, also known as a pragmatist philosophy. This philosophy stood out to me when I had first learned about the different types and my guess that I fit into this category most was confirmed when I scored my sheet. A progressive or pragmatic philosophy is one that focuses on the entire child. This means that, as an educator, I focus on making sure that the child benefits from education more than just learning new topics. There is more to teaching than just making sure the content is absorbed. Making sure that the child is emotionally and physically well before trying to teach them new concepts is important because if a child does not feel comfortable in their learning setting, they will not grasp all of the information that they need to. Also, I believe that it is important for children to learn about life and social skills while they are in school. If they are able to learn about life and why they are actually learning certain material, it can help them to work harder and really see school in a more positive light. As stated by Theodore Michael Christou, progressivism is, “populated by hybrid discourses, constellated and interacting in multiple spaces” (Christou 2012, 279). To me, this perfectly sums up how the progressive philosophy of teaching combines multiple perspectives in order to make sure that children learn in the best way possible for their own learning style. I believe that as an educator is really is my job to help to guide children through the educational system in the best way possible for them. Many progressives thought that the greatest way to reform society was through its schools. Public education had grown rapidly since the Civil War. Progressives had new ideas about the purpose of education. Progressive educators believed that children should learn best by contributing in activities where they can work on projects and learn at their own rate. I thought this idea was a better way of learning because memorizing methods were really stressful and many people have diverse ways of learning: visual, hearing, hands on, and etc.

Progressive education was a movement based on an emphasis of learning by doing. This style of learning was more about hands-on projects and more experimental learning with groups that will help sharpen social skills. It was a style that allowed teachers to teach the content areas around the needs of the students. John Dewey was a huge supporter and promoter for progressive education. Dewey stated in his journal My Pedagogic Creed, “I believe that the true education comes through the stimulation of the child’s powers by the demands of social situations in which he finds himself.”(Vol. 54 p.77) He believed that all learning took place based on the social situations a kid was presented. Dewey started schools in Chicago that were based on the progressive movements. The school actually combined to teach future teachers this style and approach to education. Dewey stated “This process begins unconsciously almost at birth, and is continually shaping the individual’s powers, saturating his consciousness, forming his habits, training his ideas, and arousing his feelings and emotions.”(Vol.54 p.77) He believed that the set-up of schools should be designed and taught around the real-life and occupational based on community surroundings. Along with the help of other school reformers such as Ella Flag Young, they tried to change school systems throughout the country.
In the years from 1890 to 1917, the time period known as the Progressive Era took place. This era was based on the new ideology of progressivism. Progressivism is a reform development in response to desire to improve the life during the industrial age. In this movement, the United States aimed to use government power to reform the country and its citizens, including making moderate political changes and social improvement. Two of the most prominent figures in this time period that brought out the most change were President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt and President Woodrow Wilson. While both contributed greatly to the reform and improvement during the Progressive Era, they both differed in how they did so. Economically, both presidents passed legislation to keep monopolies and corrupt companies out of power, however President Roosevelt sought to keep the good monopolies whereas President Wilson sought to destroy all monopolies. Politically, both Wilson and Roosevelt passed legislation to help the people and bring equal representation, such as with Roosevelt’s New Nationalism Plan and Wilson’s New Freedom Plan. Socially, both presidents worked hard to improve the working conditions of laborers; however Roosevelt focused on the area of conservation whereas Wilson focused on foreign affairs. In their terms in office, President Roosevelt and President Wilson passed many laws and reforms impacted by their own views that helped the country grow into a stronger nation economically, politically, and socially during the Progressive Era.

From an educational standpoint, the term converts to define a pedagogical movement that began in the late nineteenth century and has persisted in various forms to the present. (Wikipedia.org) The idea of progressivism was introduced around the late 1890s (early 1900s) during the Progressive Era, in an effort to respond to the economic (industrial) and social issues that industrialization acquainted. The movement created the downfall of an exclusive government and converted it into a pro-reform network, made laws that set salaries and working standards, gave more rights to women, controlled child labor, and many more things that have impacted today’s government and legal decisions. Progressivism has greatly influenced the way that educators effectively educate their students, and how the students affected by it operate.
The progressive era was a time of great change, the way people thought and what they did began to change quickly. Industry and business also changed a great deal in this era, with the many new inventions and strong businessmen things where rapidly changing.

Pursuing a career in Education has led me to different philosophical perspectives of education that will be utilized in my future classroom. Behind every educational facility and educator lies a value system and set of beliefs that influence their philosophy of education. My educational philosophy and goals are influenced by a combination of both progressive and behavioral aspects. Most imperative is the characteristics of progressivism that appeal to my values and belief system.
My placement teachers and the teachers I have had throughout my life have definitely influenced my philosophy on education. Although my beliefs concerning education aren’t set in stone, I believe I have more of an Eclectic view on education. My beliefs tend to come from many of the different philosophies rather than one sole philosophy. One of the philosophical approaches I will take during my educational career is Perennialism. This is the traditional and conservative view, and its followers consider school to be an institution designed solely to develop students’ intellect. Perennialists generally follow the beliefs of Aristotle. The perennialist teacher must be a good reader and writer and encourage students to improve both of these skills. Three primary approaches to learning are stresses: didactic teaching of concepts such as, the operations and uses of mathematics; coaching of skills; and seminars in which various topics are discussed in depth through the Socratic method.
I can not narrow down my educational philosophy to one area. I have studied the teacher-centered philosophies and I would consider myself somewhat eclectic, having a mixture of progressivism and essentialism.

Progressivism is a student centered philosophy that focuses on experiences, opportunities, and values that enhance a student 's learning and life. The role of the teacher is to act primarily as a facilitator of learning, they encourage and guide students to explore and promote individual development. As a future educator I believe it is important to involve students and allow them to take responsibility for their own learning and achieving their goals. The role of the student is to discover, engage, and express themselves.
I think it is extremely important that students maintain their individuality all throughout childhood and carry it through them into adulthood. Both of these philosophies promote individuality. Progressivism promotes individuality because it encourages the student to come up with conclusions on their own, in ways that makes most sense to them so they can grasp the content in the best way possible. This provokes deeper, more meaningful ways of thinking. Existentialism is important for students because it encourages them to be unique in thought and action, to embrace who they are deep down inside and to not let their individuality fade as they grow older. I believe that these two philosophies are the most important ones when it comes to the student’s individual uniqueness, which can bring such great things into this world. Not every child thinks the same, so not every child learns the same. Consequently, if we allow children to learn as they wish, as long as they put towards an effort, their minds will grow to a greater degree than if we teach one specific way to teach each
Progressivism is a theory of education that encourages students to think on their own and create their own ideas to test out. In order, for the students to figure out the answer to their new idea or concept learned with hands on experiences used in the classroom. The progressivist named John Dewey believed that people learned most when their past experiences related to the concepts they are currently learning. This allows the students to connect with their experience that happened in life to the new stuff they would currently learn in the classrooms. In which, the students would engage more to learn about the new ideas or knowledge. Progressivists also believed that education should allow students to learn from each other to create a better society. The teacher’s role in the classroom is to keep in check that the students are on task but not under mind their new ideas while doing an experiment. The methods they use are student focused or orientated such as discussion, mental modeling. The students can engage with their peers and discuss their new ideas or own opinions with other without any judgement of being wrong. Progressivism and epistemology are closed connected because they let students help each other out learn new ideas with the information given by the teachers, and can connect it knowledge they have from previous
My philosophy of education is a combination of essentialism and progressivism . I feel that knowledge can be learned from a textbook, but I also want my students to use other means of knowledge. I fell in certain times, I should be the center of the classroom and other times, the students should be the center. Education is about the students and I am there to guide them through their journey. I think it's important to let children learn by exploring. By doing this, they choose what information is important and should be retained. When it comes to learning, students should always be in the center. The teachers are only there to mentor and improve upon a child's skills. In my mind progressivism with a mix of essentialism is the best philosophy for me to follow.
