To Censor or Not To Censor? That is the Question The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: a great lesson in American History or a novel that is too controversial for young readers? Throughout history there have been times when certain groups, organizations, and people have challenged books due to material presented in these books that conflict with their beliefs or values. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, was first published in 1885, since that time it has been one of the most challenged and banned books in America (CENSORSHIP). At the heart of this challenge is whether to allow books such as Huckleberry Finn part of schools and their curriculum. The debate on whether to allow Huckleberry Finn into school curriculum comes from the strong language and social issues present in this book (Powell). While there are some who argue that censorship of Huckleberry Finn in schools is necessary to protect students, others argue that Huckleberry Finn marks an important part of American History and issues that were present at that time. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn follows a rebellious orphan named Huck Finn through adventures that find him fighting against the society that wants to civilize him and the moral obligations imposed by society. Specifically, Huck runs away from society and in doing so embarks on an adventure that leads him to Jim, a slave. Society mandates that Huck turn Jim in but as a friendship is formed Huck struggles with society’s demands and protecting his friend. This novel realistically explores many different emotions that were prevalent in this era and the struggles that citizens were faced with. Secondly, the teacher needs to have a deep understanding of the content they are presenting so that it can be presented in the best possible way that will promote positive discussions. Last, the school should stand behind any teacher that is willing to take on such controversial topics and help that teacher build a positive base for such literary exploration. We cannot change history instead we must embrace it and learn from it. Removing controversial novels from the curriculum that depict realism limits that student and their ability to learn from the past. The discussions that the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn promote will create valuable life lessons that almost any student can relate to and will likely leave an impression that will last a lifetime.
The Adventure’s of Huckleberry Finn’s unique ability to incorporate moral lessons through satire and simmilar literary techniques prove it to be vital for High school students, especially at Rye, to read. The vast nature of things it teaches is something very rare for one book to do. It not only provides the reader with important life themes like other great novels do but it also shocks the reader to show the power of racism which makes it one of the greatest pieces of literature of all time. High Schools in the United States should not ban The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This book is one of the most important components of American literature in our libraries today, it throws the reader into a time when slavery was lawful and accepted, and gives the reader a new perspective on slavery in general. Until civil rights groups can come up with a better argument than the word “nigger” creating a “hostile work environment”(Zwick) it should not be taken off the required reading list of any High School in the country.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain is about the great adventures that Huck finn has with his slave Jim on the Missouri River. The story tells not only about the adventures Huck has, but more of a deeper understanding of the society he lives in. Twain had Huck born into a low class society of white people; his father was a drunken bum and his mother was dead. He was adopted by the widow Douglas who tried to teach him morals, ethics, and manners that she thought fit in a civilized society. Huck never cared for these values and ran away to be free of them. During Huck’s adventure with Jim he unknowingly realized that he didn't agree with society’s values and could have his own assumptions and moral values. Twain uses this realization to show how the civilized and morally correct social values that was introduced to Huck was now the civilized and morally contradicting values.

Although it has been perceived to many controversial, there are many valid arguments as to why it is the quintessential American novel. The themes Huck Finn portrays obvious themes that play a key role in America; especially in the time it was published such as racism, slavery, and a child running away from home to help out someone who was seen as below him. Along with the controversial elements in the paper, the novel’s characters also had individual voices that made them all stand out in a way that made it more interesting to read. The most common argument for its removal from the literary canon is that the novel is too racist; it offends black readers, perpetuates cheap slave-era stereotypes, and deserves no place on today’s bookshelves. However one must ask if Twain is encouraging traditional southern racism or is Twain disputing these idea.
