Florence Nightingale by:Meghan Suelter Florence Nightingale was born on May 12,1820 in Italy. She was with a very wealthy family who always went to and had very expensive parties. During Florence’s childhood she was known as Flo! She is still known as Flo when people talk about her today. Florence’s parents names were Francis Nightingale, and William Nightingale. They had two children named Florence and Parthe Nightingale. She was a very smart girl and wanted to read and study all the time when her mother and sister wanted to socialize. Florence and Parthe had always fought with each other. Soon their mother sent them to live with different relatives. When Florence was growing up no one really had dreams of being a nurse but Florence wanted to follow her dreams! When Florence was nineteen her and her sister got introduced to Queen Victoria of Britain! Florence and her sister were taught by a governess for a while then their father decided to teach them because he thought they were not learning anything! Even though Florence did not go to an actual school she was very very smart in all subjects. Her favorite subject was Mathematics. Florence refused to marry anyone she just wanted to follow her dreams of being a nurse. She thought that getting married would interrupt her studies. During Florene’s time the hospitals were very unsanitary and dirty. The sick people lying in the beds were getting sicker and sicker every minute. They did not have any blankets to keep warm. Many people died due to the lack of care and the unsanitary conditions. There were many infections throughout the hospitals. There were five to seven people in each hospital room. Florence was born in January of 1896 in the slums of Washington, DC. As the daughter of ex-slaves, she had it rough, but this girl had an ability that would soon show. She won a talent contest at age four, and by age seven she had made her professional debut. Two years later, she joined a vaudeville touring company. Since she was too young to do this, therefore it was not very long before she was arrested and put into an institution.
Vollmann’s story concentrates on the private experiences of individuals in a hospital. The commonality of the setting allows the reader to make necessary assumptions about the locale, timing and purpose of these hospital visits, also permitting the author flexibility in selecting events to comprise the plot. The universality of the hospital experience (lingering in the waiting room, a doctor’s examination, and a nurse’s questioning, for example) encourages the reader to relate to these private events in a shared, public manner. In this way, Vollmann relies upon one’s knowledge of hospital procedure to make greater comments about other institutions and society in general.
Louisa Mary Alcott wrote her book, “Hospital Sketches”, based on her experiences spent as a volunteer nurse at the Union Hospital in Georgetown during the American Civil War. Her account is considered a primary source that reveals the culture of nursing of the that time period. Nursing had a different definition by the historical American culture compared to today’s idea and principles of nursing. Women from various societal backgrounds were recruited into the nursing workforce to cure and heal the soldiers at war. Most of these nurses lacked proper medical experience and skills and were fairly unprepared for the unmanageable working conditions. Alcott experienced the crowdedness, poorly ventilated and rationed food as she severed as one of the nurses of her time.
Florence Nightingale was the Nurse of Nurses. In nursing school she is the first person you will hear speak of. She is known as “The lady with the lamp”. Her theory focused on the adjustment of the environment provided to protect the patient. She thought that a sleeping patient should never be awaken. Noise should always be avoided because it can startle the sleeping patient. This was a serious problem to her. She delegated tasks to other nurses, always keeping the patients safe and away from harm.
Before Nightingale, nurses were lower class citizens that were alcoholics or prostitutes with no to a little education. Florence Nightingale realized that nurses ought to have some education in caring for others and be of a higher class. In 1860, she opened the first nursing school in London that did not accept prostitutes and alcoholics. To signify Nightingale’s view of nursing, Lystra Gretter composed a Hippocratic Oath for nurses called the Nightingale pledge.

This is when Florence took action and began to sanitize and clean the hospital as best she could. In doing so she showed her problem solving characteristics. She also showed that she was a confident leader by getting these things done even if she had to argue with the military officers who considered her a nuisance (Fee, E.). Florence soon became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” or the “Angel of Crimea” (History.com, 2009). She was given these names because she spent every minute caring for her soldiers. She would make her rounds through the dark hallways in the evenings carrying her lamp (History.com, 2009).
