Effective communication is critical within the criminal justice setting. No records system can be effective without clearly communicating policies, directives, and procedures. Nor can an officer carry out a mission or survive without clear communications. Because communication involves the exchange of information between people (Wallace & Roberson, 2009) it is important to consider how people may perceive what is said or written in different situations. In this paper I will discuss the criminal justice setting, how they utilizes formal and informal channels of communication along with the use of verbal, non-verbal, communication. I will discuss the different barriers of communication, the difference of hearing and listening and how to overcome the barriers of communication in the criminal justice setting. Verbal and nonverbal communication play a big part in society, they are necessary to people getting along and building relationships. In the criminal justice setting verbal communication consists of written and spoken information. Non-verbal communication ensures the speaker to communicate what he or she is saying to the reader with a certain tone and body language. Both verbal and non-verbal communication has at least three components, the person who creates the communication, the communication itself, and the person who receives the communication. When defining verbal communication it includes oral (spoken), visual (seen), written, and electronic communication. Non- verbal includes tone of voice, facial expression, and body movement. According to (Hurt, n.d), in speech-based communication, this is the speaker, the words they used, and the listener. Another example would be written communication: the writer, the written piece... ... middle of paper ... ...llows persons transmitting messages to adapt to the receiver. Receiving feedback and giving feedback are processes that enhance police officers’ ability to effectively communicate with others. In conclusion communication plays an important role in people’s personal and professional lives. As much as 70 percent of work time is spent communicating with others. Several barriers to communication exist (Wallace & Roberson, 2009, Chapter 4). They range from emotional feelings to physical obstacles that prevent the free flow of information. Effective listening and feedback is a technique that anyone can learn. Anyone tasked with the job of communicating would need to keep in mind the goal of any communication, specifically, to deliver accurate information. By following the simple strategies of communication, anyone can eliminate the frustration of poor communication.
