Civil War DBQ On April 12th, 1861 Fort Sumter was assaulted by Confederate force marking the start to America’s bloodiest war and biggest tragedy. But throughout the bloodshed and gun smoke shone a light, the light of hope in every African American’s heart that they would win the battle and overcome slavery so every American, black or white could be free and be treated and viewed as equals. An America where skin color meant nothing and everyone could be what they wanted and have an equal chance at it. But for this wonderful light of hope to be achieved, African American had to play their part in the Civil War, and that they did. African Americans quickly realized that the Union could use their help. Soon run away slaves formed groups and made it to the North together. Others acted as spies that relayed information on the Confederate Army to the Union, and others simply refused to work for their masters and damaged farm equipment. These are
It was a long and dangerous journey to the North for runaway slaves but many of them were more than willing to make the journey in exchange for knowing that freedom would be the destination. Once they reached the North many slaves wished to join the Union army but were not allowed to do so. So, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 which allowed African Americans to join the army. It also outlawed slavery but southerners payed no heed to the Proclamation so slavery wasn’t really abolished until the 13th amendment. However, allowing slaves to join the army gave the Union a flood of new eager troops to fight for their cause. The company of the fourth United States Colored Troops had their photograph taken as they stood in their uniforms. Colored Troops played major roles in the Siege of Petersburg and the Battle of the New Market Heights by showing exceptional bravery and looking out for one another, white or
The story of the “Fighting Fifty-Forth” is a true testament of how when a country is in war or a time of despair they can ban together as one ,regardless of race to achieve an objective. Although they were treated unfairly and discriminated against, the 54th regiment paved the way for equality of not only African-American soldiers but for all African-Americans.
On April 12, 1861, Abraham Lincoln declared to the South that, the only reason that separate the country is the idea of slavery, if people could solve that problem then there will be no war. Was that the main reason that started the Civil war? or it was just a small goal that hides the real big reason to start the war behind it. Yet, until this day, people are still debating whether slavery is the main reason of the Civil war. However, there are a lot of facts that help to state the fact that slavery was the main reason of the war. These evidences can relate to many things in history, but they all connect to the idea of slavery.
In the spring 1861, years of building tensions between the northern states and southern states resulted in the American Civil War. In 1680 an anti-slavery Republican, Abraham Lincoln was elected president causing seven southern states to secede from the union. These seven states included--Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas--. These seven states formed the Confederate States of America. The American Civil War lasted from April 12, 1861 to May 9, 1865 and claimed more than roughly 620,000 lives. So what caused the Civil War? The three main causes of the Civil War were differences between the north and the south in economies, disagreements in abolishing slavery, and whether the State or Federal
Black soldiers were among the bravest of those fighting in the Civil War. Both free Blacks in the Union army and escaped slaves from the South rushed to fight for their freedom and they fought with distinction in many major Civil War battles. Many whites thought Blacks could not be soldiers. They were slaves. They were inferior. Many thought that if Blacks could fight in the war it would make them equal to whites and prove the theory of slavery was wrong. Even though Black soldiers had to face much discrimination during the Civil War, they were willing to fight to the death for their freedom. In the movie “Glory“ the director focused on the African Americans in the north that fought in the 54th regiment led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. During the time of the Civil War, the African Americans that fought in the 54th regiment were often treated unfairly but there were always nice people that backed them up.
In 1619, slaves from Africa started being shipped to America. In the years that followed, the slave population grew and the southern states became more dependent on the slaves for their plantations. Then in the 1800s slavery began to divide America, and this became a national conflict which lead to the Civil War. Throughout history, groups in the minority have risen up to fight for their freedom. In the United States, at the time of the Civil War African Americans had to fight for their freedom. African Americans used various methods to fight for their freedom during the Civil War such as passing information and supplies to the Union Army, escaping to Union territory, and serving in the Union’s army. These actions affected the African Americans and the United States by helping the African Americans earn citizenship and abolishing slavery in the United States.
African Americans helped shape the Civil War from various perspectives. Actually, they were the underlying foundation for the war if you think about it in depth. African Americans were slaves and had been dealt with like property since they arrived in America. The likelihood of opportunity for these slaves created an enormous commotion in the South. The issue of equal rights for African Americans brought on a gap between the states. The United States Civil War began as an effort to save the Union, and ended in a fight to abolish slavery. The Civil War, frequently known as the War Between the States in the United States, which was a Civil War battled from 1861 to 1865, after seven Southern slave states proclaimed their severance and framed the Confederate States of the United States. More Americans died in the Civil War than in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War combined. Two thirds of the individuals that were killed in the Civil War died of disease. The medical world at the time of the Civil War and advanced disinfectants, did not exist which could have enormously lessen the spread of disease and illnesses. After years of bloody combat that left over 600,000 soldier’s dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, & the difficult Reconstruction process of restoring national unity and guaranteeing rights to the freed slaves began. By December 1865 the 13th Amendment had abolished slavery throughout the United States (Waldstreicher).
Although the slaves had families they had no control on whether or not they would stay together. Slaves were sold to different parts of the country in which sometimes they would never see their family members again. Although slavery was accepted, the northern part of America allowed African Americans to be free. This ultimately led to a bloody division between the North and the South. The south led a revolt to go to war against the north, specifically in order to keep their rights to allow slavery.
The American Civil War is perhaps the most important event in U.S. history since the American Revolution. Over half a million men would perish between the Union and Confederate Armies. It is important to know that Ulysses S. Grant was an important figure (perhaps the most important behind Abraham Lincoln) in the war. Many will see him as the hero of the American Civil War. Nevertheless there were others who would play an important role to help the Union win the Civil War. The implementation of black soldiers was crucial to the Union in order to achieve victory against the Confederate Army. Yet, the contributions and accomplishments of black soldiers during the Civil War were overlooked for nearly a century following the Civil War. However, within the last 30 years, many scholars and historians have begun to publish books on the history of black soldiers and their contributions to the Civil War. During the Civil War, free blacks were permitted to serve in the Union Army. But it was not until 1863, that black soldiers would see combat and charge against the confederate armies. It is estimated that around 186,000 African American served the Union Army throughout the war, with the creation of 163 colored regiments. My research paper will focus on the Black regiments of the American Civil War and their importance to U.S. history. Some of the important issues that will be discussed in this paper will include the struggles of black soldiers during the Civil War, from their wage earnings (where most made less money than white soldiers); the clothes they wore (most had no uniforms at all). Also, many of these soldiers had trouble getting the basic necessities like shoes, socks and soap. Other areas I will discuss will be the discriminatio...
The Emancipation Proclamation did little to clarify the status or citizenship of the freed slaves; it opened the possibility of military service for blacks. In 1863, the need for men convinced the administration to recruit northern and southern blacks for the Union army. Lincoln came so see black soldier as “the great available and yet unavailed for force for restoring the Union”. African American people helped that military service would secure equal rights for their people. One the black soldier had fought for the Union, wrote Frederick Douglass, “there is no power on earth which can deny that he has earned the right of citizenship in the United States.” Lincoln exhibited a remarkable ability to alter his attitudes according to circumstance. He became so sincerely admire black soldiers during the Civil War. June 1864, Lincoln called on the party to “put into the platform as the keystone, the amendment of the Constitution abolishing and prohibiting slavery forever.” The party promptly called for the Thirteenth Amendment. The proposed amendment passed in early 1865 and was sent to the states for ratification. Finally, the war to save the Union had also become the war to free
The act that the government passed in July of 1862 was an uprising to starting off the Buffalo Soldiers success. Then Abraham Lincoln Passed The Law To free All African American Slaves on January 1 1863, ,which made most of African American men thinking that joining the army would help them gain freedom and that would be a better life instead of taking time to learn how to read or write. After Abraham Lincoln Passed the law approximately 180,000 was serving in the USA Union Army. The Buffalo Soldiers started with nothing surviving off spoiled food, half working low class weapons, and also not having any First-Aid kit to fix up anybody that was hurting and injury/damage. Even doe The Buffalo Soldiers were serving the country, doing good, helping out the USA with wars they were still poorly. Mans would go 48Hours without eating because people still had racial thoughts about the African Americans when traveling thru different city getting ready for ...
By the Spring of 1863, African Americans were fighting in many wars. They were a very big help to the Union. About 10 percent of the Union's navy was African Americans.
African Americans were ready to join the Union Army to fight against slavery in hopes that military service would demonstrate their equality. Several states, to include Louisiana, would form volunteer regiments as a result of the Militia Act of 1862 passed by Congress in July. The 1st Louisiana Native Guard was the first regiment of African Americans in the Union Army.3 This regiment of United States Colored Troops (USCT) was officially formed in September of 1862 and by October of 1862 was assigned duties. Two more regiments would be formed in Kansas and South Carolina.
They joined because it provided a better income, which was an alternative way of making money compared to the poorly paid domestic labor that most blacks had endured. The civil war resulted in the 13th Amendment of the Constitution which abolished slavery altogether. Although black soldiers fought in the war which eventually ended slavery, they still did not have civil rights. The whites did not want to share political power with African Americans. This brought about the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution.
The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, or simply the Civil War in the United States, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865, after seven Southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America . The states that remained in the Union were known as the "Union" or the "North". The war had its origin in the fractious issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. Foreign powers did not intervene. After four years of bloody combat that left over 600,000 soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and the difficult Reconstruction process of restoring national unity and guaranteeing rights to the freed slaves began.
Add in the fact that the neighboring countries are starting to threaten war on us because of slave dealers invading and kidnaping their people; along with the ever present threat of our own civil war; it makes me wonder if it is worth trying to keep this country going, and not just pardon it off to other countries. highly doubt that any one will want to take us though; with the amount of work and money they would need to put into us so that we would be fully incorporated into their own country.
