What are the effects of power outages on businesses in South Africa? Power outages create problems in the socio-economic development of the country because businesses, factories, shops, hospitals etc. struggle to continue functioning due these outages. The elderly, sick and very young are the most vulnerable, especially during the colder months. Students are also affected, they sit in the darkness and are unable to study or work. Patients also suffer terribly because operations stop in hospitals and the limited generator power is diverted to essential services. Power outages at night also encourage thieves. People and hospitals have problems with their day to day activities, offices aren’t able to run properly; people aren’t able to do their work on time. Businesses in the fresh food industry will suffer from unnecessary wastage and expense during power cuts. Power outages could lead to financial breakdown and an economic misbalance. Businesses suffer because they run mainly on power. This means a loss of customers and income- production decreases and slows everything else down, which in turn slows the economy down. Manufacturing, cold storage, processing, ready-to-eat food item-makers and businesses that provide a service will be affected severely; as there is already pressure on their profit margins; many businesses are forced to underutilize their capacity during power cuts. For many of us power outages are nothing more than an inconvenience, but it can have a serious effect on any business, especially those that are heavily reliant on a stable power supply. There is the irritation of things not going as planned and the fact that power outages costs businesses time and money. Businesses are all frustrated by the constant powe... ... middle of paper ... ...electronics are plugged into surge protectors. • Obtain an alternate power source. • Use backup power sources for emergency power. • Have an emergency lighting ready. • Prepare your employees. • Make plans regarding customers. Have an emergency plan for customers. • Only use generators in well-ventilated areas. Businesses should get backup generator installed to cover future power cuts taking into account the initial cost and the cost during an outage for fuel and maintenance. Our country has the greatest potential in the world for alternative energy – we have excellent sunshine for solar power and areas of the country that would work well for wind farms. Build new power plants, Minimize electricity theft, Stop corruption and Use renewable energy sources. It should become socially unacceptable to use power inefficiently. We all need to stand up for our own future.
In July, 2004 Doyle had called for a legislation to prevent massive power blackouts like the one that hit the northeast this past year. In August 14, 2003, a massive power outage affected more than 50 million people in eight different stats, Ontario, and Quebec in Canada. Many households were without power for several days. This blackout began in Ohio, where three transmission lines short-circuited. An investigation found that the energy company that owned those power lines was in violation of at least four North Electric Reliability Council operating standards. Doyle introduced almost a year ago a legislation that would establish a national Electric Reliability Organization to enforce power reliability standards across the country. If an organization was to be established it
The new millennium casts a different role for candles. Not only are candles used as light sources during power outage, but they also symbolise festivity, calm the senses, mark intimacy, and accent home decors.
In the past, the United States has already repeatedly occurred the blackout. Especially in 1977, there was a large-scale power outages and the city became a big mess. At that time, blackout of 1977 not only resulting in significant economic losses, but also a power shortage triggered kind of serious public problems. It could be the strong contrast with the past blackout, so the blackout of 1977 was more striking and deeply impressive.
America is threatened by the destruction of their own environment. United States is known for their innovation towards alternative energy like solar power, wind power and nuclear power. However , these alternative energies are not completely beneficial towards the United States.
middle of paper ... ... The downtime, unfortunately, was more than we planned. But unlike other sectors, the electrical grid is a more complex system when one area is affected. It often requires isolation of systems to get the components back on line and at full operational range before restoration commences.
People might get hurt from the electricity generator explosion. In this event, the generator might have to work overload because they need a lot of electricity. This generator is located near the audience, therefore it has a chance to explode and hurt the audiences. My suggestion is the generator should be located farther to the audiences, and should have technician to check them often.

Electricity and electrical components are a major part of our lives today. Our lives pretty much come to a halt if there is a power outage or if our electrical devices stop working, sometimes we even start panicking because we are so dependent on these components that we cannot afford to lose them and their importance and use only increases as time passes. We all use these electrical devices and also electricity itself but most of us do not think about the math and physics that works behind all of these things.
Conclusion Overall, the consequences of not having a Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plan can become costly in the event of a disaster. Most companies will find themselves in financial disarray when having to rebuild and/or replace any portions of the IT infrastructure that were destroyed during a disaster event. Hence, companies invest in insurance to cover such costs; however, there must be a balance because even with insurance an organization may still incur high expenses. Having a good disaster recovery and business continuity plan will keep your company up and running through any kind of interruptions such as power failures, IT system crashes, natural or man-made disasters, supply chain/vendor problems and more.
In order to fully understand the concept of a contingency plan, there are a few aspects which need to be explored. We must first define what a contingency plan is, followed by an explanation of why contingency plans are so valuable. Furthermore, an analysis of the implementation of contingency plans should be performed. Lastly, a comparison of such plans from other industries should be done, in order to comprehend the differences in both purpose and criteria.
...at there is no electricity so you than grab a candle and light it so you can continue your book. It is past your bedtime and you are tired, before you go to bed you refill the wood stove so you don’t wake up freezing like this morning. Before you go to bed you think about how much we use electricity on a day-to-day basis and how much we depend on it to make our lives easier.
The world that we live into today affords us the expectation that the flip a switch will turn the lights on. As populations increase and developing nations undergo dramatic economic growth, this energy demand will only continue to grow. The International Energy Agency (IEA) believes that “the world’s energy needs could be 50% higher in 2030 than they are today” (ElBaradei). Given this projected growth, it is necessary for world leaders must take action to secure the energy supply. Meaning that world leaders need to start seriously considering an alternative to non-renewable energy sources. “In 2012, the United States generated about 4,054 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. About 68% of the electricity generated was from fossil fuel (coal, natural gas, and petroleum), with 37% attributed from coal” (U.S. Energy Information Administration). The fossil fuels that are used to supply over half of our country’s energy are in finite supply and are increasing in price to astronomical heights.
For years man has relied on energy in order to be successful in life. The industrial revolution relied on coal for the new inventions brought into the world. Life as has never been the same since then. However since that time, there has been little done to improve on energy efficiency and humans still primarily rely on fossil fuels for energy. For over a hundred years the Earth has become more polluted and dirtier than ever before. Now, with new, innovative technology there is an opportunity to change that and to rely on renewable, cleaner sources of energy. The main source of energy for the world should be alternative energy instead of energy from fossil fuels.
Using fossil fuels such as coal and oil is inefficient, dangerous, and otherwise a process that is known to eventually fail as a long lasting energy source. Yet, there is hope for the future of energy, this new hope has many shapes and forms, but requires a chance to be fully implemented in our everyday life. Such energy sources like solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, and hydro power are the key to our future. These energy sources are proven to be long lasting, safe, more reliable, and the next innovation. In short, all Americans should switch to renewable energy, resulting in a safer and more efficient world.
