Nikola Tesla Have you ever walked into a room, turned on a light, and wondered, “Who gave us the ability to do this?” Nikola Tesla is the man’s name. He invented Alternating Current, or AC, which is the electrical system that we use to power our world today. In this paper, I will be describing a few of Nikola Tesla’s innovations and how they inspired and impacted our way of life. HISTORY Before I start on his inventions, I will give a bit of history on the man that lit our world. Tesla was born July 10, 1856. He was born in an area that is now known as Smiljan, Croatia. It is said that while his mother was mid-birth, there was a fierce lightning storm. The maiden called this a bad omen and Tesla’s mother responded with, “No, this will be a Tesla designed and invented the tesla coil in 1891. The tesla coil is used to transmit- high electricity and high frequency using the rotating magnetic field, and Alternating Current similar to the design he used for the rotating magnetic field. Tesla often experimented using two or sometimes three of the coils. He wanted to pursue these new devices to bring about innovations and discoveries. Tesla was also going to use them to help deliver free energy to the people. He envisioned and believed the Earth to be a big magnet of transmitting electricity. He thought the only thing missing from it was basically a receiver. But his tesla coils helped him bring about the invention of electrical lighting, his very used and widely-known x-ray, electrotherapy, and as I have previously stated, this was his first step at trying to receive energy from the earth. Today, the tesla coil is used for amusement and in some cases, they are used to identify leaks in a vacuum system. So how does the tesla coil work? They start off with a simple spark to set it off. Oscillators, I believe I mentioned them in the history of Tesla, they are basically used to help deliver an oscillating current. The oscillator helps the coils produce currents that can range anywhere from 50 kilovolts to several million volts of electricity. This is what your typical mad scientist use in things such as Frankenstein. Except for Tesla was a very real version of those mad scientists. The tesla coil also had a capacitor in it, they are used to store an electrical current that bursts out to help it create a stronger voltage. I have also read that there is something in it called a spark gap which is a switch in the coil to turn it on. Since I have let you know what the machine consists of, I will now discuss the operation cycle. First, the transformer sends high voltages up to the capacitor. There is something called a breakdown voltage there.
Nikola Tesla is a man that many individuals associate with brilliance. Moreover, Tesla is a name that ignites impulses within an individual’s brain which illuminate, via bio-circuitry, the thought association of Tesla and brilliance, similar to the force we term as electricity. Brilliance however, shouldn’t be the only descriptive word to come to mind when thinking of one of the greatest engineers and inventors to live. Innovation and determination should be undoubtedly included in the list of descriptive words of Mr. Nikola Tesla. For without the innovative mind of Tesla, midcentury inventions as well as current technological advances would be nonexistent, or worse, credited to Thomas Edison.
Nikola Tesla (Physicist, Inventor, Futurist) – Nikola Tesla was a Serbian American electrical engineer, inventor, physicist, futurist and mechanical engineer who was recognized for his assistance in the proposal of alternating current (AC) for the system of electricity. He was born on July 10, 1856 in Smiljan, Austrian Empire which is presently known as Croatia. His father was named Milutin Tesla and was an Orthodox Priest. While his mother, Duka Tesla, was good in making home mechanical appliances, craft tools and has the skill to memorize Serbian poems.
Tesla’s career as an inventor started when he was in his late twenties. He displayed his incredible understanding of electricity and physics when he created his first invention, the induction motor. The induction motor is a small, electric motor that has become a very useful machine. In fact, most household appliances run using Tesla’s induction motor (Vujovic 1). Score one for Tesla. Soon after he invented the induction motor, Tesla moved to America to try his luck at living the American dream. While in New York City, Tesla got the amazing opportunity to work for his hero, Thomas Edison. However, Tesla soon quit working for Edison due to some disagreements between the two inventors. And so with Edison and his men biting at Tesla’s heels, Nikola set out on his own to make a name for himself (Vujovic 1). Tesla soon became Edison’s greatest competitor. While tinkering in his lab with one of his inventions called the Tesla Coil, Tesla discovered that he could send and receive radio signals when his coils were tuned to the exact same frequency...

That being said, if given the opportunity to spend the next year of my life in a different time period I would like to live during the year 1942 so I could work beside Tesla. This is where a man named Mr. Brown who helped Nikola with his money problems and let him use a lab. Here Nikola created his first actual none model AC generator and a few other devices. Edison tried to tarnish the AC generator’s name by saying it was unsafe and that his DC system worked better. This began the battle of the currents which was a fight between to group of people, the ones who supported the AC system, and the ones who supported the DC system. In the end Nikola’s AC system ended up winning this battle when he proved that it was safe at the world fair where he stood in a room filled with currents from his AC generator and came out unharmed. After the world fair Nikola didn’t stop with just the AC system he went on to create many new devices such as the tesla coil (or those zappy things in the Frankenstein movies) which are used widely in radios. He also created a wireless remote controlled boat, he improved the radio, and went on to try and give free power to the world but sadly this idea failed do to money issues.
