Cyber security is the protection of networks, computers, programs and data from attack, damage or unauthorized access. This is important because a great number of our confidential information is on computers and transmit that data across networks to other computers. As of now cyber-attack is one of the transnational issues that we are concern about in the United States. If these private networks were hack our national security infrastructure will be in distress.
Cyber security is operating through the Department of homeland security (DHS) privacy office and the component privacy offices. With each of these purposes come responsibilities for the Department of Homeland Security. First, DHS is responsible for overseeing the protection of the government domain. Second, DHS use intrusion detection tools to monitor government network traffic for malicious activity and uses this resulting data to address cyber vulnerabilities. Third, DHS ensure the security and resiliency of government networks.
As the Department of Homeland Security continues to improve cyber security across all critical information sectors as well as in cyber infrastructure and network they are not effective. As our relies on networks increase our national infrastructure becomes more vulnerable to cyber-attack. This is because we rely heavily on networks to communicate, travel, run our economy and provide government services. This is why cyber intrusions and attacks have increases over the last decade. With this increase in cyber-attack come exposing of information which can be used to collect intelligence information; disrupting critical operation, and imposing high cost on the economy. The only thing the intelligence community can do at this point is prepare the nation for future cyber-attack. DHS needs to recognize cyber security challenges and address them.
