Drug trafficking is not a new challenge that the U.S. is faced with. The U.S has been fighting the war on drugs since 1971 when President Nixon declared a war on drugs. Today, the U.S. deals with an immeasurable amount of illegal drug activity across its borders, with the point of origin being Latin America and Caribbean territories. The U.S. government relies solely on the joint capabilities of law enforcement and government agencies, such as tactics and equipment, used to combat drug smuggling.
The drugs entering the U.S. harm citizen’s health and create problems in the country’s criminal justice system. With a significant share of these illicit drugs originating outside of the United States, the efforts to prevent their entrance are crucial to safeguarding this nation and its security. Over the years, advancing technology and communications equipment have enabled border security to better prepare, communicate, and ensure border security. Furthermore, these advances have improved the structure and networking of intelligence information.
